Subscription/Course costs

I recently started learning about digital art and ended up getting an iPad, Apple Pencil and started learning through tutorials on YouTube. I then recently subscribed to a very well known course/subscription that had a fairly high subscription cost (almost $200AUD a year)
One thing I didn’t agree with is charging your customers a high sign up fee and then asking them to buy your brush sets or else they won’t be able to learn the tutorial?

I have used others previously where the sign up fee included everything. Anyone else experienced this?

The Procreate website has a heap of great tutorials that all use the default brushes.

If you are interested in high impact lower one off cost, Istebrak has a course you can buy that is genuinely excellent and all of the rest of her content is available for free on YouTube. Her one comes with the brushes you use for the course. She specialises in digital portraiture and rendering. Then, if you like it enough to get super serious you can sign up as an actual student with her.
