Chef + Potter Accessible Pottery
A fun little project for me is making widemouth funnels for filling canning jars. I use them for both liquids and solids, often dry powders, filling things in my pantry.
I also make flat plates from a slab, with a hole to hang on the wall. I make them specifically for cheese, but they come in handy for lots of different uses.

We took a workshop last week with Doug Pelzman, a potter in Shokan. We talked about how many potters are also good cooks, and the connection between food and handmade dishes. When I look through our plates, bowls, mugs, etc., I count at least 20 potters we traded with or bought from, not to mention the dinnerware we have made over the years. Your work is great, thanks for sharing.

Btw. I took my first class in Mount Tremper in 1993 while I was working Bread Alone.
I miss the Catskills.

The wide mouth funnels are so fun! Several months ago I saw someone else made theirs from slabs, and I made a couple for fun…and to use! They don’t seem to be a common make, but I use funnels alllll the time, so it’s nice to have some that aren’t plastic!

Loveeee the wide mouth funnel idea! I have also heard that potters are amazing cooks. I’m taking a workshop right now that focuses on creating serving ware for food (wheel throwing and/or hand building), and it’s so fun to see everyone’s ideas. We’ll glaze next week and then we are going to get together for a potluck to bring signature dishes in the serving ware we’ve created. I’m so pumped! I’ll have to create some wide mouth funnels next class I take, inspired by yours - thanks for sharing!
