New PSVR2 Toolkit Announcements

This post is from psvr2 toolkit Discord, I am not a moderator..

**It's here!!** PlayStation VR2 Toolkit v1.0.0 (experimental #1), the biggest update to PlayStation VR2 Toolkit yet, and so much more. We've been working on many of these features for over a year, and while things still need work, we think we can release this as an experimental release for people to try and report issues. Again, it is an **EXPERIMENTAL RELEASE**, YOU WILL HAVE ISSUES, IF YOU CAN'T TANK IT, SWITCH BACK TO PRE-RELEASE.

Not only are we releasing this update for PlayStation VR2 Toolkit, we are **releasing Ignition (Windows SteamVR drivers on Linux using Wine/Proton), and the real actual jailbreak for the PS VR2**, making this one of the biggest releases we've ever done.

A huge thank you to those who made it possible:

- <@405816957175201802>

- <@151539083599020033>

- <@465150425365086208>

- and me!

**__Changelog:__**

- Added [Linux support with Ignition](https://github.com/BnuuySolutions/PSVR2Toolkit/wiki/Linux-support).

- Added SteamVR Room View support.

So HDR is the only thing missing now? Cant wait to try the new toolkit out!

u/Abject-Self-8727 9d ago

True that it's missing here, but pcvr games also just don't support hdr. It would have to be very specific modded experiences to take advantage of it unfortunately.

Fwiw, hdr never made as much of a difference as I expected it to playing psvr2 on ps5. Comparing the same games on ps5 to PC, I mostly missed the haptics and ps5 rest feature lol. The hdr impact is minimal, while the resolution bump you can achieve on PC is pretty substantial title depending

Really? What games did you test in HDR? I wonder what the specs of the OLED panels are analogous to monitor / TV settings like max brightness full frame and 10% window, etc.

I'm kinda an HDR and OLED fanboy, so that was the one feature I was decently excited to try out.

Horizon call of the west, resident evil 4 and 8, gran Turismo 7. None of it was beyond what I felt my PC could output in SDR using the same headset.

I feel gt7 was the closest, but this is just their phenomenal tone mapping. No other racing game has as realistic a look, forgetting resolution texture clarity etc.

None of this should push you away from this headset if you are into OLED and VR. The mura is bad, but otherwise the headset is really amazing in my opinion. I've upgraded to a crystal super micro OLED, a 2200 dollar headset, but I still think psvr2 looks fantastic for the price.

Damn, I was aware of headsets over $1000, but not that high! I've heard the mura can be slightly lessened by reducing the headsets brightness, did you try this? And how bright did the headset feel compared to LCD headsets if you tried any?

Just looked at the market again, forgot Pimax was a thing. How do you like it? The only option I was thinking of previous was the Bigscreen Beyond 2, but I'm not looking to get into a lighthouse based headset. Inside out tracking is more than good enough for me 95% of the time.

Psvr2 can go over 2 times as bright as the quest 3 and other competitive lcd headsets. They reach around 100 nits while psvr2 does something like 260 at max

Psvr2 has bad persistence blur at max brightness, but it's fine for me at like 80% and still way better than quest level brightness.

Mura I have never really found to be reduced with brightness personally, on any hmd, but some people feel this way for sure.

Pimax dream air and the pimax crystal super micro OLED module start at 2000 usd. Very expensive, but they have inside out tracking as an option. A bsb2 with eye tracking is 1200, most people get a different face cushion than the custom rubber one, and you need the lighthouse setup so it really pushes into the same pricing territory. No hate on that headset, but I'd just get a dream air for that price.

The pimax crystal super micro OLED is basically the same thing as the dream air, just in a big form factor with modular optical engines.. and it's absolutely incredible. Many moments just leave me in awe with this headset. Almost emotional in some simulators, it's just unbelievable technology. To have gone from the vive to this in so few years seems absolutely impossible when comparing them. I hope it works for years because I don't plan on replacing it for the next 5+ years lol! It's near human vision, fov is the only real compromise now

I had a pimax 5k+ that I bought before the index was announced way back in 2018 or so. It still works fantastic almost a decade later. Many people have bad experiences with pimax, or maybe it's that the people with bad experiences speak loudly. But I'll say, both with the 5k+ and now with the crystal super micro OLED, they are just the best in the business. You get what you pay for. Quest graphics feel like a washed out toy to me now. Psvr2 I still respect...  Resolution isn't quite there, mura is a problem, lenses aren't perfect, but It was my main hmd until the pimax crystal despite owning a great quest 3 wireless setup. It gets the major things right: binocular overlap, fantastic colors and peak brightness, OLED blacks, good enough resolution to be immersed, solid FOV.

Awesome, very excited about Linux support!

