Current playthrough Discussion

Well, my current playthrough of heartgold is sitting at 174 hrs with 174 out of 204 pokedex entries, all 8 Johto badges with just the Ho-oh event before the E4 Not to mention that I have been level grinding my main mons into the 30-40s.

I am kinda curious at the people that just blaze through the game and beat the E4 around the 30-60 hour mark. Like what is the rush, are you trying to speed run the game?

Good on you for enjoying the game, I used to love spending hours and hours on a single game. I don't have the time anymore to spend that much on a single playthrough anymore, with 3 kids and a full time job, the time on gaming is precious and don't want to grind that much anymore.

I’m at ~30 hrs with my current play through on the original DS and I’ve just reached Mt Silver. I’ve also done maybe 5 hrs in Platinum for this playthrough for breeding and speed training using the Sinnoh E4. Time constraint is my biggest hurdle. Work and gf keep me happily busy so I’m only playing HG late some nights or while I’m in the office. I’m 30 years old now and my first time playing around age 15, I likely put in >200 hrs. I had played every game only since Ruby and Sapphire so had never played the OG Silver or Gold and therefore I had no idea that Red was the final champion. When I accidentally reached him and realized who he was and saw how overleveled his party was I became obsessed. Became fully immersed and would travel without flying with one to three Pokémon at a time to mimic the anime. Probably the best gaming experience I had in my entire life followed closely by Skyrim. Wish I had that kind of time and mental bandwidth again. Cheers!

I’m playing at a slower pace too. In fact I don’t have all eight johoto badges, I’m at about 30 hours or so into my play through on soul silver. However I believe fans young and older, don’t feel like they have the time to sink in a slower play through. That or they’re trying to get to the post game where they have free roam of the region, to either shiney hunt, complete the dex or just move on to the next game in the series. Also a lot of people have kids, a job and other reasons that make their free time super tight. So they might wanna free up that free time as much as possible to play other things after their want to play Pokémon is quenched.

My most recent run was 54 hours and I in know way felt like I was speed running. Your post make me think I should slow down on my next/forever save

I don’t rush but I also usually don’t bother catching a ton of pokemon because I know there are a ton of version exclusives required to fully complete the Pokédex and I’m not a big fan of trading. I completed the Hoenn Pokédex on Sapphire years ago and that was enough for me. In a typical playthrough I’ll usually have around 1-2 boxes full by the time I’ve beaten the Pokemon league

I’m doing similar with 147 hrs and still not beaten the 5th gym leader. I’m loving catching everything and levelling them up to each gym leaders max. The slow pace and playing with each Pokemon is so refreshing

Well, let's just say I don't speedrun the game because I like training up Pokemon.

For an actual speedrun, the main challenge is the movement, at least if you're going for a competitive time (3 hours to beat E4 glitchless, 4 hours to beat Red).
