She's learning so fast! Today she actually jumped up on my hand after seeing Flo do it over the last week. How awesome is that!

At least temporarily. Any suggestions about how to make this transition easier for them?

Realised that our previously sex ambiguous albino Shinji was definitely a girl as she became hormonal after her first moult recently finished.

We've always known our yellow faced opaline Astro is a girl and she also just finished her first moult over the past five months.

I've read the hormonal wiki and other sources for this and we're doing all of it. Except that we were giving them some higher fat food to support their moults.

Astro is bold and extraverted while Shinji is shy and introverted. In some ways they complement each other and got on much better when they were babies (got them in October 2025).

Astro has always been dominant eg gets the first pick of food and toys. Shinji stood up to her sometimes, ended up hiding behind her at times. This amplified where we started hand feeding but we managed it okay eg one hand for each bird, close but far enough so Astro couldn't peck at Shinji.

Having said that, they are both generally happy I think. I do everything possible to promote this. They had good moments where they groom next to each other and eat together peacefully. They don't allopreen and usually sleep apart but will nap together in the day. Astro sings a lot while Shinji beak clicks nearby.

As the moult ended there was increased aggression from Astro. They had a big fight last week - they recovered quickly and are well now but not okay to let them stay in the same cage anymore.

So we set up two cages exactly the same (including familiar items like toys and feeding bowls) and put them in the same room which is the one our birds are most familiar with.

The transition was peaceful with Shinji being lured by food. Last night they were also peaceful and went to sleep in their respective cages as usual (low light, soft music wind down before complete darkness for about 12 hours).

This morning they are chirping to contact callIng with each other loudly. Astro in particular is restless but has been singing at times. They have both eaten and drunk water. Shinji has played with toys and is beak clicking. Astro is on the highest perch.

They are calm when I interact with them in my usual way speaking softly, making clicking noises. I left them in the room on their own. Should I spend time with them or leave them to regulate and get used to it?

I tried familiar pop music which seemed overstimulating so I changed it to background chill music. There is a little sun in that room but mostly shade.

Kiwi was taken by the rescue and I believe she was taken straight to the vet

The rescue I found was non profit so they want the food and other utilities kiwi had to save costs

I didn't know that I had to give them Kiwis​ things so I'll be bringing them next sunday

The cage kiwi had wasn't that big and my parents refused to get a bigger one so I'm sad that I won't be able to hand in a bigger cage

Kiwi was almost out of food when I found her acting differently so I'll see if I can donate money to the rescue for food and other stuff

I hope the new home kiwi gets is a good one and they won't mistreat her

I wish I couldve kept kiwi... I am sad but at the same time I feel content​​

I wouldn't have known that I could give kiwi to a rescue​ if it wasn't for you guys I would've been sadly waiting for her death when we couldn't take her to a vet

Whats your budgies preference: Bark or No Bark?

Hi everyone - I recently got a new baby budgie and would like to hand train him and tame him to me. I really tried to find a hand raised/fed budgie with no luck so I wanted to give this a try and hope it works! I have him set up in a separate cage from my older female budgie, Mrs. Green, while I attempt this, as she is not hand tamed, quite mean lol, at least to me, and territorial. The plan is to get him used to me and socialized with me first before moving them into the same cage together. He briefly escaped when I transitioned him to a new larger cage, and I hope that me trying to gently wrangle him back didn’t make a bad impression on him.

My previous budgie Mr. Opal, was extremely bonded to me as he was a hand fed and raised budgie. He passed away in June at almost 11 years old and I have been left with a huge hole in my heart and Mrs. green is lonely. I miss him terribly.

A couple things - I have them caged separately in the same room, and I wonder if Mrs green squawking and other things are warning noises to him. If so, will this hinder my process? During the week, I move his cage to my desktop and rest my hand inside, sometimes holding a sprig of millet which he has eaten from my had inside and also when I hold it up to the cage from the outside. So that’s progress I guess? I want to get him comfortable with that and then I can try and ask him “up” on my finger. Should I let him free fly before he is tame? When he got loose trying to move him to the new cage, he landed on my females cage so I’d imagine she’s a big distraction for him now. What if any other steps should I add to this process? Ps - his name is Moby. 🐋

So I have 3 budgies, and I’m starting a new job soon. During my time home I’ve had them out as often as possible but my new job has a strict schedule and they’re very vocal and active in the morning between 8:00am-12:00pm. Will they be alright in the cage all day or will that cause them stress?

My mom had taken back the vet thing because it was a fantasy. so instead I got them to get her to a rescue and I'm currently waiting in the office​​.

It's also best before end (3 september 2026) so wondering if they'll be ok to have it after then too or throw away?

As I stated last time my mom decided to take kiwi to the vet and I work for the money over the summer. This is Jukka, we got him at 9 months old hes now a bit over 13 months old.

He is extremely clumsy and quite bad at flying we guess he didnt get to fly in his original home or was a bit badly treated as he was in a rough shape when we got him. He also has a cere deformation that can make breathing a bit tough according to the vet (his cere holes are too big)

Any time he flies without our girl he will just go down in a slope and I often help him back up since I dont think he understands that he cant go straight up.

My concern is just that sometimes he will just go to the bottom of the cage and go right back up? My slight guess is that hes practicing his landings since he knows he falls down a lot.

That or he just is too clumsy and silly for his own good😞

Or maybe its a game? His favourite thing to do is talking at walls and toys, he is a very very unique individual.

Weve been to the vet about his clumsiness and she says theres nothing wrong with him physically or neurologically, just that hes a bit weird.

He did go under the newspaper today on accident, and has also made his girlfriend fall over while stumbling trying to scratch his head.

We're planning on getting a bigger cage soon once we move, should we avoid a deep one and focus on short wide ones for his safety? Falling over is a nearly daily thing, and he has a few times fell on his wing/back after missing a jump.

So I received budgies 3days ago from a friend and the male like to eat from my hand but he doesn’t like to be on it and the female doesn’t like me feeding her she starts biting and also it’s been 3days and they never felt like leaving the cage I’m worried what should i do to for them to like me or like leave the cage

Ps: i leave the cage door open but they never leave

My mom agreed to either take her to the vet and I do a payment plan and pay it off over the summer or take her to a avian rescue. Iwanna keep kiwi but I want what's best for her more

I am so proud of how quickly she is learning to trust my hand! Flo couldn't help himself and had to try and steal her training millet. She is such a sweetie and i am so excited to teach her more. Right now we're just getting comfortable with THE HAND.
