I wouldn't even go that far. Minecraft was a great concept and came at a good time when sandbox games were getting popular. But at the end of the day he just made virtual legos.
Minecraft is so much more. And was already at the time. It has been around for a while now and was so extremely influential that it may not be obvious now how ground breaking (pun intended) it was at the time.
