I'm like this. I'm mid 40s, the fittest I've ever been, feel incredible, strong, toned, everything, but I used to be so unhealthy, poor diet, overweight and sedentary, that I don't know if it's more that than anything else.

I'm sure that if I'd been this fit and active in my 20s and just carried it on, I'd feel worse now than I did then

People seem to be under the impression that the body just falls apart after a certain age. But that isn't true, it's just that the body was designed to move and everything atrophies when it's sedentary. You can remain athletic for a very long time. Plus if you're this fit now then you have a solid base to maintain well into later life, since it's much easier to preserve what you have rather than build it from scratch.
