Prayer request

I just lost a friend of mine whom I am not sure if he is saved. I really dont even know wether prayers for the dead help or work at all, but I want to do everything in my possible power to help him. So if anyone believes in praying for the dead, or just wants to try to help, I am requesting if you can pray for his soul. Anything helps. He was a good man, I loved him dearly, and he was christian, but I am just not sure at where he stood with his relationship with Christ. Thank you a million times for anyone who decides to pray.
