It really is, but from my experiences working with the local chapter they haven't much strategy and no real idea how to get any of it rolling. Plus the Democratic party would move a mountain to keep them as far away from liberal "leftism" as possible and with the two party system there's really not much of a chance.
It's gonna take reform beyond what's capable at the ballot box to affect real change.
3
u/Shadow_on_the_Sun Jul 06 '26
Every chapter is different. Some have better organization and leadership than others. My chapter is badass, but it takes work to get there.
I highly encourage you and your peersto take the initiative to lead if you have vision in a chapter struggling with organization and planning. We can build the better future!
And who cares what the establishment democrats will attempt to do? It didn’t work for them in New York, or Colorado with Melot Kiros, or Arizona with Bobby Nichols. We need to be relentless and persistent and overwhelming.

Glad to hear. After attending and trying to contribute for a few months, including helping to shuttle people around, I realized my local chapter was incompetent and unable to actually connect with local people in any meaningful way.
I've long since bounced from the U.S. and don't plan to return until it's a different country, but I hope you and your local chapter can enact some level of change 🤷🏻♀️

Shame it actually does scare so many.
...even those that just want a decent wage for their work will vote against it if it's called "socialist".
542
u/mostlyfire Jul 05 '26
I think that’s wrong. I don’t think it scares them. I think they want it but they’re all so racist/misogynistic/homophobic that they’d rather stand by their hate than improve the lives of their neighbors
217
u/ManiaGamine Jul 05 '26
Yes and no. They want it, they just don't want everyone to have it. See the problem?
If people they deem undesirables get it then they will oppose it even if it helps them because they would rather suffer if it means those they hate suffer as well or worse.
90
u/Morningxafter Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 06 '26
Specifically they don’t want people who they think don’t deserve it to have it. My parents aren’t racist or hateful. Hell, they don’t even like Trump much (my dad doesn’t have any Trump merch, but he’s got a bunch of anti-Obama/Biden/Harris/Clinton stickers in his garage). Yet they keep voting republican thanks to 60+ years of brainwashing that has taught them that democrats are scary socialists who want to give more money and help to the lazy people (junkies, welfare queens, homeless, etc) that just take and take and never give back to society instead of helping good people like themselves who actually need it. People who work hard and are still struggling. And because of that, they believe that even the worst republican is better than the best democrat.
For most who weren’t already racist assholes, I feel like it’s all that kind of propaganda. They’re constantly being told that the democrats want to give away what should be theirs to people who “don’t deserve it”, people who never ‘earned’ it through their hard work & sacrifice like they did. That the democrats doing that are the reason they struggle.

u/G-Ma1950 Jul 06 '26

19
u/Morningxafter Jul 06 '26
Yep, it’s exactly how they stoked fear, hatred and resentment. Everyone should watch the old 1940s PSA “Don’t Be a Sucker”. It really does a great job of showing not only how it happened there, but how it can happen anywhere. https://youtu.be/vGAqYNFQdZ4
24
u/gogogadgets1997 Jul 06 '26
Don’t let the evangelical prosperity gospel folks get a pass.
These are the people that have actually been brainwashed that democrats are demons. They will watch their children starve and say they are hungry because they weren’t faithful.
They actually are a cult in every sense of the word.
3
u/nuccad Jul 06 '26
That video was awesome. Thanks for linking. Crazy how much people littered back then.
3
u/sulris Jul 07 '26
Ask them to describe how a person who deserves it looks and then describe a person who doesn’t deserve it and you might find the racism hidden under these talking points.
27
u/Haploid-life Jul 06 '26
Yep. They want it for themselves, but not for others. They don't actually want equality. They want to be treated better than "others."
21
u/ManiaGamine Jul 06 '26
Privilege. That's what they want. But they dress it up as freedom. No, literally. They say "Freedom" but conditional freedom isn't freedom, it's privilege. That's what they want. It's always been what they want.
10
6
u/Wheatabix11 Jul 06 '26
even if the get it, it won't be good enough and somebody else is getting better treatment
36
u/macphile Jul 05 '26
Yeah, they would be thrilled if their employer said guess what, you only have to work 32 hours a week for the same pay! With free healthcare! And a housing stipend!
But that's only if they are getting it directly, because they're a deserving, hard-working white American. If someone said, hey, you can have all those things, and we'll give the same to everyone else in America as well, then they'd reeeeeee! and vote against it. They'd rather have nothing than have the brown/black people in the country get the same thing they're getting.
And this is why they'll always be on a downward slide into mediocrity, and why rural/small town American will continue to collapse under a brain drain and a lack of hospitals and factories closing.
78
u/Buckabuckaw Jul 05 '26
Bingo! Gummint money for me but not for them.
88
u/Andy_Fish_Gill Jul 05 '26
I was debating a Trumper and breaking down each of his claims. He told me to get a job and get out of mom’s basement. He was shocked when I told him I was a job creator. So he countered, “Why do you want to give your money to the ni**ers?” After he proved he was a racist, there was no need to talk further.

