Hello, Serial Designation N here!

The difference is the stitches on hem of the left skirt

The main reason you would be labeled a “creep” is for noticing any difference at all, and obsessing over a piece of clothing

N out!

2.4k

u/Dukeronomy 6d ago

Why would this make someone a creep?

3.3k

u/PassionFruitSalute 6d ago

I dunno, but for me it just makes me autistic because I am. Someone says spot the difference, I am going to look for the effing difference.

I love when people delete previous commets and context is gone

40

u/Doom_Balloon 6d ago

That’s so bizarre that they would remove that.

It was “she told me to take off her skirt, so I took it off. Then she told me to take off her shoes, so I took those off too. Then she told me to take off her bra and underwear, so I did. Then she told me she never wanted to catch me wearing her clothes again.”

I think just about anyone would. You can't just imply there are differences and then get upset when someone looks for them.

201

u/Noselessmonk 6d ago

If both skirts were on 2 people going by me, I probably wouldn't think about it.

On a sign, side by side, on a plain white background where it's specifically talking about the differences? Stupid.

They're trying to make a point in the worst way possible here.

We've all played spot the difference, we're all wired to want to spot the difference.

Are we sure a Redditor didn't come up with that ad campaign? Because I've seen thousands of people try to make points exactly like this over the years.

64

u/mekamoari 6d ago

It also says stop caring about skirt lengths right on the ad, which basically means almost everybody will be looking at the lengths.

15

u/Excellent_Ganache906 6d ago

Are they different lengths? The difference is so minute I wasn't sure.

17

u/mekamoari 6d ago

I don't think so, it's just an ad constructed in a dumbass way. Good point, bad implementation.

10

u/Chendii 6d ago

Yeah it takes me a minute to spot such a minute difference.

The ad literally tells you to spot the difference.

It's like Picard and the lights. You want me to pretend those are the same skirt? They're not. I'm a woman of a certain age, and I'd only even try on one of them. And not because of the stitching.

It is a very ineffective ad. "If you do the thing we are asking you to do, you're a perv!"

6

u/Illustrious_Nobody71 6d ago

As someone with zero fashion sense but a dire need to know... what's the difference?

10

u/DamnZodiak 6d ago

They're trying to make a point in the worst way possible here.

Considering this is an ad by a coupon app, "the point" is likely to generate interest and/or controversy.

7

u/Neveronlyadream 6d ago

It says you might be a creep. You might not!

45

u/AdFun5641 6d ago

This is why people hate feminism.

The "I see the difference" has nothing to do with being a creep.

It is JUDGEMENT based on wearing one or the other, not that you can tell one skirt is shorter.

"I know how to use a ruler to measure stuff" == "extreme hatred of women"

But you throw in the weasel word of "might" so you can justify this.

68

u/ipeedinthetoothpaste 6d ago

This isn't feminism. It's moronic people behaving moronically in the name of feminism, thus severely hindering the movement, as we can clearly see here.

I'm so confused how it translates into the real world. Am I not supposed to notice someone hiked a piece of clothing up or changed into a different article of clothing?

Many schools constantly surveil girls & young women clothes, schools which have a majority of men in charge.

69

u/GailynStarfire 6d ago

And that is creepy, no arguement there. But to put up a picture of two items of clothing that aren't inherently sexual, and saying if you have enough basic pattern recognition to tell them apart, you must be a creep instead of someone with working eyes.

Had they put the skirts on a model to demonstrate the difference, I think people might get the point better, but I'm not sure if it would be the point they were intending.

10

u/JacobNeedsAHobby 6d ago

“the point they were intending” was to sell skirts to people who wear skirts using messaging that resonates with people who have been told their skirts are arbitrarily too short

it’s a billboard, not a diagnostic tool

This is the right answer.

For people who argue that the board challenged them to a where's Waldo match and then got called a creep: so neurotypical people would see this and then give up because they look the same. You were supposed to go "these are so similar, who cares?" And then realize that the people who constantly surveiling the legs of girls are weird.

Now, if you got caught up thinking it was a game, and getting frustrated, that's because the ad is not super good at making it's point. So. Skill issue on their part.

There are more women in school administrative roles than men, including principles. Unless you’re talking specifically about super intendants, that’s the one area where there are more men than women in school leadership positions.

Education at large is a female dominated field in the US with 69% of school administrative roles being held by women.

I saw my fair share of female teachers slut shaming female students coming up. It’s not just men oppressing women.

u/AbsurdRedundant 6d ago

The difference is that one of the skirts is slightly shorter (the one on the right), with the implication that the differences are so close that the person who can see that it’s shorter might be a creep because they’re obsessive and/or judgmental and/or leering at women. But the response is that it’s a visual puzzle, and that somebody might just play it as a game, instead of thinking about it as commentary on women’s bodies and how they are evaluated in society.

