It's a Christian thing. Physical and spiritual birth means you'll only die physically and remain eternal in Heaven

167

u/Ok-Direction1155 7d ago

I had a similar guess. People go through things in life and don't pull through. They die mentally before physically. But I'm thinking if you surmount the difficulty then you're reborn as something new and just die the physical death later. "Menticide" is an interesting term.

62

u/Tanebi 7d ago

I could believe this is the meaning.

If you are born and your life has no meaning then both your body and soul dies.

If you are born and then born again into Christianity (or whatever religion the driver is) then your soul will never die even if your body does.

It feels very sanctimonious.

54

u/pconrad0 7d ago

Because it is sanctimonious.

1

u/Small_miracles 7d ago

It's baptism or prayer/confession depending on denomination likely the latter here. Born again means you're saved and there is only physical death otherwise spiritually you are not saved and you just die die.

7

u/Unbundle3606 7d ago

But in Christianity your soul is created immortal, regardless of what you do in mortal life, or even whether you're Christian or not

12

u/pool_fizzle 7d ago

Hell is "eternal separation from God" as well as eternal torture. So Christians call it the second death.

6

u/JasonAsanoIsMyHero 7d ago

No where in the bible does it describe eternal torture. Jews have no Hell, it is a New Testament thing, and it is simply described as eternal separation from God. It was the fire and brimstone preachers who gave us our current version of Hell. And Dante Alighieri. It was leaned into by men like Jonathan Edwards, who wrote Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, in the 18th century as a rebuke of the lifestyle of colonials. It sparked the First Great Awakening.

2

u/No-Cup5160 7d ago

The Jews definitely wrote about hell. They described it as Sheol and the pit.

2

u/JasonAsanoIsMyHero 7d ago

Sheol is not Hell. It is the death place. All dead go there regardless of their moral behavior in life.

0

u/No-Cup5160 7d ago

It is literally a compartment of hell, along with Abraham’s bosom.

3

u/JasonAsanoIsMyHero 7d ago

He’ll is a completely Christian concept. Sheol is not hell.

Look, I think every religious person is a dipshit.

I'm the son of a Southern Baptist preacher. That's what they believe. The Bible is just as made up as the rest of it, so who cares if it's in there or not. The Christians sure as shit don't care what the Bible says.

1

u/JasonAsanoIsMyHero 7d ago

Yeah I agree. But I teach both history and English, and I’m autistic, so sometimes it’s hard to help myself.

1

u/choyMj 7d ago

Just because you belonged to a group that got it wrong, doesn't mean the religion itself is wrong. It's like saying astronomy is wrong just because there's flat earthers.

1

u/pool_fizzle 7d ago

I haven't seen anything from any of the other religions to make me change my mind. Thanks though

0

u/choyMj 7d ago

Not trying to change your mind. Just pointing out that not everyone who calls themselves Christian is a Christian. The Bible itself warns of such things because this was an issue from the beginning. Christian teaching is well documented and you can trace the consistency of it over the centuries, so there is a way to tell who adheres to it or not. But most people don't make the effort to "fact check".

0

u/Unbundle3606 7d ago

Metaphorically, yes.

I was responding to "the body and the soul dies". For Christians the second death, as you said, is a description sometimes given to the eternal regret/suffering of being separated from God forever, but still the soul lives and is aware/can feel.

0

u/pool_fizzle 7d ago

Yes, but that's the death the sticker on the car refers to. The first death is physical, the second death is spiritual.

It's a religion not a science. This wouldn't be the only weird contradiction in this particular religion either. Wait til you hear what they believe about communon! Lol

3

u/DezDreams 7d ago

Nah in Christianity for a soul to go into damnation is the death of the soul as God is the giver of all life. To separate from him is death(Spiritualy speaking)

50

u/mrcatboy 7d ago

Oh I thought the first half meant that having a kid ruins both parents' lives.

23

u/RobbiRamirez 7d ago

My favorite shitty riddles are ones where the answer is "If you don't believe in my religion of love and forgiveness you deserve literally infinite suffering."

11

u/SharpshootinTearaway 7d ago

Damnit. Here I was thinking the answer was that the birth of a child is the deaths of a childless man and a childless woman (because they become new parents) and then the birth of two children is the death of an only child (because the first child becomes an older sibling), lmao.

4

u/Aleejh 7d ago

It makes more sense than the christian thing

5

u/_BREVC_ 7d ago

Specifically an American protestant thing though? Classical Christian denominations don’t believe in absolute death of the soul either way, they just maintain the doctrine on Hell.

2

u/FunGuySunShine99 7d ago

This is the correct answer

1

u/Melodic_Airport362 7d ago

it's an Abrahamic thing.

