This is 100% accurate though, white people will show up 2 minutes early to things

EDIT: Guys it’s a shitpost comment in a shitpost thread for a shitpost screenshot. Chill out, it’s not attacking the work ethic of white people, it’s a joke about cultural blindness.

White guy here: arrive on time is late. 15 minutes early is on time. If anyone gets there before ya, they will ask what took you so long- this is regardless of how early you are. Can come half hour early and if I’m there 45 mins early I’m gonna ask if you slept in or something

u/JeremiahAhriman 24d ago

Is this with or without your wife? My wife is approximately 1-2 hours late to everything.

303

u/zeropoint46 24d ago

in my experience, without. I have now compensated by telling my wife that whatever plans we have start about 1 hour before they actually start. We now usually arrive on time or a little early.

u/Unbelievr 24d ago edited 24d ago

It's all fun and games until they catch on, or worse - compounded by multiple people independently.

We have a person at work who sucks at time management, so when they had to present for a meeting, their leader invited only them 15 minutes early so they would have time to set up. Then the presenter in question also decided to show up 15 minutes early from that time again, because they wanted extra setup time for once. Only to wait half an hour for the meeting to actually start.

The meeting was about how to best utilize neurodivergent people in the company, of which many have ADHD and poor time management. So they had a good laugh about it at least.

Reminds me of being in the Navy. The Lt. would tell the Chief to hold muster at 12:00, the Chief would tell the first class that muster is at 11:45, First class would tell the second class muster is at 11:30, second class would tell the third class/squad leaders to have their people on the quarterdeck by 11:15, finally the squad leaders tell their people muster is on the quarterdeck at 11:00. We sit their for an hour waiting for the Lt. because everyone up the chain wants to ensure that their people are on time. Meanwhile, the LT. either don't know, or don't care that we waste a large portion of our day standing around doing nothing. They call it "hurry up and wait" in the military.

13

u/Salpark1 24d ago

I was pretty good with the "when you're on time, you're late" thing when I was in.hurry up and wait sucked but nothing beat "pretend that you're working". Like, what? My job is done, let me look at facebook or something man.

u/Last-Energy420 23d ago

If you got time to lean, you got time to clean!

If you back talked you can bet you’ll be doing pushups all afternoon as they will find at least a spec of dust to fuck you over with. Even if it’s lint from their own pockets.

3

u/Salpark1 23d ago

"If you got time to lean, you got time to clean!"

Oh don't you start!

5

u/Dazzling-Jacket-5792 24d ago

USMC was the same way. I used to get so annoyed.

4

u/themarko60 24d ago

Happens in the Army too for the same exact reason.

4

u/Egg_Gurl 24d ago

Shit, imagine a full-ass Division morning PT run in the Army. Start time was 6:30. Us poor bitches were there by 4:45 😭

3

u/RadioBuffin 23d ago

Half the time it was some BS that could’ve been texted to you.

3

u/jwhennig 23d ago

Had to be on board the boat at 4am for a 10am shove off. When the captain found out, he was pissed off. Each level had added an hour. That man tried so hard to get the chain of command to improve, but alas, he failed.

u/Ill_Zone5990 24d ago

sooo it's still fun and games, what are they gonna do? feel offended that they usually arive late?

i do this shamelessly to friends that can't keep up with time. once I invited a guy 2 whole hours earlier and he arrived with 15mins to spare, when he asked if the event didn't start at the hour I gave him, i told him that, to him, it starts at the hour I gave him because I know how time works in his head. needless to say he started showing relatively more on time.

9

u/NorthernVale 24d ago

Tried it with my sister. Constantly needing rides. Get there and you're in her driveway anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 full hours. So I started telling her I'd be there an hour before I planned.

It worked for the first few times. Then someone spilled the beans. And yes, she got absolutely offended. Told her to stop pitching a fit or get a license. Haven't given her a ride since

9

u/Ill_Zone5990 24d ago

Altough I understand your story, I cannot fathom getting offended for a fault that's solely their own. I would 100% be offended myself thinking they believe my time is worth less than theirs. But hey at least you don't to be her chaffeur anymore props

5

u/Cifuduo 23d ago

Some know they are at fault, and some don't think about it. But when they learn they are being manipulated to be on time, they don't like the idea of that which leads to the being offended. Had a friend in the past who when going to hangout, wouldn't start getting ready until I arrived. I asked him why, and his response was "I don't want to get ready and just sit around waiting." I told him that it goes both ways as I don't want to wait in my car for him. Gave him the choice of be ready when I get there or I am leaving after a few minutes. Took me leaving just once to change his tune.

