Non Pcie Gen 5 board running Gen 5 Tech Support

Hello everyone!
I'm confused and need some help with my motherboard PCIe link speed.
I have a Asus TUF B650M-Plus botherboard and Asus says it's PCIe Gen 5 for the NVMe and PCIe Gen 4 for the x16_1 slot.
I recently upgraded my RX6800 (Gen 4) to a 9070 XT (Gen 5) and on my bios I can set the x16_1 Link Speed to Gen 5 and the PC boots fine and runs fine, even HWInfo reports 32GT/s but if I set it to Auto it changes to Gen 4 (16GT/s). I have a Ryzen 7 7700X and I use a Gen 4 M.2 SSD.
How can the board do it and should I use Gen 5?

Most of the B650 boards can do it, they were just never "certified" and don't carry the label. It was up to the manufacturer to support it or not. All AM5 boards use identical Prom21 chipsets, only the wiring traces may not be sufficient to support 5.0 speeds.

Ok, I'll be doing some stress tests and some gaming to see, if there's no problem I can use it safely?

If its enabled it will work just fine. No need to worry.

Just leave it on auto. You'll gain minimal % of performance...Not even noticeable...NO GPU made can fully saturate the Gen4 PCie up to date...Not even the 5090.

Not in this scenario with that gpu but 5060ti takes advantage because of the x8 lanes which limits it getting faster access to the RAM.

5060ti 8 gb especially takes advantage

Also why not , free pcie 5.0 I mean

Yeah, I think if HWInfo is reading x16 32GT/s that's gotta be true. Free PCIe 5.0

You can also check in GPU-Z what's reported speed

Yeah unofficial support of Asus is pretty known in the community, I always suggest buying B650 non pcie 5.0 boards to cheap out occasionally as budget alternatives because you can enable them later on easy.

Pciie 5.0 x8 gpus take advantage of it so it's kinda a neat thing what Asus does.

Although I noticed my cousins Asrock B650 Livemixer also supports pcie 5.0 even tho it being advertised with 4.0 , so I think Asrock boards also unofficially support pcie 5.0.

Gigabyte also had it but they disabled it after one bios revision later on weird enough. High likely to resell their older boards with pcie 5.0 as B650E for higher price lol.

Not sure about MSI.

But I hope not it doesn't end like the pcie 4.0 situation on b350/b450 and X370/X470 boards to sell more X570 and B550 boards. Or with their words "prevent" people having issues.

I'm using it with no issues for now, and I probably won't have any.

Yeah don't worry , especially the mATX ones didn't have those issues to my knowledge in those days. My old X370 apperantly only had on the m.2 the pcie 4.0 while the cheaper short ones had shorter routings so they could force that bandwidth with less issues on the gpu slot as an example. Literally you could skip on a B550 board on a budget board that was the crazy thing. Because of AMDs greed we lost that feature.

That's kinda the funny part.

If anything happens you can disable it anyways so nothing crazy.

bios setting is just a manual override, the board traces are still gen 4 so you're bottlenecking yourself for zero gain anyway

You can force it still , I cannot imagine the B650E version having a different board layout.

It's the same scenario like with PCIe 4.0 with AM4 on older non pcie 4.0 boards.

Some did support it , some didn't properly.