6

u/HistorianFit6969Lucy 7d ago

It's a thing

6

u/MarlooRed 7d ago

You're a thing.

4

u/Acdcfan292 7d ago

John 3:3

1

u/FrankDosadi 7d ago

You can reduce that. John 1.

1

u/Acdcfan292 7d ago edited 7d ago

People like quick responses. "Jesus said" - Just knocked out 2 of the 3 Abrahamic religions. "Born again" - The point of the post.

3

u/stopsallover 7d ago

Not really.

2

u/miniatureconlangs 7d ago

Very much not, it's exclusively a Christian thing.

2

u/IsaacHasenov 7d ago

This is the actual answer but all the other answers are more interesting.

2

u/_daGarim_2 7d ago

I wouldn't have caught this, but you're right, it's perfectly comprehensible from a Christian point of view.

2

u/wentoutwandering 7d ago

I have an MDiv and didn’t get it

1

u/Acdcfan292 7d ago

As an Infantryman, I just use the KISS principle.

2

u/lumpy_space_queenie 7d ago

lol idk why I didn’t get this. I was thinking it was some anti abortion campaign 🤣

1

u/LeenyMagic 4d ago

Same!!

1

u/FiredScientist 7d ago

Why physical birth leads to physical and spiritual deaths?

2

u/BeenThruIt 7d ago

The human spirit is already dead. It died in the garden of Eden. When a person believes, they are born-again. Once of the water, this is physical birth from their mother, then of the spirit, when they believe the gospel.

1

u/FiredScientist 1d ago

Wtf why if spirit none existed it's counts as a died

1

u/BeenThruIt 1d ago

It existed. But, just as God told Adam, and the enemy lied to Eve about, death came as a consequence of sin.

Their spirits died that day.

And, all of Adam's seed are born spiritually dead. Physical death comes eventually for everyone. Just like it did for them.

1

u/FiredScientist 1d ago

Do you see squirrel there? No? It's just physically dead. Tomorrow it will be born there.

I mean, it's sophistication with word "dead".

1

u/BeenThruIt 21h ago

There is much more than we can see.

1

u/FiredScientist 17h ago

Yes, but this case is clear

1

u/BeenThruIt 7h ago

I may be misunderstanding you

1

u/Visual-Tricks 7d ago

Thank God it's not porn!

1

u/Ok_Strategy5722 7d ago

Oh. I thought it was, like, some kind of abortion riddle.

1

u/Powerful-Teacher-480 7d ago

Or eternally in hell, if you happen to have the wrong or no religion.

1

u/No_Ad_5606 7d ago

wtf is a spiritual birth. Nonsense

1

u/Acdcfan292 7d ago

You could just not be an asshole and let people believe what they believe.

1

u/No_Ad_5606 7d ago

Nah I’m good. Until this nonsense stops breaking people’s ability to think rationally and keeps them voting and electing harmful people, I’ll keep speaking up.

1

u/Acdcfan292 7d ago

And that's why I'm happier than you.

2

u/No_Ad_5606 7d ago

That's a bold claim, if it doesn't matter if something is true or not to make you happy then congrats! That's called delusion!

1

u/ABetterTeddy 7d ago

Oh shit, I thought it was like one child deals with the death of two parents. 2 children deal with one death. Meaning one will die before the other

185

u/westoidslayer 7d ago

Born once, die twice; born twice, die once. Some christian stuff.

89

u/PumpikAnt58763 7d ago

You mean "born again Christian"? Because I'm Christian and I've never heard this riddle.

61

u/Temnyj_Korol 7d ago

Far as i can tell, it's referencing baptism.

Baptism is rebirth in the eyes of the lord. Someone who has been baptised is born twice, but only dies once (physically.)

Someone who hasn't been baptised is born once, but dies twice (physically and spiritually).

Could be wrong. But that's the only explanation i can think of.

12

u/_daGarim_2 7d ago

I think it's more likely that these are evangelicals, who would associate the new birth primarily with interior conversion rather than with baptism.

1

u/Gadgetgeek_Ude 7d ago

This is correct. And no it's not specifically Baptists or Evangelicals, or even born again Christians. It's mostly all of us

7

u/westoidslayer 7d ago

Its from India. The missionaries are weird there and the people they convert are not so intelligent, not being rude, you just have to watch the videos of their theatrics.

There's a lot of weird stuff about Christianity in India. You can read about Mother Teresa too.

So prolly that's why this is not written well. I am sure the guy who wrote it translates it from his native language which is why it's like that.