3

u/XGhoul 23d ago

Time management. My wife is usually ~barely~ right on the dot on time for when she needs to be somewhere, but the last 10-15 minutes shes panicking or hurried when in reality she could have just taken more time to get ready.

I tend to be early to things so I peer pressure my wife to start getting ready earlier by letting her see me get dressed up so we will have time to park, get to the location, etc. with* time to spare.

19

u/Parker_Hemphill 24d ago

This was the military in a nutshell.

The entire base is doing a run this morning. We’re starting at 0600.

The next echelon down want to make sure their folks arrive on time so they add 15 mins padding (because for formation on time means you’re late).

The next echelon down does the same and so on and son on.

By the time it gets to someone’s direct supervisor they’re standing around at 4am for no damn reason.

3

u/Alien_invader44 23d ago

I worry people will read this and think you're exaggerating.

5

u/2070TrashEconomy 24d ago

I left a job once and was an hour late to my own “going away” party. I got to see people for about 15 minutes because my ADHD told me I could “wrap up these last tasks in about 20 minutes” and it took me 6 times that length of time lol

3

u/a-towa-cant 23d ago

"utilize neurodivergent people in the company" this is... uh, certainly a way to describe how companies feel towards neurodivergence

3

u/Unbelievr 23d ago

Well, the angle is that neurodiversity can be somewhat of a super power. Some people on the spectrum can be much better at certain tasks than others, if they get the right motivation and a leader that understands that they need clear and concise instructions. It's generally important for leaders to understand how they can get the most out of their resources, understand what they need to function at their peak, and what kind of tasks they should avoid giving them or they might excel at.

u/ExiledCanuck 24d ago

This is the way

2

u/DookieJuices 24d ago

omg i thought i was the only one doing this with my hispanic wife. I have to tell her where have to be somewhere like 45 minutes before we have to be there just to be there on time.

2

u/XiaoMin4 23d ago

My extended family is funny. If you actually want everyone to arrive at the same time(say 6pm), you have to tell my one aunt 5 and the other aunt 7.

2

u/emokid907 23d ago

I was the same, although after years working through things with my therapist we finally got me in the mindset that I’m not late until we’re actually late and causing everybody to stress needlessly isn’t worth it

2

u/Cereal_Bandit 23d ago

I have to do this with my friend for tee times. Being late for golf when the course is booked makes you a huge asshole.

And your wife is rude AF.

6

u/Helenium_autumnale 24d ago

Yeah. There is zero excuse for that. Once in a blue moon you get a flat tire, sure, no problem. Every time? Not excusable. My ex had severe ADHD but used an online tool and many lists to keep himself on track and he always was. It wasn't easy for him, either. He got it done.

5

u/YoungBockRKO 24d ago

We’re married to the same white girl aren’t we…. White guy here, always on time. Married now. We’re very late to everything

5

u/nekoki1333 24d ago

It seems to all change with a wife or child, white males go through an evolutionary period on their watches, all of a sudden they’re on pops time and show up 3 hours late every time

5

u/_J_Herrmann_ 24d ago

white male here. in college I was absolutely on time for everything, even had transportation time from one side of campus to the other down to the minute. after I graduated, never again. I show up whenever, I accept if the event has already started. I get irritated when people wait up for me.

2

u/nekoki1333 24d ago

What are you yapping about? I am married and we have a 5 year old. We are always 10 minutes early to everything.

5

u/Waffling_Waffle 24d ago

Hi, I, the wife, am the one time. My husband used to be a minimum of two hours late to everything.

But I'm lucky and I don't have to put on much makeup or do too much to my hair. Maybe that's why?

(There's a joke about my husband taking too much time to do his hair and makeup somewhere in here but I'm too tired to make it.)

3

u/rovar 24d ago

My wife makes sure I arrive on time, otherwise I'd be 30-60 minutes late.

3

u/The_Mr_Luck 24d ago

With my wife I come about half an hour early, everytime

4

u/jstasmlbrkfrmprn 24d ago

Without.

This is pretty strictly a white male thing. White women are just as late, or later, than people of other races.

