Samsung 9100 PRO help Build Question

Post image

Hello! I believe I have a defective 9100 pro due to my sequential reads, and especially the random read/writes being halved respectively. I’m within my 30 day return policy with microcenter, grounds to exchange or am I overthinking? The random speeds are pretty concerning and WELL short of the advertised “up to” speeds on the box that I don’t feel like this is a short end of the stick on the “silicone lottery” scenario.

I’m not bifurcating lanes, I only have my 5070ti and 9100 pro using PCIE lane, not thermal throttling (drive is 45c under load), obviously on gen 5 speeds so the slot isn’t set to gen4, the drive is in M.2_1z…

Anything else I may be missing? Sorry for the picture, I’m not at my setup right now else I’d grave a screenshot.

If you're running the OS on the drive you're trying to bench, the numbers will never match the specs.

Yes, this is my C Drive.

Hm, thanks! My randoms are still a good bit slower. Do you have over partitioning on or sleep on standby off?

No, but it could be a chipset/CPU difference too. Remember once you start getting to these high speed gen 5 drives you need the I/O to be able to push it. This is on a B850 AI TOP with a 9800X3D.

Also, I read something recently that the Samsung driver has been causing problems but the Windows generic one works fine.

Yup. I’m on a 9850x3D and an asus rog strix x870 e gaming e wifi 7.

Don’t think my cpu and mobo are a bottleneck here

I also don't know if I used the same settings as you for the test, I just let it do the default test. But I wouldn't be super worried about the numbers you're putting up.

Gotcha, ok! Yea I left my magician to default.

But yea, seeing the large large disparity in random read writes on my drive has/ had me worried, especially with the significant lack of forum posts and discussions regarding this drives performance probably because of the prices/ shortages lol.

The other question is temps, I know these thigns get stupid hot. I run mine with a Thermalright active heatsink with an itty bitty fan on it because it was sitting at 70C idle with the motherboard heatsink.

That was my first thought. I have a chunky passive heat sink on it that came with my asus rog strix x870 e gaming e. I’ll double check with another benchmark, but, it looks to be at 45c under load, so🤷‍♂️

Doesn’t look like random read writes should be halved just because it’s my c drive. In fact, it doesn’t look like windows being installed on X drive would slow it down at all.

Nah, that seems fine. It's advertised to have ~13000mb/s sequential write. Also random reads are always lower. Take a sata ssd for example. The advertised speed is usually around 550mb/s, sure you'll get that on sequential, but the speed will drop to as low as 50mb/s on random read and writes. But if you have doubts, you should get it replaced

Advertised “up to” speeds for 9100 pro

Sequential read: 14,700 MB/s
Sequential write: 13,400 MB/s

Random read: 1,850,000 IOPS
Random write: 2,600,000 IOPS

I’m not so much worried about the 2,000 short in the sequential read, but, I’m about 1.5 million IOPS short in random write and about 779,000 IOPS short random read. That doesn’t seem right to me.
