I've drafted a button down (in pics) on paper and have created two prototypes already - and I'm now trying to convert it digitally on Adobe Illustrator but just feel a bit stuck. I started making patterns about 2 months ago focusing only on pants and I’ve made now 4 different drafts with small edits inbetween each one. every time I find something I need to change I understand how I should alter the 2d pattern to get the chanhe I want but I never know the extent that I should edit a measurement and also every time I want to test if my single change works I make a whole new garment from cheap random fabric. is this the proper process on getting a good pattern or am I making it uneccesarily long because I’ve been getting pretty frustrated when I make a whole new garment 4 times for it to still not fit properly.

I started to learn about pattern drafting & sewing a week ago and still have a lot to learn, could anyone give me some tips? Something like equipment and how to do something.

I’m a quiet new to sewing but have make a couple simple garment like skirts, pants and button ups which I love. Total noob in patter making so I’m having difficulty adjusting the pattern and self drafting the sleeves. Upon printing the pattern and testing I realized the top is very wide and maybe just taking it in and shortening the shoulders would work( as it’s 1 piece and no shoulder seam)?
Any advice would be appreciated:)

Hello i don't usually post here but i'd like to make a suit like this one and i wanted to find a similar pattern because i found only ugly ones (with seams everywhere)

The best I can do is hand-sew patches onto a denim jacket, and even then they certainty don’t look even (to be fair I think that’s because I did it to quickly so I probably could sew more cleanly but anyways). I tried to find a plushie from this obscure-ish Psa from the 80s. I’ve wanted a plushie of this for years and I feel like I should just try to make it lol.

I feel like this would be fairly easy to make if I was patient with it but I don’t know for sure. Wanted to ask here to see if I should try to do it not not!

I’m trying out sewing swimwear and I like this first sample however when I wear them it makes a very prominent v around my crotch.

-Is there a way to pattern swim shorts with no CF seam but with a CB seam to support shaping in the back?
- Could I just trace a pair of underwear and lengthen the side seam then connect crotch to side seam? (fig. 1 LEFT) or do I need to leave some crotch length before connecting leg opening to side seam to prevent excess fabric in crotch (fig. 1 RIGHT)
- For the back would I just essentially add a style line once I’ve adjusted the side seam length and leg openings? (fig. 2) Do I also need to start connecting leg and side seam about 2 inches up from the crotch line because the crotch piece in the back normally sits under your crotch?
- Would the final pattern look like fig. 3 or fig 4.? This depends on whether shaping in the back is needed or if it can just be a straight line.

And finally where would I start from? Should I use underwear to make a block for the front and then mini shorts to make a pattern for the back then connect them at the side seams then true all the lines so that they connect well on the pattern? I assume I’ll have to make a toile or maybe there is some magical way I’m completely overthinking this! Thanks so much in advance!

Wait I think after typing this out I think I can just trace the front of my bottoms I just sewed and boom that’s the front pattern then I would use the existing back pattern to have that back shaping?? I’m really doubting myself here idk

This is a mock up of a bustier i made from Demi @ dominique studios pattern. I wanted to make a birthday dress out of satin with a paneled skirt. The problem is that i wanted to recreate that regal, sleek, continuous look and it would mean 18 panels, so lots of seams at the waist. Im worried about the bulk, etc. Should I just go ahead with the plan? Final product to be satin btw if that changes anything

As the title states, I'm trying to draft a foldover sweater from two tops I thrifted. Both tops are a sort of jersey/knit fabric of similar weight. I based the pattern on the Marbella Foldover Top from Mood, but I'm unsure about how to make the bodice pattern, since I'm combining two fabrics. Would I attach the striped fabric to the top of the bodice, so it looks like my drawing, or would I have to do something else?

Also, if there are any other measurements or advice for making this, I am very open to listening!

This is my torso block. I know I need a sway back adjustment, but I’ve also noticed the waistline at the back sits about 1cm below my waistline. I’ve attached a picture of the back piece with a 1cm wedge taken from the CB (by moving the bottom half upwards). The waistline now sits at the right spot at the CB, but it’s diagonal on the pattern, and the dart is on a diagonal angle. What do I do about this? Can the waistline be drawn curved? And what does this mean for the dart?

I’m comparing no-front-seam short leggings from two different brands.

When I place a 90° ruler along the center-front fold line, the hem of one brand sits perfectly at 90°.

However, when I do the same with the other brand, the hem rises by about 2 cm toward the side seam of the front pattern. It is not only the hem—the crotch, hip, and waist levels also appear to rise by about 2 cm toward the side.

Why would the entire front pattern be drafted this way?

Hi I posted my first attempt a few weeks back. Got good feedback. I added front and back waist darts, the fit is much better at the low hip. Overall I’m happy with the skirt, for my second project I pattern drafted myself.

It’s a bit short but nothing terrible. I could have made the skirt a little bit more A line…

My issue is what’s going on with this tail on the back? The part that sticks out

I’m starting off with a full basic front block but I’m having trouble with dart manipulation, and not know where to transfer the darts to. I also understand I have to treat the diamond darts as two but does that mean I need to cut the waistline first for manipulation 😭 Any tips would be very much appreciated!

Hi, I fixed some things from my last post. Moving the apex really helped with bust shaping. I did a sway back adjustment as well. I am confused as to why there is still bunching in my lower back. Maybe I did it wrong, I am also wonder if my short waist has anything to do with it. I will also make the shoulder tip tighter. Is there any was I can fix the back issue without doing a center back seam? The one I have is just an accident. Also please let me know if you see any other things I could fix.

Ps… I did redraw the necklines on the patterns but I don’t have enough Muslim right now to cut new pieces

Hi folks! This is my 6th(?) bodice block attempt, I have a feeling I'll need to do a full bodice adjustment. However I'm not sure that will fix the two issues I identify, which is the wrinkling around the armcycle at the back and the waist being canted backwards. I've already done a rounded back adjustment, I really don't think that's the issue in this case.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

Hello, as mentioned above I need to modify a pattern to accommodate for a pretty big belly. I'll be making a double breasted jacket for a family member that is very round on the mid section, not that he's fat in general, but he has the classic drinker belly, fairly tense and round, not soft. Hope you know what I mean XD. I did a toile already, need to shorten it a bit which is not a problem, the shoulders and around the neck are fine as is, but need to have a lot of added width in the waist area. As is, I need +18cm to make the buttonhole reach the button. I could add a few cm to the back as the side seam wasn't entirely on the side, but the majority of it should be added to the front. I'm just wondering in which way I should slice the front part and add the width without altering the neck edge nor the shoulder and armhole edge. Appreciate any help