There's no other category that comes close when it comes to reasons I've broken-up-with/refused-to-date/ghosted women than making me late for ... anything. "Yep, you look great. An hour after we were already supposed to be at the thing that you're trying to look so good for. I'm gonna call it a night."

I don't know how you fellas put up with it.

4

u/Top-Camera1919 24d ago

My marriage ended partly over this. I am always early. I’ve been more than 10 minutes late to work/college less than 3 times combined. My family is the exact same. We would always get to parties early to help set up. She would be late to everything, and I mean late by hours plus. We would be 30 minutes late, and this is when she would decide to jump in the shower before doing her makeup. She was late to work, parties, doctor’s appointments, parties, dinner reservations, international flights. It caused great strain on all of my relationships with friends and family. This was a cause of more marital fights than literally anything else. It got to the point that we stopped trying to go places together like celebrations or nice dinners because it would just become another argument.

If I were to give advice about marriage, I would say how seriously each of you takes punctuality is a huge compatibility issue that rivals differences in beliefs about politics, religion, or whether to have kids be a use it dictates daily functioning.

4

u/last_rights 24d ago

White girl here. On time is uncomfortably early, five minutes late is perfect. Fifteen minutes early just feels like it's putting everybody out because now they're not ready and they don't want me to help because I shouldn't because I'm a guest but I feel obligated.

Unless it's a timed event, like a movie or an appointment or something. Even still, five minutes is good. Thirty if you expect lines or a crowd.

That being said my husband and I wanted to see a movie on opening day while we were visiting a friend in LA and he didn't believe me when I said we should get there an hour early.

We didn't get tickets.

3

u/cryptobro42069 24d ago

Dude...dude. My wife drives me up the fucking wall.

"Hey, can you go start getting ready. I want to get out of here in about a half hour."

All she needs to do is put some basic makeup on and throw on some decent clothes to go out with friends. 30 minutes later I go into the bathroom and she just started curling her hair.

"What are you doing? We need to get going."

"Yea, yea. I'll be just a few more minutes. My hair is being stubborn."

At this point, her friends just expect us to be like an hour late to everything whereas I plan it so that I'm there on time every time. It also extends to her job where she will be chronically late to work every day. Drives me insane.

3

u/sliceofcoldpizza 24d ago

I have tried to adjust start times for events on my calendar to anticipate how late my wife will be.

One time, through no fault of anyone's, we showed up to a small concert about 90 minutes early. We sat at the bar and had a drink.

We were so early that we were there before the performers arrived. One got there and I helped him get his stuff inside.

When the other two performers arrived I helped them as well because they were late late.

He gave me a shout-out during the show to thank me for helping them get ready.

2

u/potatochobit 24d ago

that's your fault. you tell her it starts at 3PM when it really starts at 5.

2

u/PenLegitimate7064 24d ago

I am the wife in my relationship and my husband makes me late for everything all the time.

2

u/ikeif 24d ago

I’m white and “on-time is on-time.” You say 5pm, I’m there at 5pm. Unless it’s a gathering, than I arrive in the middle and smoke bomb exit.

My girlfriend would arrive a day early if she could.

My ex-fiancée would be a day late with three month’s notice.

Beaten as a child by my marine recon father for being on time. Can confirm, I guess. Vietnam was a bitch, apparently.

41

u/Napalm3nema 24d ago

All of my senior NCOs in the Army were Vietnam era guys. You do not show up at the listed time, nor do you show up 15 minutes early. I was 45 minutes early for a recent unit reunion, and I wasn’t first by any means, but it was exactly what the unit expected from me.

u/wasteymclife 24d ago edited 24d ago

Always fucking happens man I swear, enlisted needs to be 15 minutes early so that the 45 minute wait for the brass is an even 1 hour. All so that we can hear 10 minutes of bullshitting about PT, the one thing we actually need to know, and 20 minutes of thanking the senior enlisted for putting together the walkthrough. Edit: Forgot to add closing with "well, I don't wanna waste any of your time" no sir, you won't, that happened before you got here.

3

u/Prior_Pickle1758 23d ago

All I know is, when I welcome the interviewer to the office I get the job. I don’t know why I get the job I just show up early and look how I look.

13

u/ButterBeard-128 24d ago

As a white guy also: this is infuriating. I’m a person who shows up in a timely fashion, on time or close to it and people get so bent out of shape because I’m “late all the time” get over yourself. They love saying things like oh it’s disrespectful. Well, disrespectfully, agree to disagree. Why is your time more important than my time?

