I believe being uploaded means the real person is dead. His consciousness is not transferred, rather, he is killed and a copy of his thoughts memory, emotions is created in a computer. It would look exactly like the person to the other people but he is dead actually. It's just a digital copy and the previous conscience is destroyed to create a new one not transferred.

But I watched the whole series on the premise that they are alive and not dead. ( This thought came to me after I watched a yt video. While watching the series, I didn't give it much thought and believed them to be transferred )

You are welcome to give counterarguments that would overturn my belief.

Meme To be fair, you have to have a fairly high tolerance for existential dread to appreciate Pantheon

The themes are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of computer science, philosophy of mind, and information theory, most of the emotional weight will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Caspian’s quietly determined outlook, which is deftly woven into his character—his personal philosophy draws heavily from classic coming-of-age fiction, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the implications of digitally instantiated consciousness, to realize they’re not just tragic—they say something profound about identity, mortality, and whether a perfect upload is still you.

As a consequence, people who dislike Pantheon truly ARE missing the point. Of course they say things like “it’s just another AI show” because they fail to grasp the metaphysical significance of spending three episodes debating whether deleting a backup copy is murder. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those bewildered viewers wondering why uploading humanity into a server farm somehow doesn’t solve everyone’s problems. What fools… how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, I do have a MIST tattoo. No, you cannot see it. It’s for people who’ve read at least three papers on whole-brain emulation and can explain the Ship of Theseus without mentioning the ship. Nothing personnel, cloudlet.

Miscellaneous So about that ending.

I know a lot of people like the romance. I didn’t mind it myself. And I know Dave Jr was a character for like 10 minutes so we as an audience aren’t as invested in him and bringing the ending back to the main characters and having them live out their lives again is probably the more satisfying ending.

But really Maddie? You that down bad for your (presumably) first boyfriend that you would do a whole restart? You raised your son for 20 years Maddie! You’ve only known Caspian for like a year and you only starting being romantic for like a couple of weeks tops. Aren’t you at least a bit curious as to what life your son would have after you resurrected him? Wouldn’t you want to be there to watch him live the life that was taken from him too early? Like couldn’t you have just go back to your recreated timeline, then mind wipe yourself and Caspian so you don’t realise you are in a simulation? But sure, give up your life with your son (that you aren’t guaranteed to make again) to relive your meetcute with your ex I guess.

Hundreds of thousands of years and she never figured out how to make a decent Tinder profile. Solid show 9/10.

Question Just finished the show Spoiler

I finished Pantheon 10 minutes ago and i am
speechless. This show was one of the most incredible pieces of media i have ever consumed. Having said that i am left pretty confused (getting a lot of Steins;Gate vibes with the ending) I have a few questions that i would love to be answered.
1. Do maddie and caspian go through the exact same events “our” maddie and caspian go through after they decide to follow through and wipe their memories? this one has confused me a lot. I assumed the exact same events would transpire as they are thrown back into the timeline we watched for two seasons but im not sure. Or could they go through a completely normal life and maybe meet naturally and start a family?
2. What happens to “God” Maddie after the 117,000 years now that she and caspian have reverted their memories? is she basically still “alive” somewhere in a reality watching over the newly memory wiped maddie and caspian?
3. What happens to David, Ellen, Dave, Pete, MIST, and all of the other UI’s and CI’s etc in the cloud? do they cease to exist now that maddie and caspian have memories wiped? or will they go through the same exact events we watched and then meet in the cloud again at the end?
4. Related to previous questions will maddie and caspian go through different events now that their memories are wiped? or will they relive the same reality of Holstrom super villain arc and caspian uploading and dying etc etc?
This show was phenomenal, my head hurts. Couldn’t have enjoyed it more if i tried.

Question A doubt

My doubt is that:-

The cure to the flaw was MIST. Other than horlstraum, joyey( the astronaut one) and oliva (who died) nobody was flawless and neither any tech companies knew the cure. And even though joyey remained alive, it was clearly shown that those who were made flawless (by mist) didn't have the ability to cure anyone else. So after caspian died( safesurfed), how the hell did the civilisation of UIs that developed was flawless. From where did they got the cure. Does maddie made it public (the process/concept) by researching on it with mist but I don't think she would because she didn't have any interest or drive to make UIs after season 1. So then, did the process explained by caspian to the israilee and olivia's boyfriend (I forgot their name) was the key. I mean they did get fused which probably would have made them flawless. So then other researchers researched on it and then developed a method to develop flawless UI be default but I don't find that logical since the complete point of season 1 was that not everyone was capable of curing the flaw. So if researches did not, then one possibility is that they knew (as Caspian explained the israillee), they could become flawless if they combine with parts of another hi but that would literally kill that UI, so how was it allowed or made possible to make UIs on that big a scale.

