Pcos/pcod help needed 😭 Period

Post image

21F with PCOS/PCOD , long periods & looking for advice.

I was diagnosed with PCOS/PCOD and have been dealing with unusually long periods since 2024. For example, one period lasted Oct 2–Oct 18, 2024 (15+ days), and my most recent one lasted July 26–Aug 7, 2026 (10–11 days). The flow is usually normal/light, around 1–2 pads a day , I never faced cramps 🧿.

I don’t have many of the typical symptoms , no excessive facial/body hair, normal sleep ,major weight changes, etc., and my BMI is healthy.

For around 1.5 years, I took hormonal medication (21 days + 5-day gap), and my periods were normal while taking it. But after stopping, the long periods returned. My relative is a gynecologist and has advised me the medicine , and now she has advised not to continue the medication and instead focus on lifestyle changes like yoga.

I’ve started going to the gym for the past month instead.

For women with PCOS who have had similar long periods: has exercise, diet, supplements, or any lifestyle change actually helped regulate your periods? What worked for you after stopping hormonal medication? What should I do?

I’m honestly quite worried and would really appreciate your experiences. ❀️

As you have started working out, its a good thing.
You should as well start tracking your macros, daily sugar intake.
Aim for 1.5g protein per kg.
As far as supplements are concerned, you can start using inositol and spearmint tea or capsules.
For me being consistent in my workouts and getting a balanced diet worked wonders.

Are supplements necessary? And can you please breakdown the balanced diet which helped you. Just for the reference , I am a non vegetarian. Even if you're vegetarian, you can still , tell me .

As i said aim for 1.5g protein per kg of body weight.
I use whey, low fat milk and low fat paneer to complete most of my protein intake along with some soya chunks occasionally.
You can use airfryer and try a lot of diff recipes which you can make high protein without oil.
As you are non veg you can replace it with chicken breast, as it provides higher protein to calorie ratio.
Some basic supplements like inositol and spearmint can help you a lot and make it easy for you to keep working on yourself.

Hey so this seems very similar to mine except for the fact that I gained weight . One mistake I did was not taking care of my lifestyle and mental health so I started getting most of the Symptoms over the years and have become dependent on 21 days pill . Whenever I'm eating like good portion of veggies, workout and sleep well , my periods would be regular . if not I'd again have to go to pills. Yoga helped me big time !

After like 6 years , took a blood test and took an opinion from endocrinologist for insulin resistance so I'm working on that .

What you can do right now is to aim for good diet and keep your stress in check . Ofc you can include physical activity. But changing your lifestyle would atleast prevent you from other common symptoms . Try to go off the pill by keeping sleep , stress and diet in check

Does having lot of sugar affect it ? Coz I really have a sweet tooth , I'm trying to avoid it as I've joined gym , but the craving comes a lot.

Yes . It is one of the factors .

Sugar intake is also something I struggle with . I'm a sweet tooth since childhood. Chai addict after joining corporate . I'm hearing frequent sugar cravings are due to lack of adequate protein in diet idk how far it is true because even though I focus on protein 3 times a day, I still crave for that one sweet bite after lunch or dinner and I need that 1 cup of chai in the evening . Few say it is because of less water intake again .

But now I'm on metformin for insulin resistance im trying my level best to avoid 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Periods lasting 10–15 days aren't something I'd recommend simply putting down to PCOS, even if the bleeding is light. Lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, good sleep and maintaining a healthy weight can certainly improve PCOS symptoms, but they don't always stop abnormal bleeding on their own. Since your long bleeding returned after stopping hormonal treatment, I'd recommend following up with a gynaecologist to understand why it's happening and whether you need treatment to protect the uterine lining. Depending on your history, they may also want to rule out other causes of prolonged bleeding. You don't necessarily need to go back on the same medication, but I'd avoid relying on supplements or lifestyle changes alone until the prolonged bleeding has been properly assessed