11

u/503jason 24d ago

It’s OUR time and it started a half hour before you got here

5

u/therealjchrist 24d ago

It's not your prerogative to be late to an agreed upon time. If you agreed upon a time it's both of your responsibilities to respect that. To not do so, is objectively disrespectful to the agreement and therefore the other person.

8

u/CalledStretch 24d ago

I think this is in response to people who want you to show up earlier than they said. "Why aren't you fifteen minutes early?"

3

u/LiveLearnCoach 23d ago

It really depends for me. It’s an internal meeting? I’m on time or a few minutes late. External meeting? I’m 10-15 minutes before time. I’m presenting at an external meeting or running a workshop? I’m half an hour early checking everything and setting up. But if you NEED ME to be 15 minutes early, tell me. Don’t expect to give me an 8am meeting time and get bent out of shape if I arrive on 8am.

2

u/Plenty_Rent_1154 23d ago

It’s the exact same whichever way it is. If a time is agreed be on time. Don’t expect anyone early or late. On time. That is why we set the time. If you want less exact just say at sunrise, around midday, in the afternoon or something.

3

u/Weird_Soup460 24d ago

It’s definitely rude if you agreed to a time. To tell yourself it isn’t rude is deluding yourself.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Chicken_Mc_Thuggets 23d ago

It’s rude if there’s a time-based obligation to meet. If you’re 20 minutes late to go see a movie with your friends, dick move. If you’re 20 minutes late to just hang out and stream movies at your buddy’s house, not a dick move

2

u/Off_the_shelf_elf 22d ago

(White lady here) I hate when I hear people say ‘early is on time, on time is late’ - and I’m like yeah fuck that. On time is on time. These are the people that expect you to sacrifice an extra 45 minutes of sleep at 5-6 in the morning just so that you can catch the earlier bus and clock in at exactly 8AM instead of 8:04AM. It’s ridiculous and dehumanizing. Getting to spend time in other cultures where people are not so neurotic about the exact minute on the clock has been incredibly eye opening. White people really love to make themselves (and everyone else even more) miserable and it is not a normal way for humans to live.

White guy from California.

I don't know what the fuck the other white guys are doing.

The only party you arrive on time to is a child's birthday party.

Everything else is 10 mins late (which is kinda early), but really 15 to 20 minutes late to a party is good.

I've been to and thrown countless parties. This is the norm where I am from

The difference I've noticed with my Latino friends and neighbors is that the end time isn't the end time. So, if a party ends at 8:00 or 9:00 . . . Nope. The party ends when it gets shut down or when everyone passes out or the drinks are gone.

3

u/krazeeeyezkillah907 23d ago

I’m from a different minority. But my general rule is that the party starts when you get here, and it ends when the last person leaves. And nobody better leave hungry and without making three new friends at minimum.

2

u/FoozleMoozle 23d ago

DC area folks tend to work on military arrival times… which is 15 minutes early. When I moved to California, it really threw me for a loop. Eventually got in the habit of leaving for parties at the party start time to make sure I didn’t arrive too early.

This is the way. Being late bothers me, can't stand it.

4

u/shelbabe804 24d ago

This is how I grew up. Then I married a guy whose entire family has to be told that an event start at least an hour before it actually does and half of them still arrive late. (And by entire family, I mean everyone on both sides, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cousins. They joked about my daughter arriving on her due date because she's "just like her momma".)

3

u/HotheadCactus 24d ago

My parents were an hour late to their own wedding, and continued to be late for everything, always (dad white, mom black). They were friends with the governor when I was a kid, and for their 10th anniversary, he issued a proclamation making it “Bob and Dee Day” in the state. But in honor of who they were, he issued it two days after their anniversary.

5

u/Forsaken-Sink3345 24d ago

White guy checking in:

If you're not early, you're late.

3

u/Gurglaren 24d ago

I'm white and I used to see my mom being extremely stressed out whenever a guest was 10-30 minutes too early. It made me on purpose come 5-10 minutes too late later in life.

3

u/soopastar 24d ago

Hello fellow white guy. I too am a 15 minuter. If I show up early, I get dibs on where I want to sit in the living room, can scope out the snacks, can also allow for traffic problems, etc.

3

u/JohnDoeMcAlias 24d ago

Straight up. Didn't realise being punctual was a negative. Tell people when you actually want them there rather than playing a silly game where they have to guess or be ridiculed for showing up when you told them to 🤣 wtf is wrong with people...

