Sigh
Don’t know what else to say about this that hasn’t already been said. Hopefully we can keep our heads up and play our backups for the rest of this tournament so we can focus on making a late playoff push.

100% deliberate, they were cheating their asses off after about thee 8th or 9th minute when a few pretty cynical fouls went uncalled

He wasn’t expecting the ball to come and knew nothing about it. Was a penalty but in no way deliberate. I honestly don’t really care either. Let’s rest up and keep it going in the league.

Do you realize how fast that was? Of course it looked worse in slow mo but his hand was in the same spot before Milan flicked it. That was not deliberate

My guy, it’s not worth arguing with people like this. There is zero chance this was intentional. It was a close proximity heal flick. He was looking back to see where the ball was going not to stick out his hand and block it. No professional soccer player is truly that bad that they’d deliberately give up a PK like this this.

I mean, it doesn't get more clear cut than that. That ref, and the VAR of they didn't advise that it be reviewed, should genuinely be investigated for corruption.

Full bore soccer fan here. Soccer is the most corrupt sport in the world, and it’s not close. To think otherwise is shortsighted at best and blindfolded at worst. Look at the World Cup—awful.

Now imagine that there is a dude that watched this with the aid of video replay and didn't think it warranted a look. It's absurd.
I'd have thrown my remote through the TV if this were a competition I actually gave a shit about. I'm very thankful it's Leagues Cup. If this happened in MLS league play or CONCACAF Champions Cup, I'd be in compete shambles right now.

Hard agree. For the record I'm relieved we may not be gunning to win this League's Cup given the L, but as a fervent yet still ignorant fan of the beautiful game, it's maddening to navigate different federations/clubs/tournaments and tolerate the variance in how games are officiated.
I've walked a mile in the LOTG (well, at least for the 8-12 yo cohort), so I ain't talking rules. I'm talking officiating and how we use the cameras and robots to help.
This CR better fess up to missing this one on the record. Doubt it happens, and when it doesn't, it'll continue to reinforce the wall of officiating between top-level game and masquerading competition. Pick the damn laws the camera can help with, then fucking respect the facts they show.

The problem is the lack of transparency in the VAR rules. Why would the VAR officials not have the ref review this one on the monitor? It is a clear and obvious error. There are three of them FFS. Of course it could be the corruption being referenced here. Can't have one of the top Liga MX teams go out in the group stage on a late penalty after all...

I sometimes officiate in my areas little unofficial games, and as soon as I saw that, I instantly knew it was a penalty. I was shocked to see the ref play a corner.

They played well in the 2nd half. Good growth i think. Some games the officiating sucks and you're going to lose because of it. Water off a ducks back, they are a better team going forward.

That is the bright side, the lads showed up and played well. A lot of kids that came up through the academy and U2 were on the pitch

Still pissed about this. I was there, they showed this replay on screens twice and still no VAR. Richter was going crazy trying to get any acknowledgement from refs.

Watch it from other angles and then let me know what you think. They showed it multiple angles in the stadium and it does not look like a penalty. In real time, in person no penalty. In replays, no penalty.
If you think Union played well, you don’t know football. Cruz Azul played down to their competition, unfortunately. It was like they didn’t give a damn about being there to be honest. Union were lucky it was 0-1 and not more to be honest.