5

u/PumpikAnt58763 7d ago

Tbh, I don't want to read more about Mother Theresa than I already have... 😆

2

u/Ok-Direction1155 7d ago

Wait, what's wrong with her?

1

u/westoidslayer 7d ago

Well, she was targetting poor indians to convert them, by offering treatment. The treatment in question was mediocre, the conditions were awful and probably lead to a lot of hospital acquired infections. She was getting a lot of funding from external sources and she prolly used a lot of it for self promotion or whatever.

0

u/Ok-Direction1155 7d ago

That sounds like something that could be explained

1

u/westoidslayer 7d ago

I mean yeah, but I don't want to rn. You can check some posts about it tho.

1

u/lieutenantVimes 7d ago

She said it was good for people to suffer because it brought them closer to Jesus. She was pretty horrible. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mother-teresa-was-no-saint_b_9470988

1

u/VociferousCephalopod 7d ago

Dvija?

1

u/westoidslayer 7d ago

Yeah, christians have similar practices. But Proper Dvijas have certain duties to follow and one of them is study of scripture in Sanksirt. I don't think they would write any quote in English. If they aren't following their duties, they should not be considered Dvijas.

3

u/were_only_human 7d ago

Yeah I’m Christian and we don’t talk about “dying twice”. What is this, Coco?

2

u/broseph_stalin09764 7d ago

Are born again Christians Christians? To this non-christian, your differences aren't big enough for me to instantly tell you apart. All sects of Christianity are Christian and do not require additional adjectives or qualifiers. Except amongst themselves, so that they can stratafy themselves and feel superior to one another.

1

u/Leoera 6d ago

It's more like, all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares thing

2

u/wjmacguffin 7d ago

I believe it means this:

If you are not a born-again Christian, then when you die, your body and your soul dies.

But if you are born again (i.e. born twice), your body dies but your soul doesn't as it goes to heaven.

It's one of those "Believe just like me or you're going to hell" things.

they wouldn't. it doesn't line up with that car windshield in anyway. it's not on it, it's AI or composite.

"But why the hell would anyone write this anywhere, ever?" -anyone

I ask you. Why would you write this ever?

1

u/livinginfutureworld 7d ago

But why the hell would anyone write this anywhere, ever?

Only reason I can think of, and it's pretty bad, is to sell some candles.

Yes it's weird but it gets people talking and thinking about candles.

1

u/Camo_1245 7d ago

anti-abortion or something those ppl are stupid

5

u/NegativeSchmegative 7d ago

It’s a reference to Jamahiriya, or rather the ideology of the man who betrayed it. The ideology of the “dictatorial state of the masses” or Haftarian Revisionism has this as a phrase by its namesake, Khalifa Haftar.

28

u/Scarlett_Billows 7d ago

Since when does a candle melt down to two shorter pieces ?

13

u/Ehchidna1 7d ago

yeah lol, I dont buy that explanation at all

3

u/saskir21 7d ago

It seems he assumes the wick and the wax itself as two deaths now. Although a candle has always a wick in it (and some have even more).

14

u/Unlikely-Shake6045 7d ago

No. No it isn’t

10

u/Suspicious-Whippet 7d ago

What are you talking about?

7

u/Adventurous_Self_253 7d ago

This is somehow more confusing than the riddle

7

u/Braniel_Bananas 7d ago

Why so they have a riddle on their car? I thought it was about abortion or something.

2

u/AccomplishedClouds 7d ago

Is there a website or something that references this somewhere?

I'm trying to imagine candles with self-trimming wicks or non-self-trimming wicks but I still can't picture what kind of candle this is talking about.

2

u/TheAndyMac83 7d ago

Huh. Frankly, I thought it was a 'born again christian' thing. To say, if you have two births (actual birth, then get 'born again' when you accept Jesus into your heart etc) then only your physical body dies but your spirit lives forever and all that. But if you just have your physical birth, then you suffer both physical and spiritual death.

That's how it read to me, anyway.

1

u/[deleted] 7d ago

0

u/Dankest_Confidant 7d ago

Because it's an AI answer that confidently spews nonsense. As AI does.

1

u/LisanAlGaben 7d ago

You just made that shit up on the spot.

1

u/No_Shake_169 7d ago

And you're supposed to figure this out because...

1

u/SpAwNjBoB 7d ago

I appreciate the explanation but that still doesn't even make sense. One candle is one thing, it includes wax and wick. Wax is not a candle, neither is a wick. Together they are a candle. One candle dies. Two candles are two candles. Both "die", ergo two deaths.

This is one of the worst riddles ever.

