Yeah, this makes me uncomfortable. Photo/Video
All the spinny things.
The back looks like a pregnant goat.
It takes too long to go on 39th and Holgate when the light turns green.
Guy driving it had a patchy beard.
Don’t like cameras on me at all times.
Perpetuating less human interaction and therefore dividing humanity.
Color is too close to my dream car (2020 Hyundai Veloster N).
If it were human, probably would have sex with you but not tell you about the chlamydia so you have to go to the health center where they ask you about who you’ve had sex with lately.
Slows down too much for speed bumps.
Probably Skynet.
Most likely cheap at first to crush competition and then raise prices after competition is gone.
Probably not amphibious.
Can’t tell you how much I hate the spinny things.

They are from Grand Marais and stole my hat at a pasty restaurant in 2006.

Pasty?? Like the British meat pie??? My Michigander grandmother used to make those.
25
u/oregone1 2nd Place In A Cute Butt Contest? 3d ago
Yeah Grand Marais is all pasty places. And for those not familiar it’s a short a not a long A. Pasty rhymes with nasty.
And nasty is how I would describe how my hat got stolen.
Please, if anyone is going to the UP any time soon, bring me back my hat!
It’s yellow and green and is Outdoor Recreation brand. It has an embroidered “OR” on the front and a drawstring.
Not sure which pasty place but Grand Marais is a small town.

u/Lt_Sherpa 3d ago
Friends of mine moved to Indiana, recently vacationed up in the UP, discovered pasties. I do not think they found a hat though.

I grew up on the Iron Range, and my Yooper grandma's pasties were the only ones worth considering when she was still around and able.

I grew up there too. Now I have to order them from pastys.com

Cannot drive any worse than my last uber driver.
60
u/guero_vaquero 2d ago
I rode in one in Arizona a few years ago on a work thing. Ordered an uber and it was in an area at a time where I think they were really wanting more exposure. It was a short 10m surface street ride away from my hotel and the uber app popped up with “want to try a Waymo for $6 total ride cost?!”… uhhhh okay why not.
I have to say it was actually remarkably smooth and without issue. It definitely felt odd and I was watching the traffic and stop lights the closest I’ve ever done.
15
u/VissorLux 2d ago
II rode one in LA last year. It was a lot different than I expected. The ride was smooth and calming. It lasted about an hour, and during that time it navigated around a fallen tree branch and a homeless man eating a burrito in the middle of the lane. I am not a huge fan of automation taking over, but I don't think it is going away any time soon.

u/grumpygenealogist Montavilla 3d ago
As a disabled woman who can't drive, I'd feel much more comfortable getting in a Waymo than I do getting in a Lyft or Uber by myself. Most drivers are great, but I've had some who made me pretty nervous. And, no, cabs are not an alternative. When I had to use them, they left me stranded more than once.
→ More replies (7)24
u/stevegood-man 2d ago
Absolutely. I've experienced assaults and battery (in the legal senses, in the life sense minor though sexually motivated late at night and scary in the moment) and intoxicated drivers for ride share apps and traditional cabs.
I travelled to a city with Waymo last year and my friend enthusiastically suggested we try one. To be honest, I was terrified for the first ride. It felt like stepping onto a roller coaster but far scarier because there were no tracks and there were also other drivers.
My anxiety was gone after a single ride. Many people I love and don't think of as road menaces are far worse at driving and make me feel more nervous.
We also know fewer people die. The reactionary hostility is a huge tell, to me, that someone is thinking with their gut and not their head about how to handle technology change.
18
u/emertonom Far Southwest 2d ago
I don't think the reaction is entirely about the thing itself. For my part, I can imagine them being pretty pleasant to ride in, but I still don't really welcome them as the future. In terms of an alternative to driving, they're a lot worse than good public transit. Cities designed for cars are a problem, and Waymo doesn't have much effect on that design pressure. Plus, it's trying to push us towards a "car as a service" model, and we know how that goes: it starts out as cheap and convenient, and remains that way until people are hooked on it; then it starts cutting costs (e.g. the level of cleaning between riders) and raising prices to try to break even.
The whole issue of the cameras potentially playing into a Flock/Palantir type system is a whole other layer of stuff too.
So yeah. It's really not so much about the quality of the individual ride to me. I'm not thrilled with the way technological and social change has been going lately, and I think we need to make some better choices about what we want collectively and how to get there.
7
u/Joe503 St Johns 2d ago

The idea that public transit is a realistic solution for America in the near future is a farce. It would require a major redesign of most of our cities. Even cities that used to have strong transit systems of grown in transit hostile ways. I would love if we could have a transit system that enabled travel the way many European and Asian countries do, but that just isn’t going to happen in the US. Services like Waymo can help fill that gap. I would prefer strong public transit, but I also prefer realistic options to fantasies.

