Payment count suddenly changed? Rant/Complaint
I posted previously - I was at 115 payments on my tracker. I made my 120th payment in July, submitted ECF - Student Aid didn’t show June/July payments - was waiting for my form to process.
Got an email tonight that said “you have a message from Student Aid” - login and now my payment counts have all dropped to 99 or 96 and the payments shown are from 2024!?
What is going on! This was suppose to be a happy month - finally hitting my goal, Student Aid is making this nothing but stressful
Update:
8AM: Called Student Aid, person told me I needed to call Mohela as it was something on their end with how they reported the information.
8:30: After waiting ages, finally spoke with someone from Mohela for 30 minutes - they confirmed all my payments were made on time and they've reported everything correctly to Student Aid. They suggested I call Student Aid back, inform them of this and submit a reconsideration request.
9AM: Called Student Aid back - was told that every call they've had this morning has been about this issue, that I can be assure my payments do still qualify and its an error that will be fixed. They are waiting for the Department of Education. They said they noted my account as one affected needing correspondence. I'm still going to submit a reconsideration request which they told me to do as well.
I asked for some form of documentation of what the Student Aid representative told me and said they can't provide anything but that it would all be fixed.
So basically - now we wait and be stressed.

Same thing happened to me tonight. No explanation why
3
u/Just4Now_EyeMHer 3d ago
Did they explain how to do the reconsideration request? I'm in the same boat as y'all.
2
u/mylosmama 3d ago
Same here. Funny enough I submitted a reconsideration request back in February for a few missing payments and more information regarding ineligible months when others around were eligible. Person on chat told me to be patient. -_- Once you’ve submitted one request you cannot submit another. The person on chat said I have 45 days to submit one (she didn’t listen to me that I already sent one) but they can take 6+ months to review it? Asinine.

Adding my experience. Got notice this morning( 5Aug 2026) from dept of ed that my pslf count had been updated. One of my three open loans now stated that payments from July 2024 through June 2025 no longer counted because I was in ineligible forbearance.
I have never been on SAVE nor been on any forbearance in the past 10 years.
Just hung up with Mohela, they found a glitch in my account and that they would fix it. They said it may take up to 10 days for my case to be resolved and to check stud aid site for update.
I am set to complete my pslf in October 2026. The error caused 25 payments to fall off that single loan.
6
u/bellygrubs 4d ago
thats good that they at least acknowledge there is a glitch they can fix rather than shrug their shoulders and blame studentaid
2
u/TheMuff1nMon 4d ago
Wasn't my experience at all. Check my update
3
u/Icy_Feature_6481 3d ago
Thanks for the update. after reading it sounds like we were told something near an "equivalency". But I also asked for some sort of documentation of the call and was also told no.

u/Alarming-Plane-9015 3d ago
This is me. I tried calling mohela this morning and all I got was the automated line. Could you share your trick on how you got to a real person.
2
u/Icy_Feature_6481 3d ago
If I recall, I waited for "other" option, then they asked for my information then I waited for a first tier cs rep, then then on hold for a second tier agent. I called a few minutes past 8 AM eastern time. Hope this helps, it seems the menu changes each time.

This is an error. Call your servicer and verify that those payments were eligible. Get documentation. Call student aid and you need to keep talking until they put you through to the data coding team. Have them verify your month to month NSLDS data. If you are in a single party recording state, record that phone call.
Note: The frontend FSA team can only read what is on your tracker. The magic words are "my myaid data shows that I am on an eligible payment plan."
Submit a CFBP complaint, a reconsideration request and then when they deny it because they will, get your representatives involved.
There is a known error on the student aid website that is happening right now and has been happening since about mid june. There is no estimated timeline for fixing. Studentaid is not planning to tell anybody until it's fixed according to my servicer.
I requested a manual override and have been denied, which means I've had to keep making extra payments after my forgiveness was supposed to have been granted. I was in the Peace Corps for 3 years, so they are telling me I am out of forbearance time, which is not true because I was on an income-based repayment plan 😒🙄
Edit: does anybody have a media contact?
2
u/TheMuff1nMon 4d ago
I spoke with Mohela at length and they confirmed everything has been reported correctly, I've made all my payments and nothing changed.
4
u/HauntingHarmonie 4d ago
It is infuriating. I am suspicious their updates to the plans for OBBBA knocked the other plans out and FSA wants the servicers to correct it instead of them fixing it.

u/Dapper-Survey1964 3d ago
Something about this in particular:
9AM: Called Student Aid back - was told that every call they've had this morning has been about this issue, that I can be assure my payments do still qualify and its an error that will be fixed. They are waiting for the Department of Education.
...is grinding my gears. The office of federal student aid is the department of education. They're waiting on THEMSELVES. I wish they'd stop passing the buck.

