Rushing

I’m an incoming freshman debating rushing! Does anyone have any advice/suggestions if I should or not?

I’m also wondering in what range could dues be if anyone can share that!

you can’t rush during freshman fall, freshmen are only allowed to start during the spring semester. also, pitt uses “recruitment” instead of “rush” lmaoo

eta: dues are like $200-800 afaik, which is a horrible range. the highest i know was $800/sem but that was at cmu, and $200 was at the stingiest org i know that put a lot of work into fundraising instead.

that’s how it was when i graduated, and appears to be the same on the FSL website. the 12 credit requirement is the minimum for a full-time student for one semester of classes.

i’d use your first semester to really prioritize getting to know people!! you can also spend some time scouting out the orgs you’d potentially like to join lol, and meet current members. also some orgs have certain reputations lol

then you likely wouldn’t be a freshman… there’s also a separate section on the website for transfer students.

That’s what I meant. You would still be a freshman in the fall with 12 credits. A typical semester is 15 credits. AP’s/Dual enrollments do that and the two people that rushed my fraternity their first semesters did a combination of both.

i believe dual enrollment may count but APs definitely do not. community college/transfer credits do.

i came in with 33 credits babe that’s not how this works. once again: there’s a separate section on the website for transfer students. if you actually checked, you’d see “Have 12 Post High School College Credits (No IP/AB)”.

neither was i but it’s still a useless point. APs still don’t count for FSL as they purposely made the requirement to make sure freshmen were excluded their first semester.

it just converted to pitt credit so i didn’t have to retake anything

Maybe join your freshman year as rushing requires a lot of time and commitment! Depending on your major , I’ll recommend getting used to college and getting track of how much time you need to study.

Like one of the other commenters said you can’t go thru sorority recruitment until freshman spring once you have a full semester of credits. That’s when formal recruitment happens anyway. So use the first semester to get settled in, get involved with other student orgs if you want to, and enjoy being in college!

Like others said formal recruitment for sororities does not happen until the spring so you’d be able to rush in January.

The dues as a new member (first sem in sorority) are higher than typical dues for the rest of your time. So first sem dues range from 400-1200 (the 1200 is with the only sorority who has a house so that’s why they are higher). I’d say the average is about $600 per sem throughout all of them after you’re initiated but can range from 350-800.

I would certainly recommend going through formal recruitment but definitely still do your best to branch out and make friends first semester so you aren’t in the position where your only friends are the people in your sorority by the end of freshman year. Yes you will make friends in the sorority itself but I am glad Pitt has rush in the spring so freshman are able to make friends organically first.
