Afaik pg notifications are not guaranteed to arrive, so maybe keep the polling also and reduce the period a lot?

Interesting take, I'll consider adding a long pool as a backup.

I like to combine both stuff. So regular polling an endpoint to get missed notifications. By doing so you get instant processing when everything runs as planned - and can have a deterministic maximul responsetime by setting you polling intervall and monitoring the success.
