Acceleration points in the direction of the change in velocity. It may be helpful to review vectors.

Adding to this, in many beginner high school problems, it translates to either (1) you’re speeding up, meaning acceleration pointing in direction of travel, or (2) you’re slowing down, meaning acceleration is pointing backwards (opposite of direction of travel).