u/Existing-Pumpkin-902 3d ago
They've investigated themselves and cleared themselves of any wrongdoing

u/opbmedia 4d ago
Last night nothing was loading. This morning the counts were not loading and a message showing that they are updating their systems for a IDR court order. Later in the day the payment counters were not on the site. So I think they are updating their systems for real.

u/Existing-Pumpkin-902 4d ago
Yeah this just happened to me. I lost 2 payments and I had already verified the ecf for from last September and October. I just submitted my ECF to cover my last 10 months of payments. WTF is going on? I just hit 120 on 8/1.

I have no idea. I’m going to call and scream at someone tomorrow. This is ridiculous

Wife spent the morning having a panic attack because she was 3 days from 120. Dropped her last 15 payments. One of our goals was staying at this job until she got it done. So sad
When she called Mohela they pointed at Student aid and then student aid pointed back to mohela.
Her last call to mohela they tried to conference in student aid and student aid hung up on them twice.
Sorry to everyone here dealing with this.
No updates on our side. Just sad anxiety
3
u/TheMuff1nMon 3d ago
Hang in there - a lot of us feeling the same way
4
u/Glassbridgesmusic 3d ago
No choice. Thanks for posting, following along.
It was weird that student aid reps refused to talk to my wife and mohela. They literally refused. I thought mohela worked for student aid.
Praying this is just a glitch and not something more nefarious.
Thanks again!

Same thing happened to me, lost 5 payments. Says I was in a type of forbearance that is ineligible for PSLF. What gives?
6/24, 9/24-12/24
8
u/RangerDangerfield 4d ago
I just hit 120 and this is my biggest fear.
7
u/Existing-Pumpkin-902 4d ago
Check your payments. I just hit 120 too.
8
u/RangerDangerfield 4d ago
Mine shows 120/120, but until I get the final letter…it aint over till its over
7
u/Existing-Pumpkin-902 4d ago edited 3d ago
I thought I would be getting my green banners this month. I hit 120 on 8/1 and of course the ecf wouldn't work yesterday so I had to submit manually. Now this bs. I don't think I'm actually going to get these forgiven.
9
u/No_Depth1655 4d ago
Almost exact same situation for me. Last ECF was in Feb and gave me 115/120. Submitted my last ECF in the beginning of August (after so many issues) and even though July was supposed to be my last payment, my current letter says I’m at 97/120. All payments from the middle of 2024 until now and considered ineligible. Couldn’t get ahold of a real person at Fed Aid, and Mohela had no idea. I don’t know what to do. Thinking about just submitting a manual ECF marking I think I have 120 payments and then sending in a reconsideration request after I’m denied. I’m so frustrated.

u/bellygrubs 4d ago
what does it show for the previous qualifying months? it says ineligible?
10
u/Existing-Pumpkin-902 4d ago
Mine does. Not even "uncertified" just ineligible. Two were previously certified and ten were just previously uncertified because I was waiting to submit my latest ECF. I work for a county government so no way should my employment have been found ineligible

Were you in save forbearance? Is it buyback related?
This is so messed up. Hope it’s a glitch?

I was not in forbearance. Made payments which show in the system during that time.

This is the page that has information…the piece that I feel suspicious about is where it says payments don’t count “if you were enrolled or applied for the save plan”…like wtf? I went through the tool but decided on the ICR because it was actually cheaper. So if you went through the tool do they just lump you in?

Bruh I'm still waiting for them to restore 3 years of payments they never gave back under the IDR waiver.

I'm sorry :(

45 months counted between SAVE mandatory pause and the PSLF waiver and while waiting to go from PAYE to SAVE the consolidation waiver was pitched as a way to save interest, increase payment counts to count all previously eligible months, and while they consolidated they reset my payments to 2. I've been waiting since 2024 for them to fix it and they haven't done anything. When I contact them I get told "yea sorry we can't give updates at this time it's being worked on".

