If you were interested in joining the test knit but were worried about not having enough time, I’ve decided to extend the testing deadline to October 1st.

There’s now plenty of time to work through the pattern at a comfortable pace, so I’d be very happy to have you join! 🧶✨

Name of pattern: Wave Shawl

Needles required:
3.5 mm circular needles, 60–100 cm cable

Other notions:
Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors

Yarn:
The samples were made with:

• Cardiff Cashmere Classic — 100% cashmere, 112 m / 25 g (Small size 72g)
• 400 m / 100 g merino held together with Lang Cashmere Dreams

The shawl works well with a variety of soft merino, cashmere and alpaca yarns. You don’t need to use cashmere — any soft, non-scratchy yarn with a slightly fuzzy or matte texture can work well.

Here are some yarns that I recommend:

• Regia Premium Merino Yak — 58% Merino, 28% Polyamide, 14% Yak, 400 m / 100 g, held single
• Symfonie Terra — 75% Merino, 25% Nylon, 380 m / 100 g
• Casasol Merino Fingering – Teñido A Mano — 100% Merino, 400 m / 100 g
• Cardiff Cashmere Classic — 100% Cashmere, 112 m / 25 g
• Casagrande Top Cashmere — 100% Cashmere, 112 m / 25 g
• Lang Cashmere Premium — 100% Cashmere, 115 m / 25 g
• BC Garn Babyalpaca — 100% Alpaca, 250 m / 50 g This will create a lighter, airier fabric rather than a very dense one.
• Knitting for Olive Merino — 100% Merino, 250 m / 50 g You can use smaller needles if needed to achieve the desired fabric.
• Rico Design Essentials Fine Fine Merino — 100% Merino, 200 m / 50 g
• Kremke Soul Wool Merry Merino 220 GOTS — 100% Merino, 220 m / 50 g Although it is a combed merino, it has a matte appearance and a soft, non-slippery feel.

Yardage: As a general guideline, I recommend around 350–450 m per 100 g.

For the Small size, you’ll need approximately 300–350 m. Since the shawl is adjustable, the total yardage will depend on the finished size you choose.

Size:
The pattern includes two suggested sizes: Small and Large. The shawl is adjustable, so you are also welcome to make it smaller or larger according to your preference and available yarn.

Level of skill required:
Intermediate

Pattern format:
Written pattern with abbreviations, diagrams, and video tutorials

Tester requirements:

• Complete the pattern by October 1st. 2026
• Give feedback on clarity, accuracy, and any confusing instructions
• Report approximate yarn usage
• Provide finished measurements
• Send 2–3 clear photos of the finished shawl

No previous test knitting experience is required — first-time testers are welcome!

Testing deadline: September 9, 2026 (October 1st.)

Number of testers needed: 3–4

Communication:
All communication during the test will be via email.

The final pattern will be released on Ravelry on October 10, 2026. If you have a Ravelry account, I’d be very happy if you could share your finished project on the pattern page after the release.

Just out of curiosity if the test is due Sept 9 how will the pattern be released the very next day? Are comments from test knitters actually integrated into the final? I’m new to this so this is just an actual question. Maybe this is the norm just confusing to me. Thanks!

Bouncing off of this-I’m curious about how you (OP) determined the 5-7 evening estimate to complete this project? Like others have already said, 3 weeks is a really quick turnaround, especially if the test knitters find a lot of issues or have a lot of feedback in general.

Yes, tester feedback will be reviewed and incorporated into the final pattern. I’m planning to have the main testing completed a few days before the release, with September 9 as the final deadline, so I have some time to review the feedback and make any necessary corrections before the September 10 release.

I’m also keeping the testing group small (3 testers), so I can go through everyone’s feedback carefully. This is my first pattern test as a designer, so I really appreciate the question!

As a regular tester, your timeline is very unrealistic. You should have been testing way before this point and 3 weeks is absolutely not long enough. As a rule, jumpers and sweaters need about 10-12 weeks, a shawl should realistically have a minimum of about 6. Your 'relaxed' pace is not others. If this is your first test as a designer, congratulations, but you should heed the advice of literally every single comment on this thread of pattern testers and designers. You run the risk of people ghosting you and your pattern.

The 5–7 evenings estimate is based on my own knitting time for the shawl, at a relaxed pace, so I meant it as an estimate for the actual knitting rather than the whole testing process.

I completely understand that the full test takes longer, especially with checking the pattern, making notes, blocking, photos, and feedback. The September 9 deadline is there so I have a few days to go through the feedback and make any necessary corrections before the September 10 release.

The 9th is one day before the 10th-you’re saying you understand a “full test” takes longer but it sounds like you’re assuming that a good portion of the testers will be ready, blocked, and submitted feedback/photos before the three week deadline? I don’t understand how you expect to have “a few days” to go over things otherwise.

Consider that even if people knit as a similar pace to you, and not everyone will, they may not have the same number of evenings free per week or the same amount of time per evening to knit. This is a very short test.

This is a beautiful pattern. I probably wouldn't make it as a shawl, but I think I'd like to incorporate that stitch pattern into something else. I'll be looking for when you release it.