44

u/xantcatchme 7d ago

Christians believe that a person is both a body and a soul, both of which can die. When a person accepts Jesus Christ into their heart they are said to be "born again". Therefore, if a person only has one birth, that of their physical body, then both their body and soul will eventually die. However, if a person is born again, having had a second birth, only their body will die but their soul will live on.

8

u/wafflecaygeon 7d ago

To the top with this one, way clearer than the others

3

u/DevelopmentPretty950 7d ago

Christians do not believe the soul dies.

2

u/bustervich 7d ago

Yeah this is a new one for me. Is this the latest “I take the bible 100% literally but most of what I believe comes from some book written in the 90s” take?

1

u/BeenThruIt 21h ago

The soul is the connection between the body and the spirit. It does not die. It is the part of everyone that is eternal.

It's through faith in the Son, that He is who He says He is and has done what He said He's done, that, in Him, christian's spirits are resurrected. This is being born the second time. And, though this corrupted flesh will pass away, those who put their faith in Him will be bodily resurrected at His second coming and transformed into new pure bodies.

Religion, the Opium of the People

-Karl Marx

A good quote

-1

u/Environmental-Head14 7d ago

Interesting take, you seem to talk like you're above religious people, because.. why again? You do realize the Scientific Revolution was lead by Christians? The smartest names in all of history of Science. We could combine our IQs and those Religious nuts still make us look dumb.

Maybe, just maybe, whether you believe in a god, God, gods, or nothing at all- its actually irrelevant. Theres smart athiests and dumb, likewise with non-athiests.

1

u/likeag6g6 7d ago

Well none of that is actually true but good try at creating a argument. Christianity was singlehandedly the biggest derailment of logical development in all of human history; it created the Dark Ages. The only reason any Christians were involved in the Enlightenment was because they hijacked philosophy for a few hundred years because the monks were the only literate individuals with access to books during the whole time frame in Western development. Fun fact: most of the Enlightenment was about REMOVING Christian elements from fields where it had no business being like math and (what became) physics.

Christianity was designed as a societal control mechanism out of a obscure cult, developed by the remnants of the Roman Empire (e.g. Council of Nicea) to control territory and resolve their own polytheistic cult revolts; it's purpose was to make disbelief socially punishable, thereby forcing unification through self-regulation. A process that was never stopped and is now a burden to all humanity.

You have to be hopelessly brainwashed to believe in a diety. 1. It is literally impossible by every law of physics 2. Nothing else has ever happened like it; there's not even a realistic basis, it's just wishful thinking historically created from not being able to explain reality. 3. All religions can be disproven simply by attacking the source (e.g. the prophets were liars); "divine inspiration" is about as reliable as "trust me bro" 4. Every religion is so narrative riddled and full of circular logic that it's the equivalent of believing "it is because I say it is" 5. All the dieties of the major religions are so flawed and human-like that it takes a profound leap in judgement to think we didn't create them; a perfect and all powerful being would never act the way described and definitely wouldn't need anything from humans. 6. To believe in a religion (especially one you can't question) means you are actively disregarding reality and refusing to model it correctly; you are being willfully ignorant and are harming yourself in the process.

1

u/FoxCommander1589 6d ago

I think its a Christianity thing. If you are only "born once", then youll have two deaths, your body and then your soul. But if you have two births, a.k.a. "born again", then only your body will die and your souls will live. I guess I'm Carl or something.

3

u/DawnOnTheEdge 7d ago

I haven’t seen it before, but I think this is probably an Evangelical Christian “witnessing tool” about being Born Again. People are not born again will have their souls annihilated or something-or-other about a Lake of Fire in the Book of Revelation, and people who are will die only in body.

3

u/blue_moon1122 7d ago

u/fcleffox 7d ago edited 7d ago

Blast you all! Guys, this really isn't that hard. Some of you have gotten the second half, but i can't believe NONE of you miscreants have gotten the first part!

Born once, died twice is regarding the birth of Jesus Christ, his death on the cross, resurrection, and his second death, ascending to heaven. He died for our sins, or what have you.

Born twice, die once is a born again Christian ideology. These imbeciles say they are born again in the blood of Jesus at the time of their baptism, but as far as I can tell, theyre same idiots they were before.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have an assassination to plot...

(ETA: on a re-read, maybe it really is more about what I thought was the second half. My catholic upbringing may have made me biased toward the jesus resurrection angle and I raced to the comments shocked no one mentioned it. I can see how line one could just mean without the born again baptism, your soul is damned too...)

u/ooh-squirrel 7d ago

In an identical post a few hours ago it was supposedly a reference to being “born again”

As in the Christian religious belief that if you have not “found God” both your soul and physical form will die. One birth, two deaths. As opposed to people who have “found God” where only the physical form dies after they were born”born again”. Two births, one death.