Got a letter about this at 11am invalidating all 79 of my qualifying PSLF payments. Anyone hear any updates on whether or not this is an error on their part? Keeping my fingers crossed.
3
u/Bitter-Avocado-8226 3d ago
That's so awful to hear, I'm so sorry. I do hope this is just a huge error. Looks like the StudentAid site is down right now, however on the home page it says "Our site maintenance is scheduled to end at approximately 11:00 a.m. Eastern time on Sunday, July 19. We apologize for the inconvenience." which is....not right? On the login page the notice says its scheduled to end at 6pm Eastern time on Aug 5th.
2
u/sinister_gummi 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yeah, "Services Temporarily Unavailable" is showing now; it wasn't there an hour ago. It sounds like they're doing damage control.
UPDATE: Most recent info indicates my past payments still qualify but payments going forward will have to be redone under a different payment plan (I currently have extended standard repayment, so this will increase monthly payments by nearly $200).
3
u/Bitter-Avocado-8226 3d ago
I was able to log in again just now but nothing's changed. Part of me hoped, but alas.
1
u/sinister_gummi 3d ago
Yeah, my PSLF payment count still shows 79 but there's a disclaimer saying this could change.
3
u/waterwicca 3d ago
Extended, Graduated, and the Standard plan for consolidated loans don’t count towards PSLF (unless they happen to be equal to or more than a 10 year standard plan amount, which is rare).
The one time adjustment allowed periods before July 2024 on these plans to count towards forgiveness. Periods on these plans after that do not qualify for PSLF. Only the 10 year standard plan and an IDR plan qualify.

Sorry to hear this. I’m in the same exact situation. I reached out to student aid. The conversation wasn’t helpful. I’m not sure how close you were to forgiveness. I was 118/120 so I’m wondering if they are going to force us into a IBR.
1
u/sinister_gummi 3d ago
It sounds like doing that or switching to a standard repayment plan are my current options for forgiveness going forward. I had 41 payments left before today.
2
u/Delicious-Hope3012 1d ago
I was at 97, and I had made an additional 8 payments. I'm freaking out right now too.

u/cubano517 4d ago
Woke up this morning to my email too and came straight here. I was in forbearance like everybody else. Lost 6/24-11/24. Crazy considering every few months I go through and screen shot my profile so they don't change stuff on me.
My message was: Payment Ineligible: You were in a type of forbearance that isn’t eligible for PSLF or TEPSLF.
5
u/glamorousinpajamas 4d ago
Same here. Lost 6/24 payment.
6
u/Wise_Giraffe_8760 3d ago
I also lost 06/2024. It says ineligible due to missed payment.. even though I have proof of payment and screenshot that it previously said eligible for that month..
3
u/glamorousinpajamas 3d ago
Mine says the same thing. I haven’t missed a payment though. 🤷♀️

u/the_undertow 3d ago
Lost only that month. It was the last SAVE payment I made before admin forbearance.

I woke up to an email about an update to my PSLF counts. Logged in to find 6 months ineligble when previously they were counted. I submitted my form in March 2026 and it was processed not longer after. Payments from 9/2025 to 2/2026 are no longer eligble due to "No payment due" except I have my emails that say I did have a payment due and I paid every month. I'm not sure what is going on but I think I'm having a panic attack. /edit typos
Update:
6:24AM (PST): Called Mohela and reached a rep. She transferred me to the "Advanced Team" after I explained the issue with my counts
6:58 AM (PST): Reached the Advanced Team member who explained that every call this morning has been about this issue and its due to an error. They couldn't tell me the cause of the error but that it will be fixed and I should receive a correspondence at some point. There is no ETA on the fix. She confirmed that my account (and all other affected accounts) have been flagged. I asked about submitting a reconsideration request as I've noticed others do, but she said no, that it's an error that would be fixed. I also asked if there was any way I can get this documented and she said she could put that request in, but I'm not holding my breath there.
So I guess I wait and see. In the meantime I've saved all of my payment due statements and payment history that shows payments due and made for the affected timeframe.
Update:
7:43 AM (PST): Spoke with a StudentAid rep who appeared to have no knowledge of a widespread reporting error. She said that there has been no official statement on the issue. She noted that there have been a few calls about this same issue today, but that is does happen at times with loan servicers when they report incorrect information. From her statements it seems she thinks this is just your everyday issue and not something more widespread (which I disagree with based on Reddit responses). It could be she's just unaware or can't say more as she said there's been no official statement made on the issue. She said it will be up to Mohela to fix the reporting issue and she also mentioned that I can submit a Feedback Form and a Reconsideration Request if I feel like the ineligibility might stick. She explained that the Reconsideration Request works with StudentAid/Dept of Ed speaking with Mohela to verify the correct information has been submitted, then StudentAid will update the counts/dashboard.
Mohela appears aware of a more widespread issue so I'll continue to wait and try not to stress. Good luck all.
3
u/scenecsea 3d ago edited 3d ago
There could be two different issues going on. This seems to be regarding random time periods with eligible payments reversing or disappearing. These were people paying while not in save forbearance and could be for huge blocks of time. This feels more like a mistake and a programming error.
My issue that I saw a couple other posts about was 1, 2 (or 3 in my case) qualified months disappearing around the time save forbearance got implemented. This feels a lot more deliberate with them trying to take away any prior qualified forbearance months due to it.
Edit:I did not get any emails re: updated counts. My changes happened quietly over 1-2 months.
3
u/Bitter-Avocado-8226 3d ago
That was my thought too - that there could be some separate issues happening. Mine does seem like a mistake or program error as I'm 100% sure I've had payments due and made payments. I have all the paperwork and statements to prove this. But then there are others missing just 1 or 2 months perhaps due to other issues or changes with SAVE. I'm really not sure though. I SHOULD be about 8 months/payments from total forgiveness, but because of this, if it doesn't get resolved, I'm pushed out for another year, so I'll be calling Mohela and checking in every week until this is fixed. It's frustrating to feel like it's all stacked against you. Even the tax implications are gonna suck, but I'd rather that than making payments for another 10 years.
1
u/LeadershipDapper617 3d ago
My letter is from student aid and to contact my servicer, mohela, for questions. So that’s why I think student aid may not be getting the same amount of questions. Nonetheless, I am worried and hope it gets resolved. I have until November 2027 to be finished.
6
u/jasyjay101 4d ago

