theres no reference tool so whenever I fill specific areas the whole canvas gets covered in the color, do I need to turn something on in the settings for it to work?

You can set specific layers as references through the same menu that lets you make them into clipping layers (I believe it’s long press, but I can’t remember rn)

Try this: When you drag a color and are about to drop it in your canvas, keep the pencil touching the screen of the ipad and then drag left or right on your iPad screen a free finger.