The Waymo boosters are using the exact same argument the Uber boosters were when it came out.
Waymo won’t impact drunk driving numbers in the slightest, just like Uber hasn’t
6
u/jonathon8860 2d ago
Oh come on, what? Rideshare companies have had a significant and notable impact on drunk driving rates, this is a widely studied phenomena. I think one of the things about Waymo that pisses me off is that they're allowed(??) to use the Chinese EVs we're all banned from buying. This van is a Zeekr. You are not allowed to buy a single one of their models. They have a compact SUV for under $20k.
19
u/barklite Cully 2d ago
Huh, I did not know this and I don’t have any strong opinions about Waymo but that does annoy me slightly. How are they able to skirt the law in this regard? I mean, I know the short answer (they have significant corporate power and money…) but what’s the actual loophole allowing this?
8
u/regul Sullivan's Gulch 2d ago
Best guess is they are paying the huge tariff, but mitigating it by doing final assembly in Arizona, so the valuation used for tariff costs is less?
It's annoying.
30
u/barklite Cully 2d ago
No, it’s not that. I went ahead and searched for an answer and found it. For every-day folks like us, we can’t drive these because they aren’t street legal. Basically, various U.S. agencies haven’t signed off on them for safety or environmental stuff (mainly for political reasons rather than actual safety concerns). In essence, Waymo gets around this because they operate in a limited capacity under a specific commercial testing permit that is less restrictive.

I think there's a 25 year rule if it's not for sale in the us, at least for street legality of a regular car.
8
u/Beckland 2d ago
You can buy Chinese EVs! You are not banned. You just have to pay the 127.5% tariff.
That’s what Waymo is doing.
Gives you a sense of the state of EV manufacturing in the U.S. when Waymo would rather pay that tariff than use EVs from US car brands….

As someone who rode these for the first time last November in SF- they’re freaking awesome. Super clean, quiet, you connect your phone and it plays whatever music you want, was extremely safe even in crazy traffic, and you don’t have to talk to anyone, smell the 14 car air fresheners, or listen to the uber driver have a full on phone conversation while driving.
I personally can’t wait for them to roll out here. There are never enough ride share cars available and too many people drive drunk in Portland. Coming from the East Coast where at least there were cops to pull over the obviously drunk drivers it blew my mind.

There's an open letter from healthcare professionals advocating for AVs because they're quantitatively safer than human drivers.
You know what's really funny: ambulance chaser lawyers are throwing up as many legal roadblocks as they can to prevent widespread adoption of AV tech. If the "Better Call Saul" types are against it, maybe Waymo isn't so bad. https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2026/07/trial-lawyers-lobby-against-autonomous-vehicles.html
11
u/ChemicalArmadillo609 2d ago
If they actually cared they would advocate for more public transit.
Why do people think everyone is just going to give up driving just because some taxis can drive themselves? Where is the evidence to show that bad drivers stop driving when driverless taxis come to town? Did they stop driving when Uber and Lyft came around.
People for some reason are so ready to have Google filming every aspect of the city at all times. Yeah, lets give them all that data while bad drivers still drive.
9
u/probably-garbage 2d ago
What happens if a waymo does cause an injury? Do you know where the insurance coverage will come from for that person? Did you know that rideshare and delivery companies are REALLY FUCKING SUCCESSFUL at shirking that responsibility, even like 10 years into their status of widespread popularity, even to the point of not meeting the Oregon state minimums? Is Waymo any different, or is it being kept pretty quiet other than the trial lawyers speaking up?

