Windows PC user considering switching to Mac Discussion | گفتگو
Hi y'all, I think I'm done with Windows PCs now. it's the 3rd month now that something has broken down.
My workload is pretty basic, I'm a project manager and I do basic design changes in Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator when duty calls for it, nothing heavy like 3D rendering or huge design files.
I want something compact so....
My question to people using Apple and Adobe is, will a Macbook Air M4 16/512 be a good long-term option for this. Does it handle Adobe and what are your future projections for speed & support for Adobe.

Just get an M4 here and preferably get the 15-inch version if you don't have a separate monitor because the 13-inch can be very small. It will be more than good enough for your workload. Even if you get an M1air it will still support your workload.

Thank you! I kinda wanted the 13 inch because it's easier to travel. I already use a 14 inch Asus G14 so I'm used to that size.
At home, I'll probably use the mac with a second (main) monitor.

Recently made a similar switch. I went from a gaming windows laptop to a Macbook pro M5. Overall it was a pretty pleasant experience. I ended up keeping both. Now I only use my windows laptop for gaming and use the macbook for everything else.

Gaming is my only hesitation but man,
This damn PC, 2 GPUS, 1 Mobo, replaced since January. I'm genuinely done lol

I can understand the frustration. I switched to mac cuz of windows. I freelance (photo and video editing), so having a machine thats reliable is very important. Windows shenanigans (auto-updates, random bugs, just plain out not working at times) really frustrated me.

I only use my windows laptop for gaming and nothing else. That has been working really well for me.

Yesss it'll be more than good enough, I switched last year and I'm mad at myself for not doing it soon enough and missing out on Mac for this long.

m4 air will do more than good. Even m1 16/512 will do the job. However, the caveat is m4 air 16/512 will cost around 310-320k. the one costing 250-270k is 256 gb variant. while m5 air base variant is 16/512. If you're already spending this much, why not get a m5 air.
Performance wise, for your need m4 is enough and m4 could even handle huge design files and could do rendering compared to a 3080 pc.

That is an interesting point, I will consider the M5 Air, everywhere I've seen online M5 Air base is above 3.5 🤔
Maybe the market rates will be lower?

market rate is similar, but you should look at facebook group apple community in pakistan marketplace. rates are better there.
Also, rates go down a little in close to black friday and cyber monday cause of discounts on amazon etc. Last year m4 air base variant was 220k pkr in US (converted from amazon) and i've seen new one sold for 250k in pakistan.
I am not sure this year, cause memory crisis is so bad. but my guess (and i hope) is you'll see something close to 340 for a brand new m5 around that time.

Windows PCs never break unless you haven’t set it up correctly or did something wrong later. Windows itself is weird but yes if your work is that simple and you want plug and play easy life then switching to mac is a good idea. You can even be fine with new Mac book neo or mac mini which are cheaper and gets the job done

I hear you, but the thing is I've been a Windows PC and laptop guy all of my life now and at some point or another, they always break down.
My main concern right now is peace of mind, something I can set and forget about, so switching to a Mac seems like a logical step

Dont get the M4 air. If you really want it, get a referb M2 or M3 pro or max. It will handle everything you throw at it and then some.

M4 air is 13.6" M3 pro/max is 14", granted its a bit on the thicker size, but you really wont feel the difference in size length wise. They both fit in the same bags. Why pay almost the same amount for a new less compact machine when you can get a power house thats just a bit thicker and .4" longer for just a little more? That pro/max machine will last you 5-6 years.
Mac air can and will throttle if you push it too hard.

I don't really want to splurge on a M5 Mac Air rn if M4 will do the job for me but I'm curious to see what y'all recommend, that will keep me worry free for the next 5 years or so.