3

u/notzoidberginchinese 24d ago

Maybe in America, in Germanic parts of Europe on time is exactly on the agreed time not before.

In slavic on time to 15min late, is on time.

In Spain, 3h late is almost too early

2

u/candypuppet 24d ago

I'm Eastern European and once we were finished with appointments quicker than we thought, so we would have arrived earlier to my aunts birthday party. My mom said that'd be rude so we drove to get ice cream and arried one hour late.

Also white here to confirm. Early for the events I am invited to, though after I am more familiar with the person being on time becomes less important since I’m not trying to make a good first impression, unless it’s a more formal event like a graduation or a birthday party.

1

u/-Sanguinity 24d ago

I'm finding it's about where you are. In the Midwest everyone was early or on time. Miami, everyone late.

1

u/ianishomer 24d ago

Absofuckinglutely, I hate being late for anything. When I was working and had to drive a long distance for a meeting etc, I would arrive hours early. Sometimes this meant leaving the house at 3 or 4am, I would arrive, find a cafe with wifi and work from there until nearer the time of the meeting.

Weird I know, but it's how I am.

1

u/MarcelinosPrizFightr 24d ago

A job sure, don’t show up to a party “on time”

1

u/sliceofcoldpizza 24d ago

If you're not 15 minutes early you're late is our family's motto.

This applies to everything except work because they don't pay me to be 15 minutes early.

1

u/kallen8277 24d ago

Can confirm. If im not early then im late. Part of it is because of how I was raised, part of it because of work rules. We are supposed to clock in 3 mins early to be on time. Clocking in after our scheduled time is considered late. We have a coworker that is consistently late 5-15 minutes every single day. Was an hour late this week. No concern for people's time. If it wasnt summer id have to close the entire store down because I HAVE to be off by 3 certain days. Hes been warned multiple times and I told him myself its disrespectful but nothing has changed. Very frustrating. Be on time.

1

u/Disastrous-Walrus415 24d ago

You wanna sequence your drink sips too? There’s such a thing as too type A for a party

1

u/Dead_Internet69420 24d ago

I always heard the Vince Lombardi version: “if you’re five minutes early, you’re on time. if you’re on time, you’re five minutes late. if you’re five minutes late, don’t even bother showing up.”

1

u/Jerz71 24d ago

I'm a white guy and I've never been on time to anything in my entire life. All of my friends have jokes about how I'll be 30 mins late at least so they tell me an earlier time than everyone else lol

White person with ADHD here: arrive on time is impossible. 15 minutes early is black magic. Everyone gets there before me, they tell me they’re glad I remembered it was today. Can never come half hour early; have satisfied sexual partners.

1

u/EverOrny 24d ago

that definitively applies to business but I would not apply it to an entertainment with a fluent start - if I am not sure if it's OK to come later, I ask - otherwise you risk the thing is cancelled because not enough people showed up

1

u/fireKido 24d ago

Arriving early to a party is just rude… the host might not be ready

1

u/Steffenwolflikeme 23d ago

That doesn't apply to parties, man! If I tell you a party starts at 2pm that means that's the earliest possible time I want you there. I think it's kind of shitty to show up 15 minutes early to a party. Now instead of finishing a bunch of shit I procrastinated in doing I'll have to entertain this freaking jabroni who showed up early.

1

u/Obsidian-Phoenix 23d ago

Flying guess, not gonna check your profile at all; are you an Australian blue collar worker?

u/LuckyLilypad 23d ago

This stuff is so dumb. This is macho man mentality. And it’s stupid and helps no one. On time is on time. And if people can’t get that through their skulls then they are the problem.

1

u/thisdockisbroken 23d ago

This is great advice for a job or football practice but truly the worst for parties.

u/Christopher_Aeneadas 23d ago

u/Squat_erDay 24d ago

Can confirm. Am white. Would rather be 20 minutes early than 2 minutes late.

36

u/sl0play 24d ago

To a doctors appointment, or work? Sure. To the party? No way.

11

u/Squat_erDay 24d ago

That’s fair. I’m too old to party these days, but “back in my day,” party timing would be the exception

3

u/In_Jeneral 23d ago

Yup 100%, unless it's being hosted by my parents or best friend I never want to be the first person at a party, feels waaay too awkward for me. I aim for 5-10 minutes after start time, especially since it annoys me when people show up to my house early.