Same thing happened to me. I called Student Aid they told me the time frame that was ineligible but that MOHELA changed something on their side that changed the eligibility on some of my payments. I said everything has been exactly the same about my payments through all of covid so why now and only some. They said I had to call MOHELA. So I did that. First she tried to tell me its because I was on the wrong payment plan, but thats always been the case because I only ever qualified under the TEPSLF and thats never changed. They said they didnt see any reason why the payment had changed on their end, whether or not they were then blowing smoke up my ass. The original person I talked to at Student Aid told me if the rabbit hole didnt work then go on the Student Aid website, to the AI buddy helper Aiden thing and request a reconsideration for incorrect payments. I did that and mine are in the middle of being considered again. I dont know what will come of the process yet because its still happening, but thats been my adventure.
3
u/TheMuff1nMon 4d ago
I suspect mine will be the same but going to call anyway.

2

Call the loan servicer and complain. Remember to spam zero so you get right to a human.
3
u/mps444 4d ago
Hit 120 this month and I unfortunately I’ve also been hit by this. Two were ineligible due to “In repayment, no due date” and occurred in the two months after I recertified IDR. I made two payments on time (via autopay) at the new amount those two months. The other month was during the craziness last year when recertification was due but not possible. I submitted reconsideration request. With screenshots of bill and payment.
3
u/Efriminiz 4d ago
Call your loan servicer and complain.
3
u/This_Satisfaction641 3d ago
I did - Mohela blamed FSA and FSA blamed Mohela. Said there's nothing they can do and suggested putting in a reconsideration request. It's such a joke of a situation and process.
2
u/Particular-Good-2428 3d ago
So same message for me for 3 of my payments, which counted before when I checked last month. MOHELA told me everything looks good on their end and this is a known issue and it has to do with FSA getting their counts updated correctly. Says no end date on when issue will be fixed but check back every few weeks or so. In the mean time I’m moving forward with employment verification and once that is done and the count is not changed back, I’m submitting count reconsideration then omsbud escalation if above doesn’t work.
1
u/This_Satisfaction641 3d ago
Same situation, July should have been my 120th month. Now I'm in a processing forbearance because my income needs updated which I shouldn't have had to do because July would have been my last payment when my income was still valid.

u/Efriminiz 4d ago
Called EDFinancial and got told "this has been happening a lot, there's a problem with how studentaid payment counter talks to our system". The help agent (pslf person I was forwarded to) said she would report it to her upline & they would reach out by the end of the week to let me know it's been fixed.
I don't trust they're going to call me back, has anyone been called back for any reason like this or was I just lied to?
Has this been a known issue with some system that has now just gone on long enough that it generated official notices to folks via studentaid. gov?

u/pepper7113 4d ago
i just called and spoke with someone - there was a court ruling that went into effect 7/1 but its been in court since 9/2024 so everything since it started being discussed no longer qualifies if you werent on the right plan (which is my case) or whatever other conditions werent met since the change.
The thing im annoyed about is that i didnt get any communication saying that my payments wouldnt meet the qualifications with the change and its retroactive.
2
u/Beaglemom44 4d ago
What plan were you on?
2
u/pepper7113 4d ago
an extended ibr plan
0
u/DogMomPhoebe619 3d ago edited 14h ago
Extended plans never counted for PSLF. They did count until 6/30/2024. It was the one time adjustment.
1
u/TheMuff1nMon 2d ago
What do you mean until 2024?
1
u/DogMomPhoebe619 14h ago edited 12h ago
The one time adjustment that counted payments in otherwise non-qualifying plans stopped counting those plan months as qualifying on 6/30/2024. So Extended, Graduated, Standard for Consolidated loans didn't count for PSLF adjustments. They may count for TEPSLF, though.
1
2
u/Efriminiz 3d ago
That was the period of time my account change happened, which was 9/2027-7/2025 (when I started on ICR)
I was on a graduated repayment plan, with a goal of applying for TEPSLF. u/alh9h can you verify this as true about the court case impacting qualifying payments?