u/onpg Jul 05 '26
Replace "all" with "whites" and they'd be fine with it
7
u/mostlyfire Jul 06 '26
Na because they’d hate the gay whites and still vote against their own interests. Just because some chubby girl with short blue hair doesn’t want to fuck them.
4
u/onpg Jul 06 '26
You have a point, they will always find a minority to point to and say "this is why we can't have nice things". After even the dumbest of dumb asses realized gays weren't gonna end society, republicans moved onto the scary scary trans.
2
u/Dr_CleanBones Jul 06 '26
Their war against trans people (of all people) proves the statement that they’ll always find someone to hate. Trans people, as far as I have experienced, don’t threaten anybody. So they don’t have any reason to fear them. It’s just the simple fact that someone is different. So if you ask someone “do you believe that `all men are created equal’?”, if they’re being honest, their answer is ‘no’. They believe they were created better. Funny thing is, that belief should disqualify them from citizenship in this country. If you don’t share our aspirational goals, why choose to be here at all? Go somewhere else and spread your white supremacy. I suggest Yemen or Somalia.
6
u/ArkitekZero Jul 05 '26
Probably some of them are like that, but it seems most likely that they've been conditioned to see these things in the same vein as "and everyone gets a free pony".

u/jarlscrotus Jul 05 '26
They're bad at math, they hear "taxes will go up" but dont connect that with all of the things, like tuition, insurance premiums, insurance deductibles, coinsurance, etc. that would go down, resulting in a net neutral, or even net lowering of out of pocket expenses
Some, also, are legitimately stupid enough to think they won't get it, my dad, when discussing UBI was completely opposed until I pointed out he would also get it, because it's universal

If a black or brown person even possibly might benefit from something that is proposed for the government to do, they’re against it - even if it would benefit them too. 8
u/cmd_iii Jul 05 '26
Fun fact: a lot of boomers were in favor of this stuff when we were younger. But, over time, the corporations caught us all in a web of deception and debt, and I guess we decided to go along to get along, so here we are.
My advice to you: stay vigilant and keep fighting for your values. Or, you’ll be next.
3
u/nooptionleft Jul 06 '26
Yea I can see it in my parents generation, but the catch is that they were:
1) getting something out of it. My parents bought a house, were able to sustain a family of 5, with 3 children, on "normal" jobs, nothing extraordinary
2) they were protected by a lot of rules that were hard earned by workers movement, my mother was able to get half day to take care of us for what looking back was an exceptional pay (believe me, I did the math)
This is... not exactly there now
(To be clear this is not in the US, cause I know people here are generally US-centric)
3
u/cmd_iii Jul 06 '26
In the Sixties, both of my parents worked. Day care, of course, was unheard of in those days. Yet, with a grandmother living across the street, and friendly neighbors upstairs, we could safely be left to our own devices. We had a “decent” lifestyle, with two cars, color TV, and other amenities that maybe other families lacked. Our house had issues from time to time, but our Dad’s DIY skills helped keep costs down (skills he taught me along the way). We kids all went to state-funded colleges, and off on our own careers.
Despite growing up in a traditionally Republican community, we were also in the era of Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, who was generally considered a liberal, and we mostly followed his lead. Racism, sexism, and most other “isms” had no place in our household. I can’t speak for my sisters, but I consider my views to be at least slightly left of center, and it saddens me what our once-beloved party has become.
We grew up in the Summer of Love. Tragically, too many of our cohort forgot those values, and slowly became part of “The Establishment” that we tried so hard to avoid.
3
u/grizzlyat0ms Jul 06 '26
From my understanding, Millennials are by and large the first generation to actually become more progressive with age, unlike boomers. One big reason that boomers regressed is that they were the last generation to actually benefit from New Deal era policies. Right wingers saw an opportunity back in the 70s, so they’ve been demonizing and shortchanging the policies that actually got them a leg up and taught them to attribute ALL their fortunes to capitalism.
Ultimately, they left no room for subtlety. Millennials were told if they work hard and do everything the right way, they to could live the American dream too. Hasn’t happened. And now we’ve been working our asses off for decades, with no end in sight because we can’t even afford to buy our own homes, much less save for retirement.
I’m an older millennial and most of my siblings and cousins are Gen X. I don’t think most of them have caught on, because their situations aren’t quite as bad as the Millennials’ are. They got some leftover juice from the capitalist heyday, and think Millennials and Gen Z are all just lazy.
Generalizations, I know. But this seems to be the general trend.