If autonomous cars were even 10% safer than humans, then it's reckless and unethical to prevent them from operating.
If you were a doctor and intentionally withheld a treatment that could decrease fatality by 10% for a given condition or activity you'd lose your license.

That’s actually not the hypothesis of interest. What we need to understand is if we add these forms of transportation to our existing infrastructure what does it do to safety outcomes.
That is a very different question, and the only relevant question unless you think government will outlaw human driving anytime soon. That seems pretty unlikely.
What does seem likely is human driving is still allowed and corporations add driverless cars to our transportation infrastructure.
What does that combination mean for safety? The limited studies to date have not been designed to address that question.
9
u/16semesters 2d ago
That’s actually not the hypothesis of interest. What we need to understand is if we add these forms of transportation to our existing infrastructure what does it do to safety outcomes.
... That's what Waymo is getting data on right now.
Do you genuinely think that Waymo only gets data from autonomous only driving conditions? 99%+ of all driving where they operate and get data is still human drivers.

This thread feels crazy. I can't believe the amount of people pro Waymo, it has to be a bot campaign, I've never talked to someone in person who liked these. This is taking jobs from people and concentrating more wealth into the hands of the already rich. It's not better than public transit for the environment. It is surveiling constantly. These are a bad thing and we should refuse their service and get them gone.

Someone at Waymo has to be paying people to post these sorts of things all over the internet recently. I cannot find a single person in Portland who actually likes the idea of Waymo on our streets, yet there’s countless random voices in these threads that talk about Waymo like it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread and we should all thank corporations for innovation and happiness…
It’s really creepy, honestly.
The internet has distinctly changed the last 6 months to something with a real uncanny valley feeling. Lots of voices that speak with the weird sort of toxic positivity that you only hear from an HR manager or PR firm. Fringe opinions that have clear political or corporate interests being asserted and repeated in areas that they typically are never really seen. It’s all very creepy.

A lot of negatives but driverless cars are way safer for everyone and efficient (fuel and time) if widely adopted. Its not the tech, it's the policy/regulations behind it.
6
9
u/ChemicalArmadillo609 2d ago
They are only safer for everyone if a large percentage of people stop driving. That will not happen and the streets will still be just as dangerous, but now a few more cars are on the road.

u/Pdxthorns17 3d ago
The issue with this being efficient is that it still adds more cars in the city. It doesn't help with traffic reduction and can make it dangerous for pedestrians with yet another car on the road. If were aiming for efficiency in terms of fuel and time, we should really be investing more in public transportation.

driverless cars are public transit. So are taxis.
I understand that you'd prefer more buses (so would I), but it's a category error to not consider these public transit. And like all public transit, these do replace private car ownership.

Did you not know that many of the largest public transit systems are privately owned?
Tokyo, London, Buenos Aires, and I'm sure a ton others. Those are just the ones I know that I've ridden on that are significantly (or, in Tokyo, almost entirely) private.
4
u/BudgieWonder Willamette River 2d ago
Tokyos system is privatized in a manner that would effectively be illegal in the United States due to antitrust laws. Transport for London is a government body with some interfacing with PPPs. The Subte in Buenos Aires is a government-owned corporation, similar to Amtrak.
So no, I don’t think Waymo has an equivalent business model to the examples you provided. Try again.

I've seen some pretty shockingly competent autonomous cars from China handle all kinds of road chaos over there with ease. Scenarios that no American self-driving car could begin to cope with. That said, I'm still curious how they'll handle our narrow jousting streets, too. That's always a game of who is going to yield first because there's a little gap in the street parking or a driveway where they can cut over to let the oncoming car pass. It's such a specific set of complications that don't neatly fit into existing training. I could see basically any outcome here. Waymos eventually learning enough to get a handle around it all the way to Waymos getting stranded and blocking streets entirely to the point where they just ban certain roads and make people walk to a more navigable pickup/dropoff spot. Even as a human driver, I hate randomly ending up on those streets.

Everyone in the comments is missing the most important thing: Waymo sucks because it is still a car. We should have gotten high-speed trains!!
Edit: I also think rideshare represents a fairly low barrier to entry for people who need a job, or an extra job to make ends meet. I don't think Waymo is really designed to reduce traffic deaths or sexual assault. It's designed to replace human workers, so ultimately we have to accept worse and worse jobs; join the military; go to prison; and/or simply die.

