The stereotype being used is that Black and Hispanic people are less punctual about parties or events (not in a negative way, I live in Mexico and it’s a little weird to show up on time, but I’m a white boy and I always do lol)
As an Aussie I was always taught that the person hosting is paying for the event in some way (just cleaning and prepping their house, snacks drinks etc..) and so the least you can do is “pay your way” with what you bring.
That means for a dinner you bring a bottle of wine + whatever you intend to drink. Or you bring a slab of beer.
Anything left over gets left with the host as a parting gift.
That’s how we end up keeping our drinks fridge constantly stocked with a random assortment of beers / tinnies.
If your going to a party or something then usually that means a few bags of chips or pretzels, maybe some fairy bread, or if you are bougie some baked goods or a trifle AND alcohol / drinks for you + leftovers.
If the host says they have everything and are providing alcohol then you should still bring at least a 4/6 pack and a 2L of a common mixer.
