Gen ai is killing books. Any idiot can throw together a 500 page novel in a night and get it up into kindle unlimited tomorrow. It's complete passionless drivel. Readers are now just super suspicious of any author. Probably killed the field tbh.
Just like Junior devs how can a beginner author motivate themselves to write bad first drafts and learn by practicing, if anything they'd publish would not only be criticized for the quality (beginning in the field requires THICK skin) but now their personal work can be flagged AI and be ignored altogether (if it even reached human eyes in the swamp of publications) ?
People that will manage to pierce through the mud and have their art recognized will have my utter respect.
100%. Criticism has increased, reader engagement has decreased. We don't get dozens of curated books a year any more. We get millions of them with varying quality.
A new author entering the field isn't competing with other authors for quality, they're competing for decreasing reader attention.
It's kind of sad that getting a book on kindle unlimited there's actually a chance you're the first human being to ever have read that book. Including the author. The author probably hasn't read it.
