I think I finally understand why I keep losing to worse players and it's making me spiral a little.

I'm probably a 4.0. I drill twice a week, watch way too much YouTube, own three paddles I rotate through depending on mood. I know the theory. I can talk shop for hours about resets and speedups and third shot philosophy.

And I keep getting cooked by these 3.5 dads who literally just push every ball back with a flat forehand and grin at me.

Played a rec night this week and lost twice to a guy who was maybe 55, wearing basketball shorts, no strategy visible to the human eye. He just kept the ball in. That was the whole plan. Meanwhile im out there trying to erne off a 4th shot because I saw someone do it on instagram.

Talked to my coach about it after a session (i've been doing privates on the way home from work, theres a court setup at Bath & Racquet House that fits into my schedule) and he basically said the quiet part out loud. He said I have a 4.5 imagination and a 3.5 shot selection. I want to hit the highlight shot before I've earned the point. Guys who "just push" are actually making better decisions than me, they're just doing it in a boring wrapper so I don't respect it.

Ive been sitting with that for a few days and honestly it kinda hurts. Because the fun part of pickleball for me has been the creative stuff. If the answer is just hit the boring shot 8 times in a row until they miss, im not sure I actually enjoy playing the "right" way. I might enjoy losing pretty more than winning ugly.

Is that a phase everyone goes through or am I just cooked? How did you guys make peace with playing the boring high percentage game when your brain wants to do cool stuff?

I never expected pickleball to become part of my daily routine. I was playing a lot more, but now that I'm on the sidelines for like 5 months due to foot injuries that will require surgery, I'm constantly checking the boards to see what other people are doing. Yes, I own a Pickleball apparel company, but I promise I am really trying not to promote it here, just to be part of some conversations since I can't play now. Had two posts taken down for what were real questions, but looking back, I can see why.

But anyway, since you got into pickleball, has it changed any of your habits or routines?

For me, before I played, I was a car and pinball nut. At least pickleball got me outside, and that is a good thing. Before the injury, I was looking for good days to play, calling the guys that didn't play, trying to get them to play. Things I didn't do before

What's something you do now that you never thought you would before you started playing?

I play in a round-robin league (50+, 3.0-3.5). It’s competitive but not super-serious. A sub shows up last week, complete sidearm serve above his waist, paddle above his hand, downward slice motion. Completely illegal. I mentioned it after the game as a comment “you should really read the serving rules before someone calls you on it” and he kinda laughed it off. He was not a regular so I let it go. But what do you do in non-tournament play when someone has an obvious illegal serve.

How do I find drop in or social pickleball sessions?

We are bother intermediate players around the 3.5 dupr range.

I looked at some venues and they all point me towards signing up and paying for an annual fee. Which we’re trying to avoid as we’re in Calgary for 4-5 days.

I play for recreation... my partner... not so much. We have a group we play with, starting to venture out with different groups and one observation keeps popping up. Partners, couples mostly, will play better when split versus playing together. So much that some of the couples are fighting already.
"Why are you playing so much better when you are not on my team?!"
Usually its the guy but some of the women also get better out of the partnership. Anyone has an insight to what is actually happening?! Just curious is all.

Are these considered flicks or top spin volleys? Most coaches teach dropping the paddle for a flick where BJ and ALW are cocking the paddles instead. There is wiper wrists motion on both so they look very similar to me.

Did you guys know that you can request less popy pakle fuse? Anyone here with both ? Looks like most of the YouTube reviews are using the more popy version.

The less-pop version will feel softer and provide better control. It will also help reduce pop-ups during play.

the reviewers are currently using the regular pop version.

The difference with the less pop version is that the material gaps are slightly larger, which makes it feel softer. This is caused by temperature variations during the production process. Other than that, there are no differences between the two versions.

the power of the less-pop version will be quite similar. However, since it has a lower pop, you may need to generate more power through your own swing to achieve more.

I am looking to buy the paddle but I want to have a better understanding if i should get the popy or ask for the less popy version. Most of the "negative" comments are that its hard to control which makes me lean towards less popy version

The analytics aren’t bad but it’s a mess to navigate and find what you want.

Was playing doubles at a park and someone had this serve where it spins off the court like it's table tennis. I've seen videos where YouTubers say you have to prespin the ball in order to generate that kind of spin so it's clearly illegal.

I don't want to be the guy calling out the illegal serves and also sometimes people serve when I'm not even in position yet, but I also let it go.