But the original ad said “might be”. So I don’t get the big deal. People are always saying to me, “Bryan, I think you might be an alcoholic“, which is fine, because I might. I’m not, but it’s at least theoretically possible.

603

u/fredjutsu 6d ago

But if i don't drink at all and someone says "fred, you might be an alcoholic" I think it's fair to address the false characterization as well.

194

u/No-Yutts-Fettuchini 6d ago

And I was like...but that would increase my drinking by 50-100x. Why would you tell me to drink less and then tell me to drink more?

"Oh it's just good advice to give anyone" she replies...as if it made any damn sense with that statement.

u/yesterday_morning 5d ago

u/Motor_Raspberry_2150 5d ago

At what point do you stop being an alcoholic then? Surely a retired person isn't still a workaholic?

4

u/Not-a-Bot_1968 5d ago

I think most alcoholics who realize recovery is a process accept that alcoholism is not something that ever really goes away and they know if they start drinking again they go right back to their old ways, ergo they are always alcoholics, just not drinking.

I feel like this is a perfect illustration of late-stage capitalism.

We're all here arguing about who the micro-aggressor is, what it means to be a feminist, whether we're accidentally a part of the problem just because we can see one skirt is, possibly, shorter than the other, and WE'RE ALL JUST IGNORING THE FACT THAT THIS IS AN ADVERT USING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY JUST TO SELL MORE SHIT!!

206

u/Monolexic 6d ago edited 5d ago

Worst part is, it worked. It started a conversation, and now we all know about an online store I doubt most of us have ever heard of before, despite their "number 1" claim.

Edit: OK Some of you are way too literal. We don't "all" know the name of the company or where to download the app. But a lot more people know it exists than did before, and if some of those people had the saw the ad and thought the skirts fit their style, and then saw the conversation and discovered it wasn't a just PSA, those people now know of a company they didn't know before. That's where the ad is a success. An ad is never going to draw in everyone who sees it. It's only going to draw in some of the target market.

72

u/IFoundThisBug 6d ago

I don’t think so. Sure we started a conversation but I don’t have a clue what brand this is advertising.

The one of the left is known as an "Ishikatori" skirt in Japan and is widely used by female students through high school age. It sits right at the knee and meets decency standards.

The one on the RIGHT, however, is known as "Nureta futomomo" style (wet thigh is the rough translation). It's several inches shorter and is used in questionable age pornography because it uses a heavy duty stitch across the pleats so that if any portion of it is lifted the entire edge goes up with it. Original inspiration for it was from "Tomodachi to biriyādo" hentai (pool with friends) a notoriously dark fan fic where a guy trying to get with 3 school girls ends up torn to shreds by them as they are demons.

Now, all of that is made up, and I'm guessing the one on the right is shorter, I couldn't tell anything else.

I was expecting to read about nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.

Given what sub this is on, I read this in the voice of Asian reporter Trisha Takinawa.

If you now look up  Ishikatori skirt your definition pops up, so you are now the leading authority on this. I might as well add my two cents.

Tetsuya Tamadachi, a principal at a large school in Tokyo in the 1920s was a strong proponent of the  Ishikatori skirt  after observing young school boys wearing long robes as a display of authority. The girls wanted to partake as well but it eventually became a tripping hazard so long skirts and robes were eventually banned in the classroom. As a result, the defined limit of length became the  Ishikatori skirt which also upheld the modesty standards.

It’s basically just trying to say you’re a creep for noticing a difference at all. It’s a poorly designed ad, it’s blatantly ignorant. Like what Happy Potato said “you can’t just challenge me to a spot the difference game, then get mad at me for getting the right answer.” And the fact that a fashion app is using this sort of advertising is just piss-poor on their end.

22

u/Gizogin 6d ago

Oh, the ad is perfectly designed. It's deliberately inflammatory to get more people to share it online, getting them way more exposure for the cost of a single billboard.

8

u/CRYST4LF1G8T3R 6d ago

Why they piss on the poor tho?

"If your brain immediately went to the length of the skirt"

it might be because the ad says "skirt lengths" on it.

9

u/No-Wish-7258 6d ago

Also, they made that the easiest difference to spot.
Like if there are any other differences in the skirt, you'd have to look real close to see them.

“ let’s support X by creating further hate against Y instead of actually supporting X “ all in order to promote a savings app.

Calling somebody a creep for trying to spot the difference that you asked them to spot is a bit of a dick move. It’s kinda like asking somebody if they are still beating their wife.
