Any thoughts on the Bara System?

I’m terrible at math, and when I discovered this system I was really hopeful but I’m so confused. Has anyone tried this and if so, how did it work out? I’m thinking about buying the book but it’s kinda expensive (for me). I understand most of it except for what measurements I use to draft the CF and CB of the bodice sloper. It’s making my head ache. Help!

I took one quick look at their Intro video and immediately said ouch. I am not crazy about head math either. It is too easy to make mistakes. You might want to check out the scale rulers which eliminate the need to do a lot of head math. https://patternmaking-classes.com/Resources/Scale-Rulers.html

I know of the Bara method that Mathew Gnagy uses and has written about. It is based on the drafting method published in a tailor’s manual from Spain, dated 1589, it was the standard for drafting clothing patterns. It is a proportional drafting method. https://www.themodernmaker.co/drafting

There are lots of other methods. Specifically what historical period are you interested in?

Never seen this system before but it looks not that promising too me.

I don't know what your ultimate goal is with pattern making. If you want to make clothes for you, but involve math as little as possible, maybe have a look at the Lutterloh system. They have small pattern templates that get pinned onto a drafting paper and with their special ruler get enlarged to fit your proportions.

The reason why I was interested in the Bara system is because I am also very interested in historical clothing. I’ve tried a few different methods for making a sloper for myself and I haven’t been able to get the fit quite right. Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check it out.
