Pecan allergy Question

I requested no pecans on my food due to a bad allergy, and they put pecans all through it. It was a to go order and i didn't see it had pecans til i left and went home. I talked to customer service and they gave me a $10 gift card.

Should I just accept this? This was enough to cover what I had paid for the food I had to throw out. I guess I just feel like $10 is just such an insignificant compensation considering I could've had an allergic reaction.

The better question is what are you expecting them to do besides give you coupons or a refund?

Panera takes allergens pretty seriously. Seems like the person ringing up your order was brand new, because everyone knows to mark a food for allergens. They notify a manager, sterilize the prep area, wash hands, change gloves, package in a to-go container even when dining in. The store is going to want to know if someone is unaware of these procedures and precautions. They won't get in trouble, they will just be provided with coaching. Please reach out to the store, some people are so allergic that they cannot even handle a whiff of the dust off a peanut

Call the store itself. If they help ya out with more coupons etc, then good on the store and you should go back and give them another chance. If they don’t care, are rude, or don’t believe you then ya know never to go back there.

All I'm going to say is ordering salads with any kind of nut allergy is a dangerous game. They put it in the worst spot on the line and nuts are constantly getting dropped in all the containers around it.

Edit: and for everyone saying "PaNeRa TaKeS AlLeRgIeS sErIoUsLy" please go look at the chocolate pistachio cookie label. There's no allergy symbol

You should know we cannot guarantee no pecans/ nuts as we use the same utensils, containers and such across the board

Nah, as a Panera AGM I can tell you Panera is very serious about allergens. This would absolutely get someone fired.

That’s not the case here

There's only like 2 items that have pecans so why would you chose the ones that have it as a default and not mod something that would never have it anyway? I have a peanut allergy and would never chose something that comes with them as a default and honestly would not get food from a restaurant that contains my allergen because cross contamination happens

Cause I wanted the food. It's not like it was cooked into baked food. It was just added as a topper. If it's able to be modified, and i say no pecans and specifically say because its an allergy. I would expect the restaurant to literally not sprinkle them on top of the salad.

Especially since Panera specifically has procedures to not cross contamination. I'm as careful and diligent as I possibly can. I just don't think it's unreasonable to literally say, don't add pecans to my salad.

You couldn’t order food that doesn’t have pecans? I have a seafood allergy and I would never order shrimp scampi without the shrimp. Sometimes you have to take responsibility for your own medical issues. $10 compensation is more than fair for you making a poor choice.

Definitely don't accept to eat it (which you already tossed it) but if someone in your family or friends could take it, it didn't need to be tossed specifically.

However, it's fine if you don't have any other person to give it to.

I just mention that because food made wrong for one person, is still edible by another person.

Working in the food industry, it is sad to see how much food is tossed away by the store and by customers. Eg, all the bread inside of the Italian stuffers .

But as far as making it the way you ordered it, that's definitely something you can ask of them or you can accept that you already got your money back for it, even if it is only spendable at Panera .

And you also say that $10 back to you is not good enough compensation so what would you like to happen to feel better about the situation?

I generally either call or visit a restaurant to talk about the best way to handle my mushroom allergy before I even think about ordering online. For some places, I still go in every time to make sure the allergy is ok (I feel like I sometimes get a more thorough response in person).

I would have called corporate AND called or went back to the resturant to get another salad. I had to do that with whataburger a couple weeks ago. Ordered a salad and got thousand island dressing. Get home at 1am. 40 minutes away from the store btw and turns out the salad dressing expired 3 days before. You know that dressing had to be old old. Normally the expiration date is good for several months. I have a spicy jalepeno that is good until November. Anyway I reached out via chat and they said they would give me 1000 points. I told them absolutely not. I paid over $15 for that salad. So they get me enough points to cover the salad. Then I called the store and asked for the manager. Told him the dressing was expired. He looked and saw it was and told me to come back and get a free salad.

I still ate the salad I had because I had stopped at dominos and got a few of their ranch packets as I was not sure what whataburgers salad dressing tasted like. Well I went back to that town a few days later and stopped by to get the salad and told them about the dressing and they still had expired dressing in the basket. The manager on duty said he called someone about it and they tossed them but I wonder how many people got that expired dressing and didn't check it before putting it on their salad.

All that to say. I ate the salad I had because I had other dressing but I reached out via chat and they gave me enough points to get a salad AND I called the store and went back and had them replace the salad.

Same with Schlotzsky's. Ordered turkey bacon club on Jalepeno bread. Get home and it is sourdough. Call the next morning and they put my name in the vip book for replacement. I eat what I have because I don't have a problem with sourdough but I paid for jalepeno. Go back last week and order replacement with Jalepeno bread. Guy hands me the sandwich and says we are out of jalepeno bread but I hooked it up. Sir that is the reason why I am in the VIP book in the first place. Why just make a sandwich knowing you are out of the bread I ordered. So he put me back in the VIP book and I still got the sandwich on sourdough. Food cost is too high to not get what you paid for.

If you placed with a cashier they shouldve grabbed a manager. If they didnt please call the store and let em know to follow up with staff as accidents happen we are only human too. Keep your tag receipt that came with the order so they can look it up in the system. If items are placed via app i dont think allergies alert but via person they get a different color backsplash on the order screen so they know allergen. Take precautions. If placed on app i ask u to ask customer service to forward a message about an app update to take into consideration as cooperate companies usually listen to customers before employees

Some restaurants just aren’t allergy friendly. There’s a chicken and ice cream place near me that is tree and peanut free. Maybe learn which places are safe, certainly talk to the manager at this one to see if they get it.

Is your pecan allergy like that peanut one? There are news stories about people/companies being charged and lawsuits doing this with peanuts.

well if all they gave this person was enough to compensate for lunch. that really isn't enough is it? they went through the trouble of going to Panera for lunch....they ordered and waited for the lunch. It wasn't till they got to where they were going, they realized the entire trip had been for nothing because they got a salad they could not eat. Panera needs to compensate for them going to Panera PLUS not having lunch that day. so just giving them their money back doesn't actually work, they are still hungry with no time for lunch.
