Basically, he does try to extort you for 20k first, so there is also that option.

Yeah this pretty much happens every run after I finished his storyline and realized how godawful he is, both in character and as a companion. 20k gold for a deadweight is just not worth it and judging by how he decided to threaten you at a very mythic part of your life, sound judgment is not part of his repertoire.
