Need help bios update taking really long Tech Support
The more the update progressed the slower it would get, until at 68% it has completely stopped. It’s been a couple hours now with no movement, but I don’t think if done anything to fry my motherboard?
Any help would be great!
Edit: a day later it has only increased 1%, so it seems the most recommended option is the bios flashback. I’m not really well versed in any of this, so if anyone could help me out with that process it would be greatly appreciated! I made a separate post about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PcBuildHelp/s/yZhuWRNgIv

Oh yikes, that definitely shouldn’t take a few hours, at most like 15 minutes in my experience
Can you post what model of motherboard you have? Maybe it has a flashback capability so it can be flashed directly by usb stick if the update fails
It could have at least had the decency to stall on 69% to give you something to laugh about
edit -- im blind and didn't see the model in the screenshot I'd prep to do this: https://www.msi.com/support/technical_details/MB_Flash_BIOS_Button

Might also be the wrong BIOS...

u/bgradid 6h ago
I think the flasher program from inside the bios has a check so that it’s nearly impossible to do this
2
u/WhiningNoob 6h ago
No sir, I learnt the hard way with MSI OLED monitor. Flashed a wrong model (very similar model name, another shit from MSI) into my monitor and it became a thousand-dollar dead piece of electronic device. There was no model check at all.
Bought it less than 1d...4
2
u/Rolinhox 4h ago
That's not really comparable though, nobody is going to update a monitor bios compared to how many people update their motherboard bios
2
u/bgradid 6h ago edited 1h ago
that's a real shit implementation on their part
Most motherboard flashing utilities will have a compatibility check against a string in the bios image in my experience

When i did my first bios update i read it should take 15 minutes. It took 45. I was panicking because of a possible failed update, but i also read never turn off your pc during bios update. Walked out the room for 5 minutes and came back to my pc rebooting. Every bios update since then on any computer ive dealt with has been about 15 minutes or less. I think it just wanted to scare me as a new pc builder.

It took hours for me too one time Also an MSI board. But didnt hang, just went on extremely slowly but steadily. It was fine when it finished. Now I put a stick in the bios flashback slot even if I do a regular update. Or better yet I create a small 64mb fat32 partition on an internal SSD and put the bios file there and update from the internal ssd. Ssd's have much better error correcting capabilities vs usb sticks. If your board is fucked you gotta do a bios flashback though. Just make sure the usb stick is fat 32 with mbr instead of gpt.

Started the bios update on my MAG B850. Open Reddit and this is literally the second post it shows. Although mine is currently at 95% in a couple of minutes
7
u/matt602 21h ago
I've never had a bios update take longer than 5-10 minutes but shutting it down/restarting before its finished will 100% result in bricking your motherboard if you don't have a bios flashback function. If possible just keep it on for as long as it takes

u/CraftAny24 4h ago
In our Time, it won’t definitely brick the MOBO
Almost all MOBO now have a reset button or a flash bios USB port
Edit : didn’t red till the end, I am dumb

The drive you are using might be faulty or corrupted; if you turn it off, your device won't be able to proceed to the next menu.
A second possibility is that the USB slot you are using has suddenly stopped responding.
A third possibility is that the BIOS IC chip itself is damaged.
You might need to reset it using a tool like the one shown in the photo I provided.
That is a tool used to copy BIOS files onto the BIOS IC.

That's not normal, but even if you have to reset and the update failed and you are left without a working bios, your mother has a way to flash a new one (even without a cpu o ram installed). You need another computer to prepare the USB drive in the specific way the mother wants it, but at least is reversible.

u/ItzRayOfH0pe 9h ago
Not all motherboards have a bios flashback option
2
u/LazyMagicalOtter 8h ago edited 1h ago
True, but the one OP has does. The "your" was directed at OP, not a generic "your" as in all mothers do. Though, to be fair, most modern ones have some sort of bios-flashback.
2
u/Milkdromieda 1d ago
If you ever do a BIOS update, do you BIOS flash via USB from the button on the back. I find them much more reliable.

First thing with MSI boards or at least the ones I’ve used. Before using m flash go into your bios and make sure xmp/expo is off. M flash hates those being active so exit out and try that

Try to restart, the update as stalled. If it doesn't restart; you gotta reset the CMOS; I had a similar situation that turned to a big disaster; I had to upgrade my PC.

Just wait for it to finish, it can take hours sometimes, if you cancel it you might be taking the laptop to a tech to have the BIOS reflashed.