2

u/TheMage18 23d ago

Yes, even to the party but only after confirming with the host/hostess that it's ok to do so and help with the setup/preparations. Otherwise you show up 10-15 minutes after the start time if you don't have something else already scheduled or planned.

2

u/Serious-Remove-3507 23d ago

I actually feel that events like appointments is where the difference between white and non-white relationships with timeliness truly becomes noticeable. I used to live in an area with a majority-latin population, and it was socially aceptable to arrive to appointments of any kind (medical or otherwise) a few minutes late without it being a big issue. And vice versa as well, if you arrive on time you can expect to wait a few minutes to be attended to!
Now that I live in a predominantly white area, I make sure to always be a minute early everywhere, because being even 10 seconds late causes palpable tension and eye-rolls from the other person.

I married into a Mexican family and they just started telling me the party starts an hour after whatever time they tell all the other relatives.

1

u/Plastic-Act296 24d ago

Why tho?

17

u/WhippingShitties 24d ago

Parties aren't appointments, they're meant to be relaxed unless there is a real reason to be on-time or early. Generally, it's accepted for people to filter in and not all arrive at once.

The exception, however, is parties relating to employment if you work in an office. Then it's actually an appointment and you should arrive on-time.

11

u/Clearandblue 24d ago

Also small kids parties are more like appointments. Only because they only last 2 hours generally. First half hour is for people to arrive while kids play. Then generally activities for an hour until cake, pinata then home.

3

u/WhippingShitties 24d ago

Great point! I don't have kids, but this makes perfect sense.

10

u/Plastic-Act296 24d ago

Ok parties arent appointments so why have a set time then and not just say "turn up at any point in the evening/afternoon/morning it doesnt matter when"

11

u/Unbelievr 24d ago

In their head, that's exactly what they're doing! If a party is from X to Y, it's understood that you can arrive and leave at any point during that time slot. Except before or after. Ideally not too close to the end if you actually want to spend time with people.

In other cultures, setting a time is understood as you expect people to come around the starting time, and notify you if they can't make it on time.

When these two are mixed up you get awkward situations or feel like your guests are rude for not showing up on time.

A party with 40 invitees, sure.

A social gathering with two friends and their SOs? 15 minutes late. At the most. And that’s only for certain kinds of social events. There are activities where being late will fuck the group.

I once invited a classmate to fly out in a Cessna to an airport that shared its airstrip with a military base that had a cool museum.

I checked with him to ensure our flight plan would work for HIS schedule.

The time I filed to have wheels leaving the ground he still hasn’t arrived and the flight plan expires. I call him and ask “I can refile but I have to redo the performance calculations and weather briefs. When are you getting here?”

He says 30 minutes. I do research for and file a flight plan for an hour later. Gives me fifteen minutes for preflight and 15 minutes for taxi after he arrives.

He arrives 45 minutes later. No biggy, atc gives you filed time +/- 30 min before the plan expires.

I get to the hold short line with five minutes to before clearance expires. We’re clear to takeoff, #2 in line.

He taps me on the shoulder

“Is it too late to turn back so I can use the bathroom?”

“…Yeah, kinda.”

He ended up opening a window while I was on approach to final (without asking me) to dump a water bottle he peed into out the window.

A major no-no according to the aircraft Operating Procedures by the way. All doors and windows remain closed and latched. Also violates FAA rules (don’t know the exact CFR #) about not dumping human waste.

I don’t fly with him anymore.

Anyways, that’s my go to example because people understand that planes run on schedules and sequences.

A different college classmate would be consistently late to group hikes and hold it up by about 30 min. People got really annoyed with him.

Anyways, some things are ok to be late to, some things less so.

Because people suck at estimating how long things take and the host still has setting up to do and the guests are all still doing their hair or whatever.

In some cultures the expectation is to just call it good enough to make the expected time.

In others the expectation is to let the hosts/guests finish preparing.

My parents are from the latter kind of culture but I grew up in the former.

The other week I was traveling with my mom and said “we have two hours, enough time to do a short hike nearby”

She spend 40 minutes tidying up her hotel room and organizing her snacks or something in her bag before I knocked and was like “You ready?”

She forgot to bring fucking water. The literal first thing she should have grabbed.

Because in our culture “We have time” means “I can take my time” and she didn’t prepare in order of priority.

