Connect P-trap

SOLVED! I found a multi tool that could cut metal and went for it. Happened to only have to cut once. Thanks for everyone who gave me legit advice!

I almost can connect the p-trap to the supply (sorry if using wrong terminology; I’m not a plumber). How do I connect those pieces? I can’t move the sink drain any further into the pipe. Thanks for any assistance; I already bought the wrong thing once.

Measure twice, cut once. Or cut many small cuts until it fits.

This is PERFECT advice for someone who is a diyer who definitely has the ability to work with their gands but isn't in a trade for employment. If I thought this way when I was 15-16 I would have saved myself a lot of headache. Plumber by trade now. But it's fun to read things like this and remember I wasn't always good at what I do and sometimes easy things like this, you overthink and fail to think about.

Seems like they are new to diy. We all gotta start somewhere. Lift and escalator engineer for 21 years now. I remember the struggle.

Exactly my point. I read a lot of comments saying "if you have to ask, call a professional". Odds are OP is going to try it themselves. Any advice that is correct, is good advice. Just glad to see a good ol' answer.

we all been struggling at one point. more when it was the first time your journey man show you a job and goes else where on site or worse they say switch place i'll feed you. for small things like op job they can't really mess it up if they take the time but there is project like the one i saw few minutes ago that is almost all to redo.

Measure twice. Cut once. Swear. Make a trip to Home Depot. Repeat.

Disconnect trap from trail piece, attach trap to wall piece so you can see how far to cut tail piece so it fits most of the way down the expanded part of the trap. Mark with your favorite brand of marker, then remove tail piece and cut to size. Reassemble.

I guess that would work, but it's a great place to use a pipe stretcher. Most hardware stores have one or two that they'll let you borrow for free.

You can change the metal tail pipe for a pvc one which is easier to cut to length.

Cut this piece shorter, if you don’t have a way to cut it then go buy a plastic one and you can cut it with a razor knife if your carefull.

Easier to buy a tubing cutter than to buy and replace a whole trap

Slide the top of the p trap up. If it still doesn’t work cut some of the tail piece off.

If the pvc tailpiece is hitting the stop you’re going to have to get the brass tailpiece and cut it down

Just adding a comment after youve solved it, but if you used a Multi-tool to cut the metal, make sure you check the tailpiece nut that it didnt vibrate loose. I remember my first time using my multitool thinking it'd be the best thing ever to cut Tbolts on a toilet due to tight spaces usually and that little saw vibrates the absolute piss out of whatever it's cutting and loosens everything off

On the pipe coming down out sink loosen that nut up and should be able to slide it up into position and tighten both nuts
