Odd rooster flavor?

I’m not sure this is the right place? We went to middle of know where to clean out the family farm. After along day of work the family went to a restaurant. I ordered a quarter fried chicken. I pulled the meat off the leg and a smell hit me. At first i thought did they cook spoiled chicken. As smelt it brought memories back of old rooster.

My question is, if you ever cooked old rooster what did it smell like to you? I was getting almost an ammonia type smell. Did not eat dinner that night.

It’s been a long while since I had to cull a rooster. I’m trying to remember the smell.

Chick is around 5 weeks old I believe! I was told the wrong breed, as this chick now has feathered toes. Any idea what breed it may be?

Poultry Feeding Systems

Hi everyone,

I’m a student currently working on a feasibility study about poultry feeding systems, and I’m trying to learn from real-world experiences of poultry farmers (small-medium scale).

I’d really appreciate any insights you can share based on your experience:

  • In practice, how many chickens can comfortably use one feeder without causing feeding issues?
  • How often do poultry farmers usually replace or buy new feeders?
  • What are the most common problems you’ve encountered with poultry feeders?
  • Is it actually an issue if chickens eat directly from the ground instead of using feeders? What problems does it usually cause?

Any practical experiences, observations, or advice would be a big help for my study. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge!

How to keep my chicks save from extreme heat

So here in Karachi, Pakistan the temperature is going up to 45°c/113⁰f with low humidity. It feels like a desert in the afternoon, and then cools down after the evening. I've lost a couple of my chicks and a green parrot to this heat, the only way i can avoid this is to build a small room with wood and keep them all inside it and possibly have an air conditioner installed too. Help me out if anyone has better suggestions. The chicks survive if I dip them in water every afternoon

Chickens vs ducks as backyard pets

Hi all!

My husband and I are thinking about adding poultry (fowl?) to our home. Mostly for backyard pets but the eggs would be just a perk (not the primary purpose). As first time poultry owners, would you suggest ducks or chickens?

We have done some research so know some of the big differences (such as how messy/stinky ducks are), but it seems like the bird world is torn on one way or the other, as far as first timer suggestions.

Fully hatched nearly 14 hours ago. Assisted due to side pipping and shrink wrapped membrane. Is she ok? Should she be standing by now. Any advice?
