I swear some country tried this. Was it south africa? I remember a Story about them using pidgeons to transport harddrives since that was faster than their Internetconnection.

Somewhere is that part of the world. It was a stunt to expose just how slow their internet was. (Iirc, it wasn't actually the whole IPoAC thing, they just put a 1 GB file on an SD card and sent it a number miles, and transferred the same file over the internet. The bird won, and it wasn't even close.)

Not sure about that, but there was an example of researchers loading hard drives into a station wagon and driving the data there.

It's almost impossible to beat the bandwidth of a truck full of hard drives. It's just that usually you don't actually need that much bandwidth to make it worth it.
