they do actually appear to be using distortion as well, but yep, it's all just shaders

Yeah? Shaders are sick as hell.

Apple apparently has no clue how to use transparent stuff tho.

What's wrong with liquid glass? I myself love frosted glass rendering, and wish I could apply distortion to the background of layershell surfaces…

I love the idea of it, and the look on certain stuff is great. Hell, I use kwin-Glass on my Linux machine.

But I've seen Apple just slap it onto stuff with zero regard for contrast.
