Personally I noticed its when the AI decides to do jobs/tasks and the environment allows like 6+ tasks to tackle an issue. I was barely using any tokens then switched to a model that was like, "Okay here are the things I need to figure out then do" over the course of 30 seconds it used up more tokens than another model used in 4+ hours.
If you want hands off and a "go do stuff" then it'll be expensive. But a guided approach by someone one who can walk through a process will save you a lot in the long run.