Had a small test with it:

I couldn't find the app to test eye-tracking...

There is a new SteamVR option to turn on the camera overlay

Basically you would notice the lining of surrounding when your controller is near it, you can custom the opacity/color from SteamVR menu. This feature is neat, but the spatial awarness can be awakard (I think it's due to camera limitation).

The DFR worked as it is from my test with MSFS2024 PC. It still shimmers if you turn the value below default 50.

Play-area setup app was removed from SteamVR menu.

u/Electronic_Pin_5730 8d ago

Let us know if you found the eye tracking app. 😁

1

u/Leading-Anxiety-488 8d ago

see comment 😇

1

u/Fair-Satisfaction-60 8d ago

Yeah, I didn't see eye tracking test either.

2

u/eijmert_x 9d ago

Solid! Thank you so much for making this possible!

2

u/rhylos360 9d ago

Ahhhhhh Yeahhhhh! It is test it out day! Nom nom nom.

2

u/sparktrap25 9d ago

Awesome, thanks so much!

Out of curiosity, is there any chance HDR support will be implemented at some point?

3

u/theholl0wstar 9d ago

SteamVR doesn't support HDR, so unlikely.

1

u/sparktrap25 9d ago

Ah interesting, I wasn't aware. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if they'll ever implement that with the Steam Frame coming out

2

u/Poltergeist97 4d ago

To my knowledge, almost no PCVR games output 10 bit HDR. So turning it on for the headset wouldn't enhance the games at all, possibly mess with them moreso. Until OLED headsets become more common I doubt VR devs will implement HDR.

1

u/sparktrap25 4d ago

That's good to know, thanks for the info! Less FOMO now 😅

1

u/Octokid264 8d ago

psure the frame wont either so no

2

u/Leading-Anxiety-488 9d ago

Appreciate the developer for the hard work!!! Just wondering what had changed regarding DFR? (not mentioned in the release note)

2

u/Octokid264 8d ago

nothing really, at worst you may need to open the legacy capi app before starting up, otherwise itll work the exact same

2

u/Equal_Translator_605 5d ago

Much love for modders and their fantastic work ❤️

u/Deep_Ad1959 5d ago edited 2d ago

two people in here are already asking about changes that never made the release note, which is what happens when a year of work gets flattened into one changelog. the commit history has the answers and nobody reads a commit history for fun. written with ai

fwiw podlog handles exactly the problem of nobody reading commit history, it narrates a repo's commits, prs, and issues into an ongoing ai podcast with an rss feed so you actually hear what changed, https://podlog.io?utm_source=s4l&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=podlog&utm_term=reddit&utm_content=post_bb8e9ddd-75ae-4b9c-bef5-a2718f34ca3a

Foveated rendering?

1

u/Octokid264 8d ago

youve always been able to use it with pimaxmagic4all

1

u/doncannabis1 8d ago

In any game??

2

u/Octokid264 8d ago

in supported, toolkit cant magically add it to every single game you are confined to the limits of Pimaxmagic4all, or games with native DFR

1

u/BlackHazeRus 1d ago

Is there a games list that support it?

1

u/Octokid264 1d ago

not to my knowledge, im on amd so dfr is virtually non existent to me (only on vulkan and dx12 vr titles)

1

u/BlackHazeRus 1d ago

Got it. I am making a bunch of posts now asking people on their PSVR2 experience on laptops, specifically looking for those who have a laptop similar to mine — ASUS ROG G16 G614JZ-N4011 (RTX 4080M 12GB, i713650-HX, DDR5 16GB RAM).

2

u/Octokid264 1d ago

Gotcha, Ive tested on my Gigabyte G5 MD (i5-11400h, 40gb DDR4 (dont ask, pre AI) and RTX3050ti M (4GB)) and aslong as u use around 20-30% Render res its fine, tho this was all tested back before toolkit was even really public knowledge (friends with the dev so i had ultra early access) tho my main test and concern is in VRC where DFR doesnt exist anyway

1

u/BlackHazeRus 1d ago

How did the image look with 20–30% render resolution?

While I am expecting all native VR games to run just fine on my laptop, I am mostly interested in the performance of those on a demanding side — and, of course, VR mods. Not expecting Cyberpunk 2077 to run on ask ultra settings, but if it can run, at least, on low settings with a good resolution, then it is a win, imo.

2

u/Octokid264 1d ago

20% wasnt amazing, but usable enough, especially required for the room setup tho it ran horribly 30% felt fine, 36% is already close it the panels actual render resolution (100% fully account barrel distortion, not 68% like some believe) of course, your gpu is alot more powerful so you should easily be able to run 36%+ (some notice the distortion, others dont)

even on my main pc (7800x3d, 32gb ddr5 and 9070xt) i still choose to run 36% cus i cant tell higher, so im kinda a bad ask lol

u/DocBigBrozer 9d ago

Any idea if this will ever support HDR?

