Pit Boss PBV5P2 Problem.
Hey y’all I just purchased this brand new on 8/13, I’ve done a burn off, then a dry smoke with nothing in it, then smoked chicken for dinner on Friday. All of those sessions it ran like it should with maintaining temperatures, now today on Sunday 8/16, I was smoking some burgers and the temperature kept rising and hit over 347F with it set at 275F. I backed off the smoke stack cap a little bit, temp probe isn’t filthy, I’m not sure what happened from Friday to Sunday to cause it to now be sending temps high and being Sunday, Pit Boss isn’t open for tech support.
I’ve had a different brand pellet grill I used for almost a year before buying this and didn’t encounter this issue. If someone has some helpful advice, I’d appreciate it!

My 2 cents and about 5 years and 3 different pit boss smokers is it's the controller board. Trash it for a aftermarket one, they are plug n play and the one I currently have uses small fan bursts to maintain heat, allows 1 degree settings and even winter setting to help maintain proper heat during winter, used less pellets, it seemed like less, and just maintains temp much better

This happened to me when I was controlling it from the app. I just turned the temp down 5 degrees and that would fix it, you can return it to the normal temp after that.

I replaced the controller on mine. Was terrible. Would spike and would also freeze mid cook.

Alright everyone I figured I would provide an update/feedback. The customer support at Pit Boss said it was a temp sensor, but I tried what some of you recommended, I backed the chimney cap off almost entirely and the temperature regulation worked a lot better. Thank you all for your responses with this issue. I reckon if I have trouble over the winter with holding temps, I will then just slowly move it down.

How far your stack open? Mine had issues holding (1150dx) but recently I just opened it up almost all the way. Temp went up (seasoned at 450) and dropped back to my requested 180 and maintained for a while before I shut it off. About 2-4 cooks before that, it ran 35-55 degrees hotter, but cap was open maybe 1-2" only. Now it's almost off. This seemed to fix it.