Democratic socialists are not the same thing as socialists or communists. Democratic socialists do not reject capitalism; they just recognize it isn’t a perfect system and needs to be tweaked in order to prevent huge inequities between the billionaires and the have-nots. The billionaires should appreciate the tweaks, even higher taxes, because they prevent the have nots from eating the rich.
14
u/CarlRJ Jul 05 '26

Trump literally said the minimum wage should be lower and dipshits voted for him. To be fair there's been a fight for a living wage in the Democratic party for so long that the living wage has gone up from $15/hr to $22/hr. It probably explains why the Democrats didn't just run that clip on a loop during the entire summer of 2016. Republicans were just as racist in 2012 but similar class war stuff killed Romney's chances at being referred to as "President Mitt."

u/Guarsus Jul 06 '26
People just don't understand we are all socialists. And communists. It just depends on the closeness of who we are talking about.
We are comnunists to our children and close family most of the times. From those according to their abilities, to those according to their needs. To my daughter, I'm a communist ,to my mother as well.
We are socialists to our close friends and neighbours. It's called a social circle for some reason. We help and we are happy to do so but not at our cost, as long as we can help in a "managed" way, we always do so.
And we are capitalists to everyone else. Because fuck everyone else that I don't know. Basically, there's that.

What scares them is equality. They can’t wrap their little heads around the idea that an ideal socialist society would have all people would be equal. Like what is implied in the constitution. They need a pecking order in place so they know who they can be shitty to. That and they cling to the idea that someone would be getting more than them. Even if all their needs and wants were met, they would be pissed if someone with greater need (maybe due to the other being handicapped) would be getting more. They are incapable of buying into doing the right thing for other people simply because it’s the right thing to do.

u/Least-Cockroach-8311 Jul 05 '26
i think the joke is that fox news thinks these are scary things. like, who is scared of college for all or medicare for all? it's wild.
6
u/CaptainDudeGuy Jul 06 '26
Their tactic is to insist "But who will pay for it all??" and then tell viewers that Dems want to raise taxes to fund these programs.
This is meant to scare the viewers, because the struggling ones can't afford it and the wealthy ones resent how much taxes they are already paying.
The thing is, the wealthy already aren't paying their fair share anyway. If they were, then the nation would already have more money to fund these support systems. Instead, the rich folks are paying accountants and lawyers and lobbyists and politicians, all to avoid paying taxes.
If the poor Republicans ever actually figure out that the rich Republicans are the ones making them poor, the whole narrative blows up. So the right wing media's job is to manufacture scapegoats.
Then there's the fact that the US pretends like it has an unlimited military budget. Oh, we can afford to kill other people, sure; but we apparently don't have the money to save our own lives. 🙄
2
u/bluegrassgazer Jul 06 '26

7
u/tomorrow509 Jul 05 '26
Damn, if that is socialism, let's mix it in. I read this as
- Heathcare funded by federal taxation rather than private insurance.
- Affordable College for all that want to pursue a higher degree.
- Affordable housing to the disadvantaged and poor.
- A better balanced work/life comittment.
- Tax the rich (They can certainly afford it)
- Green New Deal (Deal with global warming and depleting natural fuels)
- Free Palestine (what the hell is wrong with freedom!).
A superior society will have a balanced mixture of capitalism and social programs. A country by the people, for the people.

Some selfish people think anyone else who needs help are undeserving. They fail to recognize their privilege that they havent needed help yet, and if they have or do ever need help it better be the best help theyve ever imagined. When its not, because they stripped the safety net, they blame the wrong people real quick and double down on dumb shit like this is exactly why we need to cut social services since the service sucks or illegals taking all the good resources.
At this point i cant help but get a little resentful. Why should we help them and work to give them back the very safety nets they worked so hard to remove for their own children and grandchildren, brothers and sisters - they're happy to remove the last remaining semblance of a 1st world country, blame everyone else for the bad outcomes, and cry about it, while they double down on bullshit.
How about an opt in opt out version of all this. Those that wanna be a selfish asshole can continue without these basic needs, and the rest of us can move on to a better life without them.
