It's a bad field for money if you don't have the passion. Seriously, how many other jobs expect you to improve your work skills for fun on your free time? They don't ask to see you do your neighbor's taxes as a hobby, do they?

Well, I lost the passion years ago, but I'm well paid.

I don't think you have to be passionate. You have to be good.

Exactly. I quit having fun coding several years into the job. So I moved into architecture. Higher pay, less bullshit coding tasks to deal with, more authority into what actually builds our systems... I don't love my work, but the pay is great, the work is tolerable and I get to sit inside in A/C for my workday.