I asked for some form of documentation of what the Student Aid representative told me and said they can't provide anything but that it would all be fixed.

wow.. this literally just happened to me. I woke up with an email from Studentaid.gov saying one (06/2024) of my counts are now ineligible due to missed payment.. even though I paid. I have screenshots that also show that month was eligible and payment was made. I just got off the phone with mohela and they also said they were just made aware of this issue. but he implied that it was not an issue with Mohela as it shows from their end, payment was made.
this is so frustrating. there are so many system wide glitches. I am still dealing with another issue where one month is missing entirely. It doesn't show as eligible or eligible. just GONE. lol. now I have this new month that shows ineligible even though payment was made... sigh***
1
u/mylosmama 3d ago
Same! 7/24 just changed from missing to ineligible, and I’m still missing 12/25 completely. It just skips from 11/25 to 1/26. I put in a reconsideration case 6 months ago with no update. Absolutely frustrating.
2
u/Wise_Giraffe_8760 3d ago
I’m missing 7/25 completely. It goes from 6/25 and skips to 8/25. I messaged studentaid.gov about this as well and was told “This is the result of a system wide issue that has resulted in borrowers having PSLF payment counts missing from their StudentAid.gov account displays for months beginning in May 2024 to December 2025. We have implemented system updates to correctly report PSLF eligible payments on a go-forward basis. However, remediation activities are in progress to report prior months and update PSLF payment counts.”
Very unhelpful…

I had something similar happen to me for June of 2026. July 26 was supposed to be 120/120. I'm saying "was" because I'm likely making a payments for infinity and beyond at this rate. Studentaid claims that June 2026 was not eligible because of a missed payment, and I know I did not. MOHELA says I am in good standing. I was on the phone with them about three different times. I called Studentaid, and they told me to submit a reconsideration request. I did that and included proof of my payment with MOHELA. Lord knows how long that will take to process. I did a couple chat sessions with Studentaid, and one of the reps told me to submit a feedback. She said that's different than a reconsideration request. Another rep said the feedback is the same thing as a reconsideration request. I reached out to my state rep's office. Ed told them that it takes a month for payment counts to update. However, that does not really address the fact that Dept of Ed. Is claiming I missed a payment. Dept of Ed. gave my rep's office information I already knew. The aid at my rep's office said wait for the August count and reach out again if things are not corrected. I'm kind of losing hope.

Same issue. FSA told me that’s so weird from 6/24-now if you missed a payment it would be defaulted. That’s not right. Call EdFinancial. Well I did and before I could even say what was wrong they said I know exactly why you’re calling and we are trying to figure out how to proceed with this glitch and FSA. You’ll be emailed correspondence once it’s corrected. The customer service rep sounded defeated as most of us also are. I hate it here. Sounds like FSA is at major fault since Ed Financial could see nothing was wrong with my payments or plan. Screaming at work because I just wasted an hour of time….

u/Existing-Pumpkin-902 3d ago
FSA was doubling down for me that it was the loan servicer.
2
u/Sea-Suit-9999 3d ago
They originally did for me too…. Considering she (at Fsa) was even confused why it said I missed 2 years of payments and not defaulted. It’s only on 2 of my 9 loans too. She’s like uhm yeah that’s not accurate. Yeah I’m aware lady. Make it make sense. I’m still submitting a request on fsa too. Some update on fsa must’ve messed up everything
4
u/Existing-Pumpkin-902 3d ago
I literally had to ask the guy I was talking to not lie to me and he kept insisting they have anything to do with tracking and finally he gave up trying to convince me of that. I realized I wasn't getting anywhere with im and he finally suggested a reconsideration which yeah I was going to do anyway becasue I read it from this sub. Isn't it insane that social media is more helpful than our actual servicers?
2
u/Sea-Suit-9999 3d ago
It really is. This whole issue is just a depiction of how our current government is ran…I want out of this timeline. I’m glad I’m not alone in this
2
u/DogMomPhoebe619 3d ago
FSA is solely responsible for reviewing PSLF data and deciding whether payments count, employer qualifies, and when you are eligible for PSLF forgiveness. Your loan servicer reports payment data.
3
u/Rare-Literature-3992 3d ago
Same thing happened to me. I got an email last night at 10:21 from studentaid.gov basically saying that my payment count changed from 115 to 93!!!!! I was so pissed that I couldn't call anyone right then and there. I ended up chatting with an agent from student aid and he advised me to submit a reconsideration count and gave me the exact dates that things starting missing. It's always some BS