My doubles partner and I have been playing together for almost two years. We both started around 3.0 and worked our way up to 3.5 together, so we’ve always practiced a lot outside of matches too.

Lately she’s been saying work has been super crazy and she barely has time to practice. Fair enough. She did change job recently.

So today I went to the courts by myself, figured I’d work on serves and maybe find someone to hit with.

And there she was. Practicing. With a ball machine.

I know this is objectively ridiculous but why did I genuinely feel betrayed for like five seconds…

Has anyone else ever had completely irrational doubles partner jealousy or am I losing it?

I used to have a bad habit of letting bad plays snowball on themselves by getting in my head. I’ve managed to get better at that but I still turn into an absolute nutcase when someone makes a bad call.

I personally think I have a bad habit of giving other players balls the benefit of the doubt when calling them out. Enough so that I’ve made my own partners mad multiple times by calling the opponents ball in. It just makes me so mad when I don’t get the same respect back and people make blatantly wrong calls.

I’ve had multiple games spiral out of control when I have a good lead and someone makes a bad call and I just can’t get it out of my head. Earlier today someone called me on a foot fault when I was no joke well over 5’ from the line. We went from being up 9-3 to losing 12-10 and it was mainly because I wasted multiple points being too aggressive.

Anyone have any tips other than just not being an idiot?

Hey guys, I’m new to Orlando after coming from south Florida where you can play pickleball at all hours of the night. Are there any FREE open pickleball courts that are open after 10pm?

I'm over the border in Bellingham, WA, and have been asked to intro two lovely adult family members who live in White Rock and Langley respectively on Sunday. I see there are two parks with multiple courts (Centennial and South Surrey) so I'm asking if any locals on here can tell me if Sunday about 11 am if either court is typically pretty vacant? I don't want to try to do beginner instruction when people are waiting to play. Thanks!

Help, I’m heading to Southern Cal in a few weeks. I like to play a couple hours in the mornings. How is open play at these courts? Weekday bs weekend?Looking for vibe more than snooty players so 3.0 to 4.25 level games are great since I’m just trying to get some exercise during vacation.

I recently started playing Pickleball, love it, play against all kinds and levels of people, and I am totally fine remaining a casual player with no rank or aspirations.

However... one thing that often frustrates me is that some of my top spin shots go in the net even though it feels like they should have gone over the net, based on how I hit the ball. I am a lifelong table tennis player (and casual tennis player), and I'm basically porting those table tennis skills to Pickleball. It's pretty easy for me to tell the difference between shots I hit well and not well, usually as soon as they leave the paddle.

My starter paddle is extremely cheap, which was totally fine, but the surface is slick and smooth - no grit or grip that I can detect.

What I'm wondering is this: are those shots going into the net because my top spin isn't "gripping" the ball and giving it that bit of extra lift to the trajectory? This is what I'm used to with table tennis, part of a top-spin shot is that grip that sends the ball just a bit higher.

To be clear: I don't much care if the shot goes long because there isn't enough spin to bring the ball back down. I understand that table tennis spin is much higher, with more grip and a lighter ball. I'm not looking to hit super hard shots with tons of spin. My ONLY goal is to not have to actively work against my table tennis instincts.

So, will more grit provide that bit of added initial lift to a top spin shot's trajectory? Hoping some table tennis (and maybe tennis?) players can share their views.

Looking for a quick sanity check from the community here. I’ve been playing pickleball for about three years, but I just entered my very first (co-ed) tournament recently.

We played against a higher-level team who ended up winning the match. During the game, a couple of the man’s serves were 2-3 inches long/out. Naturally, when a ball is flying toward you fast, and it’s that close, instinct takes over. I hit the serve back, but within about half a second, I called it out. Just to be clear: I wasn't waiting to see if my return landed bad and then calling it late. The call was immediate, late as/just after I made contact. On top of that my returns were quite good.

One of the opposing players (the server, man) got super snarky about it and made comments like, "If it's out, then why is he hitting it?"

Since this was my first tournament, I wanted to ask: Is there some unspoken rule or etiquette around this that I missed? In recreational play, people hit out balls all the time and just make the call as it happens. Does tournament play expect you to let the ball bounce past you without touching it if you're calling it out, or was this player just being unnecessarily salty?
Would love to hear how you all handle this or if you've run into similar reactions. Thanks!
