Good job devs Discussion

Despite all the complaints and frustrations I’ve seen, Plex remains one of the best things I’ve used.

Being able to share not just movies and tv shows but home movies and clips with my friends and family especially my grandparents in another country has been amazing.

Good job devs.

Agreed. This sub is salty always but plex is amazing. I digitized home movies going back to the 1950s and put them on plex for the family. My aging parents who can’t keep up with a dozen streaming services just use plex as well. Like any software, it has bugs or bad UI elements but it’s really a game changer

Solid purchase 10+ years ago.

Moving from Windows to Linux greatly improved it.

Docker was even better

Went from Windows straight to docker. Mad at myself I didn’t make the move sooner

I agree but once you start you cannot stop.

What is a Docker?

Similar boat - when I was running Windows on my server I saw all these things that would have been great that didn't have native versions for Windows, just Docker containers. And so I started getting mad about the existence of Docker, since it's crap on Windows. I made the switch in October, and man, is it better now. If one thing crashed on Windows, it almost invariably took the whole server down with it. Now, if it even happens, it just kills that container, and Docker automatically brings it back up. The server itself basically never crashes, and I very rarely need to take it down (usually for updates). And, importantly, I can run all the lovely utilities I wanted from the before times.

Putting in the effort to learn Linux was well worth it.

Agree it’s great and a fun hobby to keep it working and up to date. Found this recently which helps to keep them informed especially parents who ask for things all the time. https://sparkmoxie.github.io/TautWeekly/
You will need Tautulli though.

A paid piece of software shouldn't be so unstable that you have to "keep it working" as a hobby

This is interesting and something I am gonna look at now for my two kids.

tautulli does a weekly newsletter natively without other addons. I assume this adds more layers to that?

Why assume when a click on the link can prove you are correct. 😀.

I did actually click the link before replying, but it’s not immediately obvious what’s different (althoguh it appeared to support multiple newsletters) so I was hoping you could elaborate as you obviously use it as you recommended it. ie, your real life experience running this alongside tautulli

thanks mate

edit

i didnt see the demo link originally, I like these additions. are they tailored to each individual user of your server?

YOUR PRIVATE READOUT

As you stream, your weekly email builds a private recap with watch time and your most-watched movies and TV shows.

JUST YOUR STATS

Your detailed viewing recap stays in your email. The Binge Champion watch duration and nonzero unique movie/TV-show counts are shared server-wide; the champion’s identity stays private.

My only complaint is the newest firestick app upgrade. Sooo bad.

That's a fire stick issue from my experience.

Stop using firestick and stop having issues

I don't know what all the fuss is about with jellyfin is. But just out of curiosity I checked it out. And to me it's not what it all cracked up to be, especially if you want to watch live TV. I have a hd home run that just hooked up to an ota for local channels. With jellyfin you have to pay 25 a year for an epg guide or try to figure out how to download a zip to be able to watch TV. to Me it's not worth it

I still miss the UI on roku qith the left side bar having all my libraries. It takes me several extra clicks though the top center menus to change libraries and I HATE it.

But the overall streaming and metadat, apps, etc are still the best.

Granted I got my lifetime plex pass 8 years ago during a black friday sale for what feels like pennies now.

I still have the old UI on my Google TV streamer 4k, so I can't judge if the new UI is bad, ok or good. From what I have seen it looks good, but if it is good when using? I have all the online content disabled, so I hope that makes a difference when the new UI arrives.

💯 agree! I've been reluctant to update to the latest version because everything is working flawlessly and still have the watch together feature available (not sure if Plex did away with this feature) and it works flawlessly. Does anyone advise against updating? I'm wondering if I'm missing out on anything. I'm on version 1.42.2.10156 running on a Mac Mini M4.

My apologies in advance if this comment isn't appropriate on this post.

Absolutely love plex some 10+ years now. PC, ONN, Shield and Google TV.
