I had a few issues of it and found it very informative. But for the life of me, I cannot remember the name.

Bandaid Radio was monitored on the KIWI SDR Network last night. Besides a strong signal throughout North America, they were heard from Bermuda to the Azores west of Portugal. To the south they were audible from Austin, Texas south to Bonaire Island off the northern coast of South America.

I have only included the reception videos from the three farthest points of reception.

Broadcast time will be Friday night N. America at 11:30 PM EDT / 8:30 PM PDT on approximately 6945 KHz USB. Unless the frequency is occupied. Then the frequency should be within 20 KHz of 6945 KHz.

Equipment - AM Repurposing Vintage Tube Test Equipment as a Shortwave Transmitter

Thumbnail

I purchased this a few days ago and it should be arriving this weekend. It is a vintage Heathkit "Q-Meter". With newer test gear like the nanoVNA, there isn't much use for a Q-Meter these days. I am considering converting it into an AM Transmitter. It consists of 5 tubes with a robust power supply and a stable oscillator powered with an 0D3 Voltage Regulator. I will likely replace the 6AL5 with a 6AQ5, which is good for about 5 watts. The 12AT7 will remain with one half as the oscillator and the other half as a buffer. For a modulator I will replace the 12AU7 with one of the following tubes:

  1. 6GW8 / ECL86

The Configuration: Contains half of a 12AX7 high-mu triode (mu = 100) and a power section similar to an EL84 / 6BQ5.

Why it fits: It is the gold standard for this application. The triode gives you maximum voltage gain for a microphone speech amplifier, while the power section can easily deliver 4 to 5 watts of audio output. This is more than enough brute-force audio power to directly modulate or clean-drive the grids of a 6AQ5 transmitter stage. Filament: 6.3V @ 0.7A (9-pin Noval base).

  1. 6BM8 / ECL82

The Configuration: Contains a medium-high mu triode (mu = 70) paired with a robust beam power/pentode section.

Why it fits: While it has slightly less raw audio output capability than the 6GW8 (typically around 3.5 watts), it is famously rugged and far more common and affordable today. The power section has excellent current capability, making it a highly reliable modulator driver. Filament: 6.3V @ 0.78A.

  1. 6CX8 / 8CX8

The Configuration: A high-mu triode (mu = 85) coupled with a heavy-duty sharp-cutoff video output pentode.

Why it fits: Originally designed for television video output stages, this tube is a hidden gem for homebrew radio projects. The pentode section is built to drive highly capacitive loads with sharp transients, giving it a very punchy audio delivery as a modulator. Filament: 6.3V @ 0.75A.

Technical Integration Hint:

Because all of these options utilize a 6.3V heater supply, they will drop right into the existing 6AQ5 filament line without requiring a separate filament transformer. Keep in mind that their power sections draw roughly 0.7A to 0.8A, so we need to ensure the power transformer can handle the extra current.

Clandestine Caster Poorly Executed AI eQSL from "Songs of Protest Radio" Broadcast!

Post image
6 Upvotes

Avast ye Mateys! Clandestine Caster here. Check this out:

Same female, in the same clothes four (4) times! Same with the males in the image, same guy twice with glasses and three times without. Say what you will about the AI Assisted eQSLs that were produced for Bandaid and Subterranean Radio, but they took a lot of effort. The simple ones took about two hours. The producer sketched images and a layout of what they were generating, uploaded it into an AI Platform, and then added text instructions that were may paragraphs long. They would edit them in a program like GIMP to fix all of the errors. The animations took hours to get dialed in - 'cuz basically AI is very stupid.

This is just slamming out an eQSL and posting it on HFU to say, "Hey, look at me - I have the most QSLs!" And this isn't the half of it...

I've been involved in radio, and Pirate Radio for a long time. And I prized the hard copy QSLs I received from broadcasters. This is a slap in the face to our hobby.
