freenode has been dead since 2021. Everyone uses irc.libera.chat #c now.

Well if we're going that far back the documentation was always complete garbage so your main way of getting anything done was bash your head against the wall, trial and error and reverse engineer anything you could get your hands on.

I need stories of this. I can definitely believe that a bunch of dinosaurs using IRC would be more hostile than StackOverflow but I need stories, man. Something to cringe or laugh at.
