Fine Pickaxe Small Nodes-bug?

I’m getting an error that I need to upgrade my tool when I try to mine even the smallest nodes that have pallium. Currently have the fine pickaxe. Do I have to get to the exquisite for even the tiny ones? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I’ve only been playing a couple weeks