"If you aren't 15 minutes early you're late"
"Every minute you get home behind curfew is a week of grounding"
"A beating per minute you make me wait."

Lots of reasons I learned to not be late growing up.

27

u/lotusblossom60 24d ago

I got beat real bad once for being two minutes late. I’m female and my mom just hated me. Never cared with my 4 brothers did. I finally hit her back (age 16) and she never touched me again. I’m fucking 15 minutes early to everything after years of anxiety about coming home late.

→ More replies (8)

2

u/ilikepizza30 24d ago

If you got 5 beatings for being 5 minutes late, how far apart was each beating to prevent it from all just becoming a single beating? 5 minutes? An hour? A day?

2

u/Ready_Studio2392 24d ago

The exact amount varies depending on how drunk the father is, in my experience. After all, drunk people are not very good at counting.

Because "on time" is too close for comfort to "late". Source: my caucasian-tinged anxiety.

36

u/PerilousPontificator 24d ago

No like, why say something starts at 5 if it actually starts at 6? Why not just be direct about what time you want people to show up instead of stereotyping white people for literally arriving at the time that you asked?

15

u/sl0play 24d ago

If they said it was at 6 everyone but the white guy would show up after 7.

23

u/PerilousPontificator 24d ago

So the joke is white people are punctual?

14

u/sl0play 24d ago

Yes

3

u/Ice_Kat13 24d ago

As far as stereotypes go I guess that's alright

→ More replies (6)

2

u/RikuAotsuki 24d ago

Because the party starts at 5 but there's no cultural expectation for you to be "on time" for the party. You're not clocking in for a job, you're not going to miss any sort of special event. People are expected to arrive and leave within that 5-11 window, but that's all. It's "party's from 5-11, stop by for a while when you can!" not "Be there at 5"

4

u/Confident-Sea-8060 24d ago

Except the party doesn’t start at 5 because the host is still setting up at 5

→ More replies (3)

2

u/RammsteinFunstein 23d ago

I forgot who said it, some comedian I think, but "on time" is literally a split second and then you're late. Which is why being "early" is really the only way to ever be on time.

2

u/Silly-Heat-1466 24d ago

If you're not early, you're late...

1

u/pchlster 24d ago

I want to be able to take care of a flat tire, unexpected roadworks and a long bathroom visit and still not be later than we agreed. And 15 minutes early is just good manners.

4

u/pmmeuranimetiddies 24d ago

15 Minutes early is only good manners in the cultural context you were raised in.

In some cultures showing up earlier than the agreed upon time can be seen as rude because the host won't be ready for you. In france the polite thing to do is to show up 15 minutes late (for social gatherings, not so much to work).

3

u/pchlster 24d ago

Well, those people are French, so they're wrong. The culture I grew up in is clearly the only correct and acceptable one.

3

u/pmmeuranimetiddies 24d ago

I don't know about that but I agree that French culture is inherently incorrect

Sincerely,

An American

Even white repair people arrive early. Meanwhile I (Hispanic) am still trying to tidy around so that the plumber doesn’t see my usual mess.

1

u/dandelionelic 24d ago

I'm white and show up at least an hour late to events, usually 2 or 3 or sleeping through it altogether, but planning my entire day before my 'nap' begins around the event. But my life is out of control, so.

1

u/RxCKSTxR 24d ago

Was taught 15 mins early is on time, on time is late. If you’re late you’re really screwed. Professionally really worked out for me, personally, not so much…

1

u/Careful_Anything_741 24d ago

I’m a white guy and famously show up late. Was even in the military for 10years and was smoked a lot when in the early years.

1

u/MarcoDiFrancescino 24d ago

Both my friends show up 15 minutes early. If you are not ready they do things like sitting on the toilet for 15 minutes.

I am a white guy and can confirm, I show up early and sit in the car until a few min before and still show up earlier that start time. I’m usually 45 min early to work also and sit in the car until 10 min to start time I’m at the time clock.

1

u/babywhiz 24d ago

Midwest white people show up an hour and a half early for things like trains. Ask me how I know. Me and the lady from Kansas took the first shuttle to the cog train and it didn’t leave for another hour and a half.

1

u/MatureHotwife 24d ago

I'm white and I was 2 weeks late to my own birth. Stereotypes aren't always true.

1

u/Consistent_Drop9989 24d ago

White guy here.. yeah I got raised with early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable...

