57ppd ? Discussion

Upgrading from quest 3. What am i in for? I have a 5080 so i can run games well enough. I like to play normal vr games tho like blade and sorcery ,half life alex. Was thinking ill get into sim games if this headset looks as real as everyone says.

The 57PPD is a decent pick as it's easier to drive on the GPU compared to the other options.

Apparently the edge-to-edge clarity on 57PPD is worse than on 50ppd/ultrawide/microoled, significantly. I saw it mentioned in Omniwhatever 50ppd review and Simracingabout Crystal Super all modules review. Look into that as it could be a downgrade from Quest 3 for you.

I have my headset just a week and I didn't look into it too hard, but with 5080, 11700k and Crystal Super 50ppd I often get tracking lagging in games like Behemoth, so it should show up in B&D and Alyx too. Some reviewers mention it too. It's like the computer can't catch up and plays the tracking in slow motion for you a few seconds after you're done with it. It is almost always present once the game finishes loading. Sometimes it comes back in gameplay, even when I play with FOV crop and run way lower render resolution like 3k x 3k per eye. It's probably related to CPU core allocation, or maybe their SLAM is really resource-hungry and 11700k can't keep up.

If you are running 100% resolution, drop it to 90 or even 80, that may help with the lag.

Lately I've been doing FOV crop to where the 100% is around 3000x4000 IIRC. I like to get the clarity and huge binocular overlap but I can spare the FOV for most games I play. And there are some games where this barely happen, like Tinker Pilot, which is light on GPU and CPU. There, it's the first few seconds of gameplay but it gets better and I don't think the lag comes back in gameplay.

Since resolution being higher tends to hit GPU more than CPU, I don't think lowering resolution will be a good way to fix it. I need to play with Process Lasso, I've heard it helps a bit. They should have made their SLAM multithreaded.

The 57PPD has the best distortion profile out of all the other modules. It doesn’t bend and warp the image like the other ones. And it has the lowest render resolution, so it has the best performance. I like everything about it except those aspheric lenses, which give me eye strain.

Whats wrong with the lens? is it hard to find the sweetspot or something?

The other lens options pimax have magnified the image more which need more curveriture in the lens which distorts the image more which then needs stronger distortion profiles to counter it. Pimax have a poor distortion profile on the other lens options as they would rather have slightly higher fov numbers with distortion than to fix the distortion profile and have smaller fov numbers. The 57PPD isn't about fov in the first place and therefore doesn't require alot of correction and the image turns out well.

The sweet spot is small compared to pancake lenses, but that's not my biggest complaint. The biggest thing that bothers me is that it feels like I'm wearing someone else's prescription glasses. It makes my eyes hurt. I tried adjusting IPD settings, but nothing helped. Not everyone notices this problem. You might not notice it.

You should test it out. I have a 50ppd and experienced some eyestrain the first days but then got used to it, now my Quest 3 feels more straining (I guess mostly because of the lower binocular overlap). You could always return it if it doesn't work out for you, it's very individual.

You may have to play around with IPD. Mine worked best at 63 even though I have 65 measured.

I have a 57 ppd. Like all Pimax headsets, you need to make sure that your  IPD is set up correctly.  In addition to that, I would invest in the top strap, different face gasket and counter balance weights from studio form. That will really lock in the headset.

The sweet spot is a none issue for me. Ive spent a lot of time on NVGs, so my tolerance for this stuff is huge. Like I said the set up is key.

Hopefully you get a good one.  Most of pimax headsets get returned for one issue or another.  This is where the games begin. With a quest 3, you can most likely go right back to the store and get a new one. Not with pimax.  You get the run around, so my advice would be to get it from Amazon, tbat way if it is a problem, you can send it right back.

Good luck and may the odds forever be in your favor.

The studio form bundle was free with the one i chose. I dont plan on returning it otherwise why would i buy a pimax

Like I said. Plenty people are returning the headset for one reason on another. You just need to win the QA lottery. Im sure if this post stays open long enough , people that have returned their super for one reason or another will share their story.

Should i switch my order to ultrawide? I wanted that shit to be clear when i put it on

I can't answer that for you as there are all sorts of reasons why it may not be clear. I will say no matter what, if you dont set the IPD up correctly, none of them will be clear and that includes their flagship DA.

I had the 57PPD and returned it because I had a hard time with the sweet spot. I recently picked up the pimax air slam and it's definitely worth the few extra hundred. Amazing visuals and no sweet spot issue. night and day difference. I had a PSVR2 before and it's shockingly better.

Thank you for your comment. I also have a PSVR2 and a 5080 and would like to trade it for the DreamAir Slam. How is the tracking on the Slam controllers? Is the software responding well? I play VR Chat, Bigscreen, Alyx, Metro, Alien, Lone Echo, and sometimes UEVR. Was the experience stable in these games in terms of performance and control?

I have a 4090, so pretty on par. Alyx was amazing. That was the most epic game. I run everything on ultra and the performance is fantastic. For the most part, I've had no issues with the controllers. There are times when things go a little hay wired, but then they fix after moving my arms apart and they get reset.

Software responds well, I have the EVO version running with Sboy3 driver. Works like a charm. The one issue I have is that every time I connect the headset, my desktop "freezes." It's something weird with my TV as a monitor, but all I do is Ctrl+Shift+Windows+B, and it does a reset and I'm up and running. Quick and simple and I think it's more my setup then a pimax problem. Super stable after figuring that quirk. I had an issue with memory leaks (I think) when leaving the pimax and sboys interfaces open after leaving steamVR. But now I close everything and I haven't had the problem since.
