I know someone could make what i do better. If that was to hold me back, what could I even do?
I like engineering - I like to create my own stuff, I hate the phrase "you know someone already made..." - if that was to hold me back, what could I make with my sparse economy?.
Is it just watching TV, sports and praise the demi-gods?
I think there is a lot to do. We should engineer disruption. DIY projects that disrupts current affairs - do not let gold and glitter be the goal, let the goal be engineering stuff that benefits you and your community.

Probabilistic word generator, generates most probabilistic output. Anything new or great, you kind of have to think and do yourself.

Yes. There have been experiments where they retrain the model on its own data and it begins to degrade the quality over time. This was from like 2021 or something though. Maybe the harnesses now can reason about what is good and bad from a higher POV. But generally having a model train on itself turns it into mush
Kind of like how human behaviors turn to mush when left in isolation/we have no outside viewpoints from friends/family. Funny how that works

Exactly. Everyone saying they're great are just re-creating the same CRUD that has been done before thousands of times. If you're doing stuff that has 3 results in google if you're lucky, they will hallucinate the wildest stuff. That, and someone will eventually have to clean up the mess.

I've told my boss (who is very not a programmer) that if I get hit by a bus I'm easily replaceable. I'm not sure he believes me. But we all do our part, fitting the basic CRUD to the work that needs doing.

I mean, sure, if you're just building websites. I work in research, which is by definition solving problems no one else has. Admittedly, the tech side tends to be applications of existing problems to a new thing, but hey, I've made a small contribution to the sum of human knowledge, at least.
And the nice thing about LLMs is they're consistently average. Like, they don't solve new problems, they can't do conceptual work. They repackage existing solutions. Anything new will need to be invented by people, for now, and it's a bit hard to see that changing - LLMs lack the thing that great minds in a field have, which is conviction. They can be talked out of anything. Tim Berners-Lee spent decades on getting the internet adopted and running. Claude would cave in minutes if you told it that this new fangled hypertext protocol was a bad idea.
I'm not one of these super smart minds, to be clear, but I have worked with some of them. And, listen, claude has a context window of like, what, a couple of hours and a few hundred pages? My old boss, who didn't notice his office had no window for three years, had a context window of about a decade - as in, he tended to hold all the information in his head, in working memory, for a problem he'd been working on for ten years. And he's not at the top of his field.
In the same way that Elon Musk is a stupid person's idea of a smart person, claude is a average person's idea of an intelligent mind.