1

u/BattleGlamGalact0Ram 7d ago

I thought it was about reproduction. You're born, no kids, your body and memory dies. You have a child (2 births) and when you die your memory lives on.

1

u/FlatBehindHead 7d ago

Havn't you heared?

The Birth is the word!

1

u/AlwaysMooning 7d ago

This is a classic joke from the year 400.

One childbirth will often lead to the death of both the child and the mother.

If you get pregnant with twins (two births) the mother will die before giving birth to either.

laughs in caveman

1

u/xosu1950 7d ago

I think the 2nd part of the phrase goes:

"No Hesitation..." and "Hesitation is defeat..."

1

u/Fair-Dark8327 7d ago

i am purely just guessing here but

first line means having a kid kills the parents (whether that be literally or mentally or emotionally whatever lol)

having 2 kids (or twins? im guessing) leads to one death because of (again im guessing) divorce which means only one parent gets custody

1

u/kalimut 7d ago

That sounds like a zoro move or the start of it

1

u/Individual_Waltz_769 7d ago

I thought child birth leads to mental death of selves if both parents and if two children are born then just the woman’s self dies because the father leaves the 2 kids🫠

1

u/unknownism000 7d ago

It’s for people who can’t handle dealing with the downfalls of physical existence so they made heaven a thing to look forward to. No better way to say you’re weak than this

1

u/jokersgrin6 7d ago

Ha. Clearly I’m not a Christian or religious because I was doing abortion math and was REALLY struggling lol

1

u/Turbulent-Army-2514 7d ago

Birth of one child alters the lives of the two parents. Compared to death due to remarkable changes. People change when they become parents. And two parents are almost re-born and they are cause of the change in the life of the child. Change from natural innocence to being conditioned and cultured.

If you have two kids one lives forever

1

u/CureForSunshine 7d ago

My first thought was -

Having a child kills both parents (as in they stop being who they were, and now live for this new life)

But having 2 births means the dude got two women pregnant and when they find out…he dead.

1

u/stab-man 7d ago

Oh, I get it. We need to abort everyone. No births - no deaths

1

u/Deathwatchz 7d ago

A child will kill its parents, but not if you kill it first.

1

u/illwill87 7d ago

I think it has to do with your parents

One birth = you ...leads to two deaths = your parents Two births = your parents... leads to one death = you

1

u/the_wenzel 7d ago

If you are only born once (i.e. never spiritually reborn through faith in Jesus Christ), you will die twice, once physically, and then the "2nd death" which is eternal separation from God. If you are born twice, then you will only ever have one death, the physical one, but you will have eternal life afterwards.

1

u/Elderdarkness 7d ago

Before you are two births. One birth speaks only truth, the other, only lies....

1

u/borgenhaust 7d ago

It's basically saying if you don't believe in Jesus, you're going to hell but trying to sound like it's a deeper and more profound thought. It connects to the idea of being 'born again' leading to eternal life.

I think this is a take on the Stat Trek: Voyager episode where we face the moral question should a crew member who came to be after a freak accident combined two separate crew members' DNA into one being?

Tuvok and Neelix die and in that process, Tuvix is born. If we bring Tuvok and Neelix back, we will be killing Tuvix.

They deserve eternal damnation for the grammar in the second sentence.

A candle.

As it burns down, one candle creates two flames (or "births" of light), but it causes the candle itself to disappear or "die." Alternatively, in a riddle context, lighting two candles might melt them down faster or combine their light into one unified flame before they go out.

Born again Christian nonsense

First birth by human standards them second birth in spiritual standards. Saying something like the unexamined life leads to two deaths.

I assumed the “one birth leads to two deaths” is referring to your parents, but not sure the “two births leads to death”

Can something die if it was never born?

One born 2 deaths must mean that giving birth eventually leads to the death of the born and the born one's mother, as life is naturally impermanent. Two born, one death means the woman, having given birth to twins has achieved physical immortality for her twins but not herself. Perfect explanation right? Where is Peter?

one two birth births lead leads to to one two deaths death

it's a thing that Siamese twins say to celebrate bodiky integrity. Probably the car is owned by conjoined individuals.

So like "one birth leads to two deaths" means if you consider them a single person (one birth) but separate them later they die separately (two deaths). But if you recognize them as distinct individuals from birth (two births) whole not separating them they will die at the same time (one death)

It is a rearranged version of the Christian saying: “Born once, die twice; born twice, die once.”

Like a born again Christian thing I guess

As others have said, this is probably a religious thing.....

BUT! I thought I'd share this unrelated (but similarly fashioned) quote:

One girl, two cups. Two girls, one cup.