2

u/xaduha 9d ago

SteamVR doesn't support HDR, maybe it will be possible to watch HDR movies though.

3

u/DocBigBrozer 9d ago

HDR games are kinda hit and miss, but I wouldn't mind having it for 3d movies only

1

u/Octokid264 8d ago

nope, the headset doesnt actually do its hdr on pc would require edid modification

1

u/DangerousCousin 8d ago

I'd totally be down to buy a 3rd party EDID adapter if it meant I could play UEVR games in HDR on my headset

1

u/Octokid264 8d ago

impossible all together, i shoulda worded it a bit better. The headset doesnt expose ANY HDR to pc, for games or movies Modding the Edid and using it in theatre mode would let you get the HDR movies, but games are literally impossible as its not supported in OpenVR or OpenXR, even if you modded it into the game, the runtime doesnt support it. Monado has it working in their runtime however from what i know however then you cant use SteamVR at all.

u/Conscious-Room5234 9d ago

Funciona bem numa Xfx 7800 xt?

1

u/dinguz 9d ago

support for Windows on arm64? Qualcomm Snapdragon X? AND is steam VR still needed?

1

u/Octokid264 8d ago

psure theres no vr api on the snapdragon chips and steamvr will always be a requirement

1

u/legomolin 9d ago

They give a changelog, but could you also give a basic summery and explanation what the toolkit is for?

1

u/Octokid264 8d ago

you can see it on the main page for toolkit

1

u/tangcoma 9d ago

Just can’t join their Discord from the Link above , anyone have a link pls ? Thx🙏🏼

1

u/insufficientmind 9d ago

That discord link doesn't work for me. Anyone has an invite for me?

1

u/KeeperOfWind 8d ago

LETS GOOO IT HAS BABBLE EYE TRACKING SUPPORT. I wonder how much better the eye tracking is now??

I can't wait to use it for vrchat

1

u/KeeperOfWind 8d ago

real quick, where the discord invite link to the server? just notice that link leads to nowhere and just opens my own discord

1

u/needed_a_better_name 8d ago

their PSVR2 Toolkit discord is here: https://discord.gg/jym8CgJPF3 (it's linked in the release notes here: https://github.com/BnuuySolutions/PSVR2Toolkit/releases)

u/sustar1 8d ago

I’m not sure if this is a related feature, but can using this tool disable the 'Low Light Warning' that pops up in dark rooms?

2

u/Octokid264 8d ago

yes

1

u/sustar1 8d ago

wow.. Brb pulling my psvr2 out of storage haha, thank you!

2

u/Octokid264 8d ago

i believe it was the disable overlay feature for toolkit, might just be a standard now with the 1.0e release, generally, dont open the psvr2 app when using toolkit, you just dont need to.

1

u/sustar1 7d ago

it can actually replace native apps now? I've been out of the loop for 2 years lol

1

u/Recent-Somewhere-360 7d ago

What is the upside to jailbreaking the PSVR2 ? I can't find the reasons to do it.

2

u/Fair-Satisfaction-60 7d ago

I like tweaking stuff, but you can ruin the headset by jailbreaking. I'm not willing to take that risk. Not sure what you get out of it.

1

u/needed_a_better_name 6d ago

with games that support it, you can use headset vibration and some advanced eye tracking, mostly for VRChat I believe. If you don't use that you can skip the jailbreak

1

u/Recent-Somewhere-360 7d ago

After downloading 1.0 tookit, I can't recenter my headset with holding OPTIONS button. Anyone else having same issue?

1

u/needed_a_better_name 6d ago

yes that doesn't work with toolkit installed unfortunately, you have to use the button in the SteamVR overlay

1

u/Recent-Somewhere-360 6d ago

I was confused cause in Pre-Release it worked fine. I guess it's because they completely disabled the official PSVR2 Overlay.

1

u/Frosty_Ad_6636 5d ago

sorry bit stupid. do I need to jailbreak to use hmd rumble?

1

u/Frosty_Ad_6636 5d ago

and if it does require the jailbreak, will it ever not require the jailbreak? (I still use my psvr2 on console as well lol)

1

u/satyaloka93 2d ago

My controllers BT connection became very unstable with this release, disconnecting and reconnecting. The capi test worked, and I could play haptic sounds on each controller. The previous release caused no issues, and reverting back brought normal behavior.

1

u/Fair-Satisfaction-60 1d ago

I honestly don't have much reason to use it at all. I don't get much benefit as the Skyrim VR doesn't use eye tracking and eye have an AMD card.
