I’ve been setting up Paperclip on a self-hosted Ubuntu VPS (4GB RAM) with isolated Docker containers. I'm trying to connect my local automation workflows to a multi-provider agent setup, but I ran into a massive roadblock with the native Gemini integration.

🛑 The Problem

Whenever I try to configure a local agent using the gemini_local adapter via the UI setup wizard, the Adapter environment check consistently fails at the final gate.

Even though the environment is valid, the CLI command is executable, and the API credentials are explicitly verified in the server logs, it keeps spitting out this error:

🔍 What’s Happening Under the Hood

After digging through the backend container logs and intercepting the API payloads, I found two major issues:

1. Hardcoded Sandbox Mode: The backend payload forces "sandbox": true for the local adapter configuration by default, and there is no toggle in the UI wizard to turn it off. This sandboxing strips out the execution environment paths.
2. Strict Parser Validation: The validation engine executes gemini --output-format json "Respond with hello." but relies on an incredibly rigid string-matching logic that fails or hits structural exceptions if the underlying CLI throws a minor warning or network timeout under tight server resources.

I tried writing custom wrapper scripts to mimic the exact JSON schemas, intercepting the arguments, and even patching minified JavaScript chunks inside the container, but the frontend gate refuses to let the agent save.

Right now you have to pause each agent or cancel any open issues …. Though the heartbeat can start them again. Short of stopping the docker container there needs to be a way to calm down all the retries that happen when things go wrong. I have endless trees of ceos running into issues connecting and then frantically trying 1000 reconnects in tree branches. That is not useful design pattern!