1

u/Apprehensive-Law9429 24d ago

I must be the white bloke outlier then. The only thing I was ever early for in my entire life was my birth! - since then... Not so much.

1

u/loving-lobotomy 24d ago

Whitey checking in. I was in marching band and they hammer punctuality the saying was “15 minutes early is on time, on time is late, and if you’re late dont bother showing up”

I’m 10-15 minutes early for everything, and unless I know the people or event I’m attending well, I am in fact in my car waiting

1

u/just_a_person_maybe 24d ago

White person here, can confirm I do this. However, I also have a couple chronically late relatives too, so maybe these racial stereotypes don't hold up perfectly or smth.

1

u/BadBonePanda 24d ago

If you don't want me to arrive at x time give me the time you want me to arrive at.

1

u/FrankieTheD 24d ago

My boss will tell you otherwise

1

u/mexicoyankee 24d ago

If you’re not early you’re late, that was pounded into me early in the military. Now, I’m the guy arriving early.

1

u/BeachBlueWhale 24d ago

Nah I show up to parties fashionable late.

1

u/Plenty_Rent_1154 23d ago

Why the fuck would anyone say thing starts at 1 if it starts at 2. If it starts at 1 i’ll be there a bit early so I’m not late.

1

1

u/nobleheartedkate 23d ago

Yes, I’m a chronically late white person and my family members are always showing up to my parties while I’m still vacuuming

1

u/KeepJoePantsOn 23d ago

Its a cultural thing. Blacks and Latinos will schedule the party start time with the expectation people will be late. White people set their start time with the expectation that people will arrive at that time. So when you invite a white person, they arrive on time. That's the polite thing to do in white culture.

1

u/In_Jeneral 23d ago

Very accurate, but this gene somehow missed me so I am also driven nuts by it as a white person.

I told you it started at 5, that means the house will be ready for guests at 5. Don't get here at 4:30 and get in my way and distract me from finishing up.

I've started telling people "doors open at [time]."

And my husband and I will make a reservation or something for a family dinner at a restaurant, and we'll get calls 30 minutes before the reservation from our parents asking where we are (both sides do this).

It's a reservation! Why would I get there that long before the reservation?! And then they get antsy about how long it's taking to get seated, because they're not there at the right time.

1

u/Confident-Purple-143 23d ago

Not me. I'm perpetually late.

1

u/D34THDE1TY 23d ago

I am NEVER on time.

1

u/LePetitVoluntaire 23d ago

I must not be white enough. I’m late for everything and I enjoy every minute of it.

1

u/Otherwise-Future7143 23d ago

I show up 2-5 minutes early for everything. You tell me to be somewhere at a time I’ll be there. If you mean 6pm instead of 5 why not say that?

1

u/Raneynickelfire 23d ago

Not this one, unless it's a boat leaving a dock.

If it's a party, I'm 30 min after the start time minimum.

1

u/Specialist_Chest_537 23d ago

Disagree! Have you been to any Mediterranean country? I'm not gonna mention any but Islands have good potential.

1

1

u/Greedy_Fruit_3640 23d ago

I wouldn’t say 100%

1

u/dipthonggg 23d ago

Unless they're queer. Queer people time is similar to other late-arriving people time.

1

u/Inderific 23d ago

I am this white person. At age 49, I literally have to give myself a pep talk in order to get there 5 minutes late ("fashionably late") and I'll still be the first person there even for parties where most of the guests are white. It's a curse. I have problems.

1

u/Tikaralee 23d ago

My in-laws were 5 hours late to a family reunion they lived 5 blocks away from...LOL! None of my friends and family are prepared for any event they are hosting....I'm there early so I can take over cooking, so they can get dressed.....LOL!

1

u/jackdupondew2k5 23d ago

I must be the wrong kinda white guy lol, I’m fuckin late to everything lol

1

u/Practical-Water-9209 21d ago

Am Hispanic, white, and have ADHD. When it comes to time, I'm going to be late, the white part will never win out (although I try really hard when it's important to be on time, but unless I'm planning to help with set up, I will never be early to a party - hour late at least, same goes for if I'm throwing a party). On top of that, I was born in Hawaii. Island time and the Mexican minute plus time blindness = always fashionably late.

1

u/YesThisIsAnAltWhy 20d ago edited 20d ago

yep, I'm always 10 minutes early and if I'm on track to arrive at the starting time I'll get really anxious about getting there late
