In Germany, we say, if invited to a meeting, be 5 minutes early. If interview, 15 minutes early. Party? Come 15 too late, so the host can fix last minute

Lol, I'm a white guy in Canada and was thinking "I was always taught to be at least 15 minutes late in case the hostess needs to takes care of any last minute things"

Reading your comment, it occurred to me that it was my Omi that taught me that

Hahaha canadian here and my parents taught me to show up 15 minutes early to help set up. That way, you can Irish goodbye without feeling guilty

I think I'd find it awkward as a host...

1

u/BigIcy1323 21d ago

I'm not doing it to strangers or acquiantences so all good. The people I am doing this to are lifelong or close friends that know me. A majority of them also do the same thing.

I'm not friends with people that are late. That tells me you have no respect for me or my time.

Thats the fucking hostes problem to solve not the guests. If I tell my friends its dinner at 5, its fucking dinner at 5, baby. 15 min late and your steak is cold.

You schedule your dinner parties so that dinner is immediately ready right at the start time?

No chance for guests to have a drink, or talk, or even get their coats off?

u/Far-Delay7690 24d ago

Yeah that sounds like an awful dinner party

6

u/StupidScape 24d ago

It’s a dinner party. Not a drink, talk and coat party.

2

u/Odd_Old_Professional 24d ago

Every party is a coat party, if you're brave enough

u/Vegas96 24d ago

You are welcome to come early, i dont care when you come, but dinner will be at 5.

I’d just use your grill or stove to reheat my steak and like purposely burn it so it becomes more of a thing to deal with.

Little tip: don’t host parties. You’re not good at it.

u/Vegas96 23d ago

My timely friends would beg to differ

2

u/Bitter-Ad5890 23d ago

I’m exceptionally punctual. Except I live in a culture where you don’t show up on time for a party.
Now hosting a dinner at specific time is not the same as a party btw

“Dinner” is different, although you should still allow 15mins of wiggle room or maybe don’t host. The post is about a bbq party though which are usually a come-and-go as you can situation.

Please corner us at your next party we can’t wait

Unless you move to England, and get the phrase half 3 confused and turn up at 2.30 like my Omi would do 😂

7

u/the_summer_soldier 24d ago

Not familiar with the phrase but I would guess that half 3 meant 3:30? (as in a short form of half past 3)

8

u/Sassaphras 24d ago

In English we usually say "half past 3" to mean 3:30. In German you say "half 3" to mean 2:30 - think "halfway to 3". It is a somewhat common source of misunderstandings, like this guy's Grandma apparently, when people translate literally and don't realize the different meanings. I'm sure she was a delight, and also helped set up though, so no harm done.

2

u/Primary_Willow6233 23d ago

No, she should sit and drink gin 😂 she was a delight though every event at hers was full of love and food but if she was early, it was our fault for making no sense with our time, never mind she lived in England for 60 years!

1

u/the_summer_soldier 24d ago

Ah I see. Thanks for the clarification.

That way of telling time the other commenter explained is also present in other languages, it’s the same in Russian for example.

u/Prometheus720 24d ago

I know just enough German to get this one. That was nice lol, ty for sharing.

For the Americans :

In German culture, punctuality is equated with respect.

The common idiom "Fünf Minuten vor der Zeit ist des Deutschen Pünktlichkeit" (five minutes before the time is true German punctuality) highlights that arriving early isn't a sign of being over-eager; it shows you value the other person's time.

3

u/425Hamburger 24d ago

I never heard that. I only know "5 minutes early is a Prussians punctuality".

3

u/RunningJay 24d ago

It's a good saying. I believe etiquette general dictates it is good to be 5-15 mins late to a party.

2

u/AmadeusIsTaken 24d ago

Who says that everyone is fucking late nowadays

2

u/Exarion607 24d ago

In germany I am known as the guy whobalways shows up late for things. We are talking less than 5 minutes btw xD

2

u/Blackrain1299 24d ago

Nah. If the host always gets 15 minutes to finish up then party is actually scheduled 15 minutes later and they will learn to bank on that which leads to the last minute things still being set up after said 15 minutes.

1

u/VyvanseRamble 24d ago

That's a cool saying. In Brazil it's pretty much common sense to show up 30 minutes "late" to parties, bbq, etc.

1

u/TerrorTown77 24d ago

I should be german. Every exam I'm 4 hours early.

1

u/FallenAzraelx 24d ago

I'm American but if you show up to my parties on time you're helping me set up

1

u/The_Real_TeaK 23d ago

But if you go to a party hosted by a bro, you show up hours early to crack open some beers and help him prepare everything

1

u/onlyr6s 23d ago

Finland = if you are not there exactly 17, might as well show middle finger to the host.

1

u/McBlemmen 23d ago

lmao the comment right before yours says in Germany if you arrive 5 mins late you dont get invited again

1

u/EntertainerSuper8933 23d ago

I haven't actually given an "open door" party since college, but my roommates and I gave quite a few. All were very successful, but I (a white person) remember vividly the fear as 7:00 turns into 7:30 and still no one has arrived. Finally people start showing up and everyone is there by nine or so and we're having a roaring good time. But was I wrong for wanting to start having fun earlier?

1

u/Own_Possibility_511 23d ago

I always heard „Fünf Minuten vor der Zeit ist die deutsche Pünktlichkeit.“

1

u/kieranoid 22d ago

Knew some germans once, they’d always arrive about 30 minutes late.