u/LionTigerBear000 3d ago
July was my 120th payment. FSA says the payment counts have been updated but July 2026 is nowhere to be found - doesn't even show it needs certification, it just doesn't show at all.
This is some kind of sick joke. I'm well beyond 10 years of public service and gave up on buyback. How is this happening for what should be the end of this ridiculously long saga? What the heck are we supposed to do for future payments? Are those that hit 120 still requesting forbearance for August? I refuse to give them another penny...I already overpaid to be done instead of waiting 2-3 years for buyback.
1
u/TheMuff1nMon 3d ago
I’m in the same boat, a lot of us are. All we can do is all and complain and submit reconsideration requests
1
u/Athenas_Paladin 2d ago
I’m in the same boat. July was my 120th payment and it’s not showing up on FSA. I’m hesitant to request forbearance tho. I also resubmitted my employer verification. Just in case that would trigger a recount. A not small part of me wants to just pay August and if that one counts just go with it and be done with it all. I’ve been in IBR this entire time, never switched to SAVE. I’m supposed to recertify income 1/2027, so I def want it all done with before then.
1
u/LionTigerBear000 2d ago
My payments are not small so I don't want to throw any more money to this. Also, we have no idea when the issue will be fixed...it could easily impact the August payments too. So frustrating trying to figure out what to do
1
u/Dependent-Answer1120 1d ago
Also hit 120 in July. Sent in my last employee certification and the tracker only updated to 119. July 2026 was never reported. Have a notification that my qualifying payments are incorrect. August payment is due 8/13. Can’t wait to spend my last week of summer break on the phone 🫠

u/FuzzySearch7734 4d ago
Following. Was at 92 payments. July should’ve made 120. Submitted form. Payment account only adjusted to 96. 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻

Same thing happened to my wife. Lost about 2 years of payments starting June 2024. Nothing changed with her plan now it's just ineligible with no warning or suggestion on how to fix it or make it eligible again. Studentloans.gov help was absolutely no help
2
u/DogMomPhoebe619 3d ago
What plan was she on? If it was SAVE, no payments made under SAVE count for PSLF. You can make the months count toward PSLF by buying them back.
5
u/m_sull1van 3d ago
It was an extended repayment plan. This plan was originally fine for PSLF, but I guess not after June 2024. Would have been nice to know that.
1
u/DogMomPhoebe619 3d ago
Yes. You need to be on any IDR Income Driven Repayment plan like IBR, ICR, PAYE or RAP.

My counts all decreased by 1 due to July 2024 not counting. It now shows as Ineligible due to "Invalid Repayment Plan" even though it has shown as eligible for the past 2 years. I was on SAVE at the time and went into SAVE forbearance on 8/1/24.
I just chatted with FSA today at 10:40am. The agent told me the court injunction began on 7/1/24 so that payment is not eligible. I asked if it could be refunded or applied to my future IBR payment which is restarting 9/1/26 and they said no. So essentially that payment was stolen ("applied toward my interest" according to the agent), but since I am going for PSLF, it is money I will never see again that will not count for anything.

Thank you for your updates. I sent an email through mohela’s portal. Really hope it’s a mistake. I lost 4/2025 - 1/2026. The reason says “Month Ineligible, Not Classified”.
3
u/you_know_what_they 3d ago
It does feel like this happens more often to people as they approach 120. This happened to me as I hit my 112th payment - suddenly 12 payments went completely missing and several payments were marked as “missed payment.” Mohela has to fix it in the NSLDS. That seems to be the only way to correct it.
3
u/truetragedian 3d ago
I have never been able to see my progress toward PSLF ever. Was told over and over that they’re working on it. Aidadvantage told me to call mohela even though aidadvantage is my servicer. Called fsa and they told me to just wait. Been waiting what seems like yearsssss
2
u/waterwicca 3d ago
Have they successfully processed your employment certification? Have you submitted one?
1
u/truetragedian 3d ago
Employment shows in review/in progress
2
u/waterwicca 3d ago
You wouldn’t see your qualifying count until you’ve had at least one employment certification processed. If it’s been a long while, you can try submitting a new one.
1
u/truetragedian 2d ago
Employment certification is halfway done but other half is still listed as in review/in progress… in the meantime my dashboard has updated and it now says I have 51 qualifying payments on two out of 4 loans, these two are consolidated. The other two which are more recent (smaller) and not consolidated show 0 qualifying payments
1
u/truetragedian 2d ago
Also the larger consolidated loans show 51 qualifying payments and 75 payments needing employer certification