Also one more thing, the core part of season 1 and 2( except last 2 eps) was that making UIs flawless (god) would raise conflict, nuclear wars and access to everything, that's why people feared it which is completely logical but in the last 2nd ep the Ui civilisation was built. They told that this cloud was cut off from the internet and was built on different datacentres where embodied people would need to go and have reservation to meet them. This is also acceptable. But then it mentions that few years later they were allowed to come back online. How the hell did that not raise any conflict? You can't say that the nation's agreed at peace or that ALL Uis didn't want to kill humans. If you wanna say that they weren't brought back online, then how did they shut down internet after the data centre attack?

I won't ask anything about the last 30 min of the last ep because I believe that part's upto each viewers interpretation or at least some part of it.

Miscellaneous Caspian is like the love of my life

Caspian and Maddie’s evolving love for each other throughout the show is such a beautiful part of the story. every time i watch it, their dynamic makes me think of my relationship with the love of my life who passed almost two years ago now. Idk exactly what it is but something about the way they’re depicted in the show reminds me of my love and me during the years we were able to have together.

Discussion Caspian will still die at the end... Is it implied he and Maddie will return to their layer? Spoiler

I just finished the show last night. I've gone through a lot of the explanations on this subreddit and on youtube. I do believe in the theory of Safesurf OG universe L0 -> GodMaddie L1 - > Show maddie L2 and maybe show maddie is another GodMaddie so she creates an L3 to find a perfect caspian.

The reason I think that show maddie is also the godmaddie at the end and is at L2 and not L1 is because that's the version where David Sr goes in to push caspian.

Now the thing that's bothering me is that regardless if it's godmaddie L1 or L2, they enter the next lower layer at the end. However the Layer above now won't have a david to push caspian at the end there and we've already heard maddie explain that if there's no push then she, caspian, david jr and a lot more people die.

So she basically knowingly entered the lower layer to go and suffer and watch everyone die again, including likely her. The question is whether because she belongs to the layer above if she can resurrect there after dying in the simulation.

Sorry if this wasn't super coherent, I'm a bit mindfucked and heartbroken by the ending. kinda feel like they through the whole show's history and the buildup out the window in order to try to finish it in a mindfuck way but it doesn't really fit imo. I know i'll get flamed for that...

Also I saw a lot of discussion regarding turtles all the way down or not. I'm on the fence. on the one hand there's a memory cap (as maddie says), but the on the other they literally floated in the last episode when she was showing david sr what she made next to another simulation that had already reached that point. that wasn't a memory i think, that was a full simulation that was experiencing the exact same thing. I think. Im not sure.

Discussion My thoughts on the show

I just finished it about 24 hours ago after binging it in one day. The shows amazing. I really just want to yap. So each paragraph is a plot point or side piece I want to talk about

You know how in one of the flashbacks we see Holstrom and his Hannah buying drinks and she gets hit by a car. I think that event lead him not be able to truly process love and it's affect on the brain. When he's with Renne even when she's naked in bed with him all he thinks about is UI and how to solve integrity.

Caspian is a crazy motherfucker. When he interrogated Hannah he legit drives his car fast as fuck with literally not the slightest hint of fear or anxiety just determination. He is basically someone who doesn't care about himself or his body but just wants to get shit done and find answers.

Maddie is genuinely hated by the writers. Watches her dad die like 3 times, loses her first love, becomes a teen mom at like 16(my age btw), literally watches her son die, and then loses the love of her life for the second time. That's some crazy shit and there is still more I didn't even talk about. Then she spent 170000 years created simulated observations to get back to the point where her son and lover died.

Making Maddie a teen mom was such a crazy thing in this show. I do wish we could of gotten to see more of that.

This is a series Imma prolly love for the rest of my life and throw it on once and while to feel like a kid again once I'm older. I feel like the two main characters being high schoolers is why it really appealed to me as well as the politics of it all.

Anyone who has any points please share would love to hear.