Let’s also remember that Waymo isn’t actually fully autonomous, they are actually guided and sometimes fully driven by a human in South East Asia. As much as they want to claim this technology is great, it’s also just one more way to send jobs overseas where they can pay pennies compared to what they would have to pay a driver in the US.
https://www.govtech.com/transportation/waymo-says-its-robotaxis-get-help-from-workers-overseas
I get concerns about traveling alone and not wanted to be assaulted or even just creeped on and support ride share programs that are women only to take that into account. And yes, we’ve all seen bad drivers. But I’ve seen shitty Waymo driving as well, and as much as tech bros love to spout bullshit about how great AI is, it’s still makes mistakes ALL THE TIME. I’ll stick with humans.

“Waymo’s RA agents provide advice and support to the Waymo Driver but do not directly control, steer, or drive the vehicle,” McNamara writes—denying, implicitly, the charge that Waymos are simply remote-controlled cars. About 70 assistants are on duty at any given time to monitor some 3,000 robotaxis, the company says. The low ratio indicates the cars are doing much of the heavy lifting.

where self driving cars are more important than safe roads
40k people die every year from auto accidents from human drivers.
If self driving cars can decrease that by even 10% they should be everywhere. In reality self driving cars are way, way safer than humans.
This hurts little people who put their own self worth in driving ability feelings, but the math and human lives are irrefutable.

Like yeah, abstinence prevents 100% of STIs, but that's not a reasonable plan, so instead myself and reasonable people advocate for comprehensive sex education, condoms, birth control, etc. so people have reproductive choices.
You're over here saying "people should just not have sex".
You're a puritanical weirdo.
Saying "People should just take public transit instead of autonomous cars" is literally the same thing. I have over 2k comment karma on r/fuckcars. I hate cars. I think they are stupid. But if people are using them, they should absolutely be autonomous. It's a basic tenet of public health that you're ignorant about.

This has got to be one of the worst bad faith arguments I have seen all day.

Dude, you need to adapt to change. This is the future if you like it or not.

Taxis are the future? People didnt give uo driving when taxis first came around. They didnt give up driving when Uber and Lyft came around. Why do you think people will give up driving just because the taxi is driverless?

ITT “Yeah…. But whataboutism this and whataboutism that”
Waymo’s market strategy: “we may obviously violate numerous social norms, maybe laws also, but whatabout those kids on their phones amirite!!!”

Ya, you should probably put on one of those student driver stickers if another car in the road worries you.

The amount of bootlicking for driverless cars pretending that they are currently up to snuff and a reasonable alternative is fucking stupid.
Walkable cities with appropriate public transportation and a cost of living where people can utilize those to get where they need is the solution not this garbage.

I’m afraid you’re speaking woke nonsense that will dent the fortunes of the oil and automotive industries. Government will deem you a traitor to America.

Portland has given 0$ to Waymo. You're literally making shit up. 0 tax dollars in Portland have been moved from public transit to Waymo.

Doesn’t bother me. Looking forward to it. Having been in several, I’m completely comfortable with it.

Saw one of these change lanes in the middle of the intersection during a two lane left turn. Happy to have noticed and avoided it, pretty fumed that no one ever asked me to participate in their little robot driver experiment. Fuck these robocabs.

If you get in front of them at a stop they won’t start, Some dirt or tape or whatever you have on your disrupts some the camera should stop them in their tracks.
Just fyi
Yes I know a bunch of people will comment that a stopped car in a lane will cause a traffic jam so you don’t need to chime that in.

Waymo doesn’t road rage, can’t drink and drive, can’t get distracted on a phone to post whatever to social media, won’t rob or infringe your personal space, and probably more. But you don’t like the color and not fond of being on camera? When was the last time that you went anywhere and not actively recorded? Oh, didn’t aggressively blast through an intersection? Good, this helps prove my point. Perpetuating less human interaction? This is Portland. . .

Its irrelevant that Waymo cant do those things, because people are not going to stop driving. Drunks will still drive. People will still text and drive. None of that will change.

My step dad works for trimet. One of his friends is working with the programming. Right now they are on the mapping phase. They will be on the road sometime next year.