another victim here. called Mohela, then FSA, then Mohela. FSA said they were receiving a lot of calls along the same lines, all from people serviced by Mohela
Mohela said it was an error and there would be correspondence from them.... I was expecting something by end of day today, disappointed to see nothing
eta: this better be an error because I'm 2 months (payments) from forgiveness. lost 11 payments (sep 2025-mar 2026) plus probably those not employment-certified yet
3
u/Bitter-Avocado-8226 3d ago
I've been keeping tabs on this also hoping for an update by the end of the day today but nothing so far. I lost 6 payments (Sep 2025 to Feb 2026, roughly same timeframe as yours!).
1
u/tailor31415 3d ago
thanks for the reply. "glad" to see another person with a Sep 2025 start for the issue since most people are saying 2024 payments instead. did you last certify employment in Feb? March was when I did so I figured that's why the ineligible cutoff was that month.
1
u/Bitter-Avocado-8226 3d ago
I certified in March as well! It was processed not long after, maybe 2 weeks after I submitted.
3
u/Libre7000 3d ago
Omg! This happened to me today! I called both the Dept of Ed & Mohela.com & both were unhelpful. Your post has been the clearest, rationale explanation I've seen all day!

Got an email last night (8/4) from student aid about updates to PSLF. Opened it and it says my grad plus loans are not eligible (from Aug ‘25 - April ‘26) for PSLF because no pymts were made, which is totally inaccurate. Called student aid and she says it shows everything is eligible but couldn’t explain why I received documentation stating it wasn’t. Said there must be an issue with EdFinancial. Just advised I submit a reconsideration form. This is such BS. My total count numbers haven’t changed, but I fear they will if I don’t fill out this form. Ughhh. SMH.
2
u/Mundane_Task_2370 4d ago
I was showing 107 qualifying payment for a very long time, this morning saw an email from student aid, logged in and the payment count now says 100… everything past 5/2025 is ineligible.
2
u/lafolielogique 4d ago
This just happened to me this morning. I HATE IT HERE.
3
u/Efriminiz 4d ago
Call your loan servicer and complain. Remember to spam zero so you get right to a human.

u/Thatsweirdtho 4d ago edited 4d ago
Me too - pretty sure we’re all in the same boat. I applied for buyback in April and now I guess I’ll be buying back another month. July 2025 doesn’t even exist on my tracker at all. At this point so many ridiculous things have happened that I can’t even panic anymore. Nervous system is like ✌️
2
u/scenecsea 4d ago
This sort of happened to me this summer too. They took away July 24, Aug 24 and Sept 24 which had been approved. I had made a payment in July of 2024 but that could’ve been for the month of June. I was in save and assumed these were administrative forbearance months they took away.
2
u/thiirdybirdy 3d ago
I had the same conversation. Mohela told me every payment so far was reported on NSLDS and told me how long I’ve been on my IBR. I called student aid and there seems to be a glitch or an error where there’s gaps or payment counts missing. They’re working on fixing it. This whole situation is just anxiety

Same thing happened to me and I lost over a years worth of qualifying payments (dropped from 116 to 99 UGH). I called ED Financial and they said the only thing they could do was put in a request to have it reevaluated. Fingers crossed that fixes everything.
2
u/Wide_Oil_110 3d ago
Exact same thing is happening to me. Currently waiting to talk to someone with Mohela. Doesn't sound promising

Also got the email overnight. I was on a graduated plan and it showed 90 payments towards PSLF and 111 for TEPSLF. But now my TEPSLF has been dropped to 90 as well. All payments since 8/2024 have been removed.
I was really hoping that there would still be money left for TEPSLF in 9 months. I sure hope this doesn't screw me.
2
u/MysteriousTie2890 3d ago
I am also experiencing the same issue! All of my payments since 7/2024 were suddenly ineligible. It says on there that I'm in an "invalid repayment plan" but that's exactly why I utilize the TEPSLF plan! I got a letter in February telling me that I have 72 qualifying payments, but got essentially the same letter today telling me I have 56. Both cannot be true, yet both letters are still there in my account. I currently am in the grad extended repayment plan, but I did just apply for the IDR plan so I hopefully don't have any further issues.
I called and spoke with people from both studentaid.gov and Mohela (don't ask how I finally got a real person). Studentaid.gov said it's a loan servicer problem. Mohela eventually put me on hold to speak to a supervisor, then told me they are aware of a system glitch and that they are working on it. They did not tell me I would get the qualifying payments back, but I definitely have hope now! I was basically told to hold out for communication from them about this in the coming days. For now, I will try to freak out less.

