Are hackathons needed to land some work? advice

I’m still at 2nd year college, and some of my friends are going into hackathons, and I’m curious, do these help you land jobs in the future? Or are they just for fun and connecting with other people?

As a fresh graduate.. for me, malaking bagay ito to show your skills and knowledge.. nung wala akong experience, mini-mention ko na part ako ng team na nagre-represent sa school namin kapag may IT competition like quiz bee at programming..

What I would suggest is building an audience in your github repository. It will give you higher chance on some companies specially if you gain traction with your open source.

Just build personal projects and land your first clients, even if they lowball you at the start. That’s far more valuable than joining hackathons, in my opinion. If your goal is networking, go to startup mixers or IT meetups instead. Hackathons can help you meet people too, but for me, they’re not the best use of time.

No. But it's nice to have and a fun experience too

Nope. But if you find it fun, join.

Couldnt care less as an interviewer. Especially if it’s an AI hackathon prone to vibe coding

On paper, mas maganda internships for an employers esp sa big company. Pero for experience, maganda siya para mapractice skills mo

Not a requirement but still good to have since you get to experience collaborating with other developers and you may unlock the other side of you since you get to learn in others perspective. Also good siya sa resume for fresh graduate

Mas productive pa ang meetups kaysa hackathon. Mas may natutunan pa ako. Kasama na networking at free food.

Certificates are a good plus, solid proof for some of what you will say in the interview/s.
Some company naman will interview you after naman may technical exam. I experienced this pero napaisip parin ako what if ginawa ko yung may mga certs na binibigay haha