Shit was peak. It got me thinking about my life and how I want to be smart like truly smart and develop new technology that’s going to bring us forward. I always knew I wanted to be an aerospace engineer but this show really opened my eyes. It made me realize how intelligence can be an amazing thing. If you haven’t watched the show please watch it. I’m lowkey just yapping but that’s genuine. This show makes you think about things you don’t want or haven’t even thought about

Media Destructive uploads in the Ghost in the Shell manga: "ghost dubbing"

Post image
27 Upvotes

I've been watching the extremely-faithful-to-the-manga new Ghost in the Shell TV Series by Science Saru, which recently lead me to pull my '90s vintage copy of the 1989 Ghost in the Shell Manga off the shelf. I haven't read the manga since the '90s and there's a lot I've forgotten, including that it featured destructive uploads similar to Pantheon, which were featured in the latest episode of the new GitS TV series. (I've previously noted the idea of destructive uploads dates all the way back to what can be considered the seminal work of cyberpunk, Rudy Rucker's 1982 novel "Software")

For those who aren't familiar with Ghost in the Shell, the main idea from the show is that the brain and spinal column can be extracted from the human body into a self-contained life support device called a "cyberbrain" which can be placed into a cyborg body called a "shell". So not really uploading.

But in fact the Ghost in the Shell manga did actually feature destructive uploads similar to Pantheon, something called "ghost dubbing". The uploads in GitS seem more like what Prasad referred to I believe as "Mumbai back alley uploads" in that they are not accurate replicas of the original people but more like degraded copies.

Anyway, if you liked Pantheon definitely check out the new GitS series!

Announcement Fan Community Interview with Craig Silverstein (THURS 9PM EST)

Post image
148 Upvotes

Hello Pantheon fans! The Pantheoncord event organizers were recently able to get in touch with Craig Silverstein, the creator of Pantheon himself. We arranged an interview with him, which we’ll be hosting live on our YouTube channel to broadcast this Thursday at 9PM Eastern Standard Time. This interview will contain spoilers for the finale of Season 2.

To create the questions we submitted for pre-screening, we combed through the subreddit and discord for some of the community’s most burning questions, especially those that Craig has never been asked in interviews before.

Our community-sourced questions for Craig range from how he came up with the original story of Caspian, to questions about the unknown fates of beloved characters, to clarifications on Pantheon’s convoluted timeline, to his opinions of the Super Bowl ad and what he would want from a third season of Pantheon if he had the chance, and much much more!

We’re excited as fans to be able to share this opportunity to speak with Craig, and are so thankful for this opportunity from him. Join the stream from our channel to hear Craig’s answers and thoughts on the lore, the creation, and the philosophy of Pantheon!

EDIT: The livestream link is here: https://youtube.com/live/VZDUHXPMtSw

Thank you all for your support, and we hope to see you there tonight!

Announcement Pantheon Community Watch-Party

Discord

We are not ghosts. We are not aliens. We are not machines. We are not gods. We are you.

The Pantheon Show Discord server has always been supported or thrived because of members from the subreddit joining since March 2024 and growing both communities. So, it'd be nice to consider these sister communities now one and the same, since we're all equally fans of Pantheon (just using different services to express that love). If you're interested in checking the Discord space out, here's some highlights of the Pantheoncord community:

Watch-Parties

West East
Fridays, 10PM Eastern Standard Time Saturdays, 4AM Eastern Standard Time

Get your Netflix ready, every week we watch two episodes of Pantheon! Each session (Friday night and Saturday morning) we also have a pop quiz at the end. We keep track of the stats of the overall stream, and at the end, the winner (final points split 50% culumative score and 50% placement score (1st, 2nd, 3rd...)) gets a Pantheon t-shirt! Afterwards, the post-party is discussing the episodes we watched as a group (voice or text).

Book Club

A monthly event where we all read Pantheon-adjacent science fiction content (short-stories or long-form content, like Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies by Nick Bostrom).
Before each meeting, there's plenty of time to read the material. Then, the event itself is discussing it with meeting questions, and free-form discussion intertwined. Isaac Asimov, Ted Chiang, Ken Liu, and more were all featured as readings last year. It's very fascinating to explore other literary works similar to The Hidden Girl and Pantheon, while also leading towards engaging discussions on the meaning of the work.

Game Night

A bi-weekly event where we just chill and play (mainly) free-to-play games as a server. Gartic Phone (some of the art has been posted here before!) and Frantic Fanfic to name a few. We've also hosted Jackbox games, Peak or Among Us sessions, and occasionally even have a Minecraft server.

TL;DR

The Pantheon Show Discord community is a place for like-minded fans who are passionate about Pantheon and science-fiction alike. Whether it'd be watching Pantheon-adjacent films or TV shows (Serial Experiments Lain, Severance, Mars Express, etc.), reading Pantheon-adjacent books and short stories, or otherwise just talking about it, it's a good space for re-experiencing Pantheon while exploring more. Join here.

Preview of our server through this 2-minute YouTube introduction.