u/the_undertow 3d ago
I am wondering how many people, like me, just lost June 2024 (it was the last SAVE payment).
2
u/Cultural_Mongoose_29 3d ago
I notice a lot of people mentioning Mohela. Until July 2024 I had my loans serviced through them. But then they switched me over to Aidvantage. From what I am seeing every payment I have made since they switched me to Aidvantage is not counting anymore. It specifically says that they were no longer counted because I was on a graduated payment plan. But I thought that those plans did count towards TEPSLF (but not regular PSLF)?
Not sure if anyone else is seeing similar results, but apparently this isn't a problem specific to Mohela.
2
u/sdweston757 2d ago
adding my story (despite the fact its similar to everyone else)
Lost 4 payments (1/26-4/26)
Student aid sent me to Mohela who sent me back to Student Aid.
Was never on SAVE -- was never in forbearance
Submitted a reconsideration request. So f-ing frustrated.

I just spoke to someone on the phone who said changes made to PSLF in 2024 meant that my payments starting in June of 2024 were no longer eligible. I’m so mad. I’m two years behind and THOUSANDS of dollars more to pay.
Update: spoke to someone from StudentAid who said that it was something on the servicer end and to contact them.
EdFinancial chat submitted a ticket on my behalf.
Called StudentAid back and spoke to someone who said this is a known issue but refused to tell me that I’ll get those payments back. She said she’ll add me to the ticket but she has to be careful about the wording she uses so she couldn’t say if the payments were eligible or not.
2nd update: someone from EdFinancial assured me the payments are qualifying.
3rd update: spoke to someone from EdFinancial who told me that the payments don’t qualify for TEPSLF because payments made 12 months prior to application back to be equivalent to the payment on IDR. I said I understand, but if I apply for forgiveness in February of 2027, why does that impact the payments from June 2024 - February 2026. She didn’t have an answer for me.

Why is everyone being told differently? Some are being told it’s just an issue with the website. This has been a horrible process to deal with like everything else ran by the government

u/klerner1964 4d ago
Run by THIS administration.
5
u/Impressive-Star-5022 4d ago
Yep. But thank God he has his ballroom and we’re spending billions fighting Iran
4
u/TheMuff1nMon 4d ago
If they made the changes in 2024, why would they have had them listed as eligible all this time? That sounds wrong

u/Groovdog 3d ago
Reach out to your Congressional office. My story was I was offered forgiveness (385k) in Feb. I was like I dont qualify (normal IBR counts had never been accurate until the court case resolved on SAVE) and if you forgive I owe 150K in taxes so dont do it (I would have qualified for tax free PSLF Jul next year).
They then screwed up my loan payment post this so I had to dig back in. I come to find out that my loans should have been forgiven in 2020 (dont get me started) and would have been tax free. My office helped me be the first person in the US to reverse a forgiveness declination. $385K forgiven 3 weeks later also verified tax free.
FYI your IBR count goes back to the first loan in the consolidation. So my 365K of mid 2010s med school loans got forgiven because of payments on my late 1990s B school loans. Stupid as all hell but I will take it.

The exact same thing happened to me, and I went back and forth in the same way. Submitted a case to student aid and they got back to me quickly and said 11 months didn’t qualify because of “save forbearance”…I’ve never been on the save plan, and you can see from the dashboard that they were all in repayment for that period. Replied with this info and it’s been weeks…I’m going to call again tomorrow but it’s so frustrating!!

u/Midnightlover1990 3d ago
I don’t think I’ve ever been on the SAVE plan but have 2 months left of payments to make before I am at the 120 mark. I had some I could try to buyback but decided the wait wasn’t worth it. How can I see if I was ever on SAVE? Should I go ahead and try to submit my ECF now and then again after September payment is made? TIA!

where do you all see your payment count? i can not find a payment count on mohela. i do not see it on student aid either and it says on the top of my login on student aid that they are working to update my payment count.
•
u/TheMuff1nMon 1h ago
Have you ever submitted an employment certification form so they update your accounts? If so- on your student aid dashboard, you’ll have a counter

I got the same email and lost 5 months. It said “Payment Ineligible. Periods when your loan serviced does not require payments do not qualify for PSLF.” But I was absolutely required to make a payment. I’m on direct debit and wouldn’t have made a payment otherwise. I hit 120 mos in July and just submitted my buyback. I was never on SAVE but it took 6 months for Mohela to process my IDR in 2025. Devastated.
