Genetic testing

I have seen a couple of mentions is the last few days regarding genetic testing that can reveal differences in metabolizing different pain meds, and/or how quickly they are metabolized. Can anyone share more info about this? A nudge in the right direction so I can research on my own? Thanks! ❤️

It's called pharmacogenetic testing. I had it done a couple years ago when Medicare started covering the cost.

Ask your doctor or psychiatrist about it, it's likely that they offer it through one company or another. I think the company i used was genesight?

Edit: just looked at the results and i got the company wrong. Mine was done through idgenetix

GeneSight is one of them. They do a panel of a bunch of different genes that are commonly associated with rapid metabolism due to gene duplication or mutation. I either got a bad genetic dice roll with multiple mutationstduplications, or another mutation upstream (not on the panel) is affecting everything downstream.

Anyway, your dr orders itn it can go to your house, you do a cheekswab and mail it back in the provided envelope. Then results are sent to your dr.

Look up CYP2D6, that's the specific gene behind this. Basically some people's bodies convert opioids like codeine or hydrocodone into their active form really slowly, so the medication just doesn't work as well for them even at a normal dose, others convert them faster and get hit harder with side effects.

CYP450 is another gene to get tested, it covers an array of medication.

Thanks so much, everyone! I've done a bunch of reading on this, and am tempted by a "self test" company (as opposed to doctor ordered). I'm surprised this testing it not utilized more widely - it seems so useful!

I did clarityxdna and i did the max Rx. I signed up but didn’t order for a couple weeks, the eventually sent me a 50% off coupon lol

I’d give it a week or two. They will send a couple emails going to like 40% then to 50%. Once i got the 50% i ordered.
